Hi All,
We had a good group ride in perfect conditions yesterday in North County. The Lake Wohlford loop is one of the club favorites. We had 14 riders meet at the mall to start the ride. We got a welcome cameo visit from Dave Boyle who never seems to lose his riding form. The Ranchos rolled at the same time so we all rode up Bear Valley, about 35 in total. The Descenders turned up Mary Lane, where Geoff B pulled ahead quickly. Geoff was going to have to leave early so he was pushing hard. The group rode along Citrus and on towards the climb of Wohlford. Bob R had already tackled one KOM on his way over to the start of the ride. He attacked on Wohlford, trying to gain another. Matt B rode over 12 mph to the top of the climb, jumping into the top 25 riders on Strava but still well short of the Rick B Kom. We regrouped just as the Ranchos rolled onward. At Woods Valley, Bob R was again looking for speed. We started our fast pace line with the Ranchos just ahead. Voris, Guido, Geoff, Matt and I got onto the back of the Ranchos group as we sped towards the end of Woods Valley. Fast and furious for a few miles. We regrouped and let the Ranchos head on up Lilac. Bob R and Geoff had to head home while the remaining 12 riders rode towards Couser Canyon. We all climbed up Couser and regrouped at the top. Bernie went on the descent first and alone to roll by the spot of his crash. After a fast, fun and curvy descent we headed over to Rice Canyon after crossing route 76. The long climb up Rice was not too steep and the tree covered sections were beautiful. We had blue skies, no wind and it was not too warm, great riding weather. At the top of Rice Canyon we all rode over the the church for a short break and water refilling. The ride down Old 395 was uneventful if not its usual a bit boring. We stopped at the camp ground store for more fluids. Jeff S, Eileen and I headed out early to get some distance on what we knew would be a fast approaching rest of the gang. We made it to the top for a brief rest in the shade as the rest of the guys came to regroup again. The return was down Jesmond Dene and we all flew fast; Rick got out the yellow bus to bring Eileen and Jeff back to the group. We spun back through Escondido and down Citrus to Bear Valley. The final few miles were quick back to the start at the mall. The group rode about 66 miles and a bit over 5,200 feet of climbing. Some of the guys approached 80 miles with their rides back home. Good day to be on a bike and out with the Descenders. A few photos are attached below.
