Descenders Ride Report for Sat, 4 Aug

Hi Guys,

We had another good ride on Saturday, heading up to Oceanside Harbor.  It was its usual fast and furious ride.  We started on the 56 bike path with Guido making a cameo appearance.  He had already ridden over an hour and had family responsibilities ahead.  I think he just wanted to get in the picture.  We picked up Frankie somewhere along the bike path and then Jeff S and Eileen met us in Del Mar.  Frankie brought along one of his riding buddies, Noel; another good rider.

The cruise up PCH was fun and the group stayed together, over a dozen riders.  We lost Sheehan at La Costa as he had to head back inland, still a long ride home via Del Dios and around Lake Hodges.  A few miles south of Carlsbad Pete Wood and Dave Voris motored off the front.  Rick allowed Claus, Geoff and me to get on his train for the acceleration to close the gap to their wheels.  We were smokin’ heading into Carlsbad Village, saved by a red light so I could catch my breath.  Noel, Frankie and Yi-Shiou closed back to the group with Jeff S, Eileen and Bill coming fast.  I tried to sneak away just before the Oceanside Harbor turn around but the group quickly accelerated to blow by me with Jeff S, Voris and Geoff leading the way.  Voris kicked in a higher gear and hit the loop first setting a PR in Strava for the segment as well.

We met up with Denise and Amy at the turn and stopped for water before heading back south.  The traffic in Oceanside was already starting to build.  Eileen had to take evasive action and good riding form to avoid a car that suddenly stopped in front of her.  Geoff and I moved through the cars and foot traffic back south.  We picked up the pace and somehow got away from the group.  Geoff is super strong and pulled us the whole way back down PCH.  We made the turn on La Costa and made our way towards RSF.  No group in sight.  I lost contact with Geoff on the climb up to Lago Lindo but he patiently waited for me at the top.  We cruised Stud Loop and rode toward the Three Witches.  The group caught us at the light at the bottom of the climb having skipped Stud Loop.  Geoff was not done yet, he led the group up Three Witches but flatted near the top.

I grabbed Claus at the regroup spot to show him how to ride back to Poway.  The group rode through lower Santaluz while I just limped back south on Camino del Sur.  The ride for me was 66 miles and the legs felt the effects of another great Descenders ride.  Attached are a few photos.
