Descender Ride Report-Oceanside Loop-30 June

Hi Guys,

We had a good group ride on Sat.  The group was not too large, about 11 riders.  We had a number of guys who were not able to attend the Monster Climb VI trip, so some legs were fresh!  The planned easy cruise to Oceanside Harbor blew up quickly as guys did not stay together along the 56 bike path.  Rumor has it that we did not all correctly stop at the Del Sur stop light as a full group.  The pace along the curvy sections of the bike path was way too fast given the environment of busy tight paths with lots of walkers and other riders but we made it to PCH unscathed.  We all finally regrouped at 15th Street in Del Mar and continued north.  We lost riders along the way who had family obligations.  By the time we passed Encinitas we were down to a handful of guys–Bob R, Chad, Matt, Cresap, Guido, Jeff S and me.  The pace was fast the furious all the way into Oceanside Harbor.  Chad and Cresap led out Bob and Matt as they blazed to the turnaround.  New speed records were set on Strava, the bar has been raised.  I watched from the back and regrouped at the bathroom stop by the harbor.  We lost Cresap as he did not stop.  After a short break in the sunshine we pedaled off and met up with Matt’s twin–Chris Baab.  The group pedaled south at an even faster pace.  I blew up totally before we got to La Costa.  Guido and Jeff S were waiting for me at the I-5 overpass.  We caught up with the guys before turning onto Olivahein.  I was hurting and told Matt–go ahead and do not wait for me up Camino Del Norte.  I cruised back through Rancho Sante Fe and over the river toward Fairbanks Ranch thinking the guys would be way ahead.  I spotted them waiting at the corner before the Three Witches Climb.  I needed water so went to the store.  Guido was generous enough to hang back with me as the group sped up the climb.  Guido and I pootled back to the 56 bike path and home.  The ride was about 65 miles for most, fairly flat but still a leg buster for me.

Attached are a few photos.

Action Item:  Who is riding the Scripps Old Pro 50 mile event on Wed, July 4th?  Bob R said he is riding.  Cresap says they can not do the event if he does not ride.  The ride starts at 7:00 on the corner of Scripps Ranch Blvd and Hilbert Street.  I plan to drive over to Cresap’s house by 6:30 and pedal to the start.

Hope to see some Descenders on the ride-

Rob
