Monster Climbs Trip Report

Monster Climbs Trip-22-25 June 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: Bill Wood, Tony, John M, Bob P, Sheehan, Ernst, Voris, Geoff, Hodges, Denise & Rick B, Oleg, Neil, Larry, Bernie, Len, Claus, Paul P and Rob

The annual Monster Climbs trip was a bit more complicated this year. This was the Descenders 11th annual cycling trip designed to tackle some of the toughest climbs we can find, a real fun riding club weekend. Most of the previous trips were based on the eastern slopes of the Sierras. This year we set off for the first time to Nor Cal to ride the beautiful roads near Los Gatos. Fortunately we have two Descenders living in the local area, Dave Voris and Geoff Barrall. These two guys did the lion share of the work to get us prepared for the MC trip. Dave and Geoff scouted lots of the local roads and designed the three days of riding. They mapped out each ride, giving us turn by turn details and the strava file for our bike GPS. Geoff led the search for hotels and then appropriate dinner locations. Dave took up the reins to draft all the details into our famous brochure. This was going to be an epic adventure.

We needed some San Diego rider support for the trip. Claus and I took up the logistics work of renting a U-haul trailer and driving up to Los Gatos with the bikes and spare gear. There were 19 riders that participated in the road trip to the Nor Cal adventure. Len took Bernie up early in his car, they rode near Santa Barbara and Monterrey on their way to Los Gatos. The rest of the guys dropped off their bikes and gear a few days before their flights to San Jose. On Wednesday, Claus and I got the trailer early in the morning, zip-tied each bike securely into the trailer and packed around the bikes all the other gear. We loaded up Claus’s SUV with the coolers and lots of food for our road trip north. Man can that guy eat, I gained a few pounds on the drive north just because there are so much food available. We made great time and got to the Los Gatos Lodge by 6:30 pm. We had time for a relaxing stroll around downtown Los Gatos and a late dinner before hitting the sack.

Thursday morning was spent relaxing and then exploring some of the local roads to loosen up the legs. We rode north to the Saratoga Gap and climbed up 7 miles to Skyline Blvd, before continuing north. At the Palo Alto sign we turned around to retrace our ride. A nice 31 mile loop with about 3,400 feet of climbing; some great roads, trees and views, definitely a preamble to the weekend ahead. It was pretty hot still but the weather forecast predicted a nice cooling trend ahead. We hit the pool and relaxed before the first of the guys started to show. The hotel gave us the room assignments so we were able to unload the bikes and gear from the trailer to each hotel room. The gang finally all arrived and we walked to downtown for dinner at local restaurants, we were on our own for the first night. After dinner we all got back to the pool area where Voris and Geoff went over final details from the brochure to make sure everyone was ready to ride the next morning.

After an underwhelming breakfast provided by the hotel, we all met near the front of the property to begin our first day of riding. Geoff led us through Los Gatos to a flat gravel trail with one climb that got us to Lexington Reservoir Dam before we spun around the south side of the reservoir and started climbing Old Santa Cruz Highway. Lots of thick forest surrounded this road as we climbed to Summit Road then headed south towards Soquel-San Jose Road. We are almost on top of a ridge line as we cruised together. At the turn, Claus rolled over an object that destroyed his tire. He had to walk back to a general store about half a mile and hitch a ride back to the hotel to get his spare bike. Claus rejoined the group back at the store later. We all flew down Soquel-San Jose about 5 miles before the road stopped due to a recent wash out from the winter rains, light traffic made the descent even better. We started back up the climb and spread out along the way. Tony hit a pothole and fell in the back of the group, a number of folks stopped to help bandage Tony up. Most of us did not know Tony fell and the really fast guys were already on their way to climb Mt Bache Road to Loma Prieta Peak. It was warming rapidly, the climb was tough and the road surface not good. I rode with Bob P and Paul P. We saw Rick B blow by us, he had kept a very conservative pace in the early part of the ride; this was his one push for the day.

The fast guys came back towards us while we were still climbing. We finally got to the top, great views all around. Now for the dangerous descent and stop at the store. Everyone regrouped at the nice patio in front of the general store. Much needed water and food were consumed. Claus rode up on his other bike, ready to keep riding. Eventually everyone headed back north on Summit Road and descended back down Old Santa Cruz Highway toward the reservoir. Geoff served up some more pain with a 5+ mile climb up Soda Springs Road. It was now very hot and the 8% average grade sapped out the last bit of energy. Some guys skipped this climb or only rode up part way. I rode slowly and kept an eye out for possible water stops, I was about empty. I finally got close to the top when the fast guys came back towards me. At the top I rested a minute before Len pulled up too. We descended together for the first 1.5 miles, I turned into a driveway and found a hose to get some needed water. Paul P was also descending when I got back on the road. The descent was fast. We found Sheehan climbing up, he was going to make it to the top, hogwash. We also found Tony making his way up, tough guy. Paul and I got back to the reservoir and swept up Bill W who was on his way back to the hotel. We all survived Day 1 of the MC trip–only 60 miles but almost 7,900 feet of climbing. The pool never felt so good, a few beers took off the edge and we all still managed to rendezvous at Grill 57 for dinner. The restaurant was just across the street and the family style food was delicious; they provided plenty of dishes for us to consume. Dave Ernst was late to the trip but he made dinner and was planning to ride the Mt Hamilton climb set for Saturday. After dinner we met back at the pool to go over the planned ride and hand out car assignments for the drive to San Jose. It was time for bed!

Day 2 brought forth the aches and pains of Day 1, another lousy breakfast at the hotel and Mt Hamilton. We drove over in assigned vehicles, based on how long we planned to ride, to Penitencia Creek Park, a community park in San Jose. Voris led the group to Alum Rock Park before we got to the start of the 18 mile climb up Mt Hamilton. The climb is up and down, so really three long climbs to get to the observatory. We spread out on the road, it got warmer. You could see the observatory on top from a long distance away as you switched back through the trees to reach the final pitch. It was a hard climb. Geoff and Voris had discovered a nice table and "park" setting behind the main building on their recon ride. We regrouped there, caught our breath and drank lots of water. The big studs left to ride the east side of the mountain where the temperatures were even hotter. The brochure gave great details on where to turn around and how far down the main descent would be to the turn. A number of riders declined to look over the east side edge. My car mates were all planning to ride the full route. Paul P had to leave early on Sunday so this was his last day to ride; same story for Ernst. I finally worked up the courage to head down. I only made it 2.5 miles and could see the curvy roads winding farther down. It was hot now and I knew every second I sped down was a lot more time to get back to the top. The descent back had two climbs, so that weighed on my mind as well. I stopped, took a few more photos and made the decision that it was time to go back. The short climb back to the top was tough. I assumed the guys that were not planning to go to the east side were out ahead of me, I start the descent back down the west side. Just as I hit the first corner, I saw Bill Wood on his final turn to the observatory. I waved and kept rolling. The smooth roads were magical to descend, traffic was light and I quickly went down the first 7 miles. The climb was short and painful with more fun descending. This was repeated a few times until I got back to Alum Rock Park where I decided to spin an extra loop. I finally made it back to the parking lot where the cars were. I rode only 55 miles and 6,500 feet of elevation. John M and I were the first to arrive. The groups of riders came back over the next hour, some made it all the way to the bottom of the east side–over 60 miles and 8,000 of climbing, others were happy to have made it to the top. We left as the cars filled up to get food and drive back to the Los Gatos Lodge.

The pool was inviting and Oleg brought out a few of his beers. For some reason we do not drink lots of beer after our MC rides…..think we are all too exhausted. Everyone recovered enough to stroll back into downtown for a group dinner at Gardino’s Ristorante Italiano. Geoff had picked a great restaurant. Unfortunately, they "lost" our reservation and did not know we were coming. Geoff used his magic and the restaurant moved tables around so our large group could fit. They came through big time with lots of great family style eats, from calamari to pastas to great meats. We made sure Claus did see not our plates with food still available, we all got to eat plenty. The stroll back to the hotel helped settled the awesome dinner to make room for the ice cream social. We all relaxed in the pool area and enjoyed the treats organized by Bernie and Dave Ernst, thanks guys.

The activity level picked up quite a bit on Sunday morning. Everyone had to pack up and check out before the ride. Bags were left in the bike trailer and we all spun out for the Day 3 ride. Geoff and Voris had us back in the redwood trees for the ride. We cruised around the Lexington Reservoir again and climbed Old Santa Cruz Highway before splitting off on Mt Charlie Road. Voris planned to lead the "long" ride group while Geoff marshaled the shorter route group. The long group had the expected suspects–Larry, Neil, Bernie, Oleg, Claus and Voris. Somehow Bob P, Len and I managed to stay with this group as we rode into Felton. Voris explained that the rest stop location was the store on the corner. Len was wise enough to head for the store and wait for the other group. Bob P and I called an audible and we changed our initial riding plans; we stayed with the Voris group. We had to persuade Bob to come. He and I were beginning to regret our decision while climbing Jamison Creek; it was a tough climb. We actually asked Voris if we should turned around and just go back to meet up with the shorter group. Voris helped keep our determination strong.

We finally made it to the top and cruised over towards Felton Empire. This 3-4 mile descent made all the pains of the earlier climbs worth it. We all flew down a smooth, curvy road that splits a redwood forest. The trees were so thick that is was actually pretty dark; scary, spooky, cool. It was awesome! We regrouped at the New Leaf Community Market, all organic food inside! The other group had come and gone about 20 minutes ahead of us. We relaxed on the patio tables and caught our breath before the last climb of the day. Geoff warned us that Zayante would be a tough climb. It was warm when Neil and I got out from the store first. He spun ahead and I tried to give him turn instructions from the top. He was way out front, made a few wrong turns but still got home to the hotel safely. The rest of the guys caught me and we rode up together. Bob P fell back a bit so I told everyone to head back, I would wait for Bob. I waited and waited. Bob finally came around the last corner slowly pedaling his square wheels; at the top he got off his bike and onto his back. After a few minutes rest, Bob and I headed back along Summit. Voris did not want to leave anyone behind so he and the rest of the guys had been waiting for us a mile or so up the road. We were now all back together, except Neil who was finding a new route to the hotel. We rode back to the hotel, tired yet exhilarated from the ride. It was 65 miles and almost 8,000 feet of climbing, a fitting end to a great cycling weekend.

Some of the guys were already gone, on their way to the airport. Claus and I changed into our swim suits and set about lashing all the bikes & equipment back into the U-haul trailer. It was hot, sweaty work. We closed the trailer and jumped in the pool before a quick change into driving clothes. We got on the road by 3:30 pm. Traffic was fairly light and we made it through Los Angeles ok. It was a long trip but we still made it home before midnight. We both crashed into bed. I got up early to unload the bikes from the trailer. Claus came over and we returned the trailer to U-Haul….mission complete.

A couple of folks commented on the trip. Denise said, "This being my first Monster Climbs trip and hearing about it for a decade, it was all that I expected and more. Everyone was so inviting and encouraging and really brought out the team camaraderie each day. The climbs did earn the "Monster" name for me, and the family style dinners were a highlight after a long hard day on the bike. The club is truly a group of friends and I am glad to be part of it."

Hodges also noted that he thought the Mt Hamilton climb was epic and he wants to do it again. He thought the Soda Springs climb was brutal, misses the epic nature of the Sierras and believes that Claus was the "man of the trip", great riding Claus. Mike also enjoyed the Italian food and thought it was great that we all came from so far to see Dave V and Geoff! Below is a photo Mike took by Lexington Reservoir. The link is to the photos I took on the trip. Look forward to MC XII in 2018.

Alpine Beatdown Ride Report

Alpine Beatdown Ride Report-22 July 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: Bob P, Farkas, Len, Bernie and Rob

We expected warm weather on the Alpine ride. I met Bob at the corner of Black Mountain Road and the 56 bike path, we pedaled together over to the 7-11 store to meet the rest of the gang. Alpine in July, how many riders would show? Len came just before 8 am; I proposed we consider a different route if no one else showed. We were surprised to see Mike Farkas roll up, he hates Highway 67; too much fast traffic. Mike had a MTB race on Sunday, this was just a planned SPP spin. Bernie rolled up and we were even more surprised since he was supposed to be riding Nine Mile Meadow and Sherman Pass. He explained that a fire in the area delayed the race until another date. Looks like we had a small crew ready to tackle Alpine.

Mike led us up SPP, I fell off the pace. My legs were heavy after my hiking in the Sequoia National Park, so I just spun to the top. Bob was already sweating heavily and said he was not feeling well. Farkas spun back down SPP, Bob went over and then down Poway Grade and we were left with just 3 riders–me, Bernie and Len. We went down 67 and experienced why Farkas hates the road so much. The road crews have cut in the side bumps all along the descent and in some cases, cut off any shoulder we had to ride in, now it was even more dangerous to ride the road. We made it safely to the bottom and rode over to Lakeside. There was no Neil to join us, so the three of us rode to Olde Highway 80. I proposed skipping Dehesa but adding Quail Canyon loop. Len said he wanted to get in the miles up Dehesa and Bernie was open to anything. Bernie and Len dusted me on the way past Flinn Springs Park, they waited for me at the I-8 underpass. It was getting warmer and the humidity was high. My legs were not feeling the fun.

As we came to Harbison Canyon, I explained that I was skipping Dehesa and riding up South Grade Road and over to the regular store stop for water. I assured them they would catch me on 67 after I added the Quail Canyon loop. Bernie and Len rode away while I pootled up South Grade. I made it over to the CVS store for some much needed water and a coke. I finally got motivated to head back, turned onto Hawley Road and climbed up to Broad Oaks. These large houses with great views are on the ridge above El Monte, the road we ride to El Capitan Reservoir. I spun west to hit Quail Canyon and looped around the east side of Lake Jennings, then back to our usual route that hits the dreaded climb back up highway 67.

It was not very hot and I slowly spun up the road. After a quick stop to take a photo of San Vicente Reservoir, I made my way toward the corner of SPP. Bernie came up from behind and we rode together to the light. Len closed the gap and made the light too. We descended together down SPP, my plan was to stop at the Subway for more water. Bernie was buying coffee at the store on Community. He and Len turned to Stowe Road while I spun to Subway. After a nice, long water break I rode to the bottom of Black Mountain Road and climbed to the 56 bike path, making it home with about 68 miles of riding and 5,900 feet of climbing. Bernie got home with about 71 miles. It was a hot one but lots of fun, really. Below are a few photos.

Lake Wohlford & Couser Canyon Ride Report

Lake Wohlford & Couser Canyon Ride Report-15 July 2017

by Bernie Bogard

The group met up at North County Fair including Len, John M, Bob P, big Rick, Eric and Bernie. Rob was said to be on the DL related to a rib injury sustained in some peculiar manner; he abandoned on the ride with Bob trying to get to the start. Bob P pushed up Mary Lane, then on the way to Wohlford we saw some Ranchos repairing a bike then Dave Ernst materialized from nowhere to join for a bit, depart to reacquaint with Cole Grade, then again join us at Gopher Canyon/395 before heading home to San Marcos. Dave was aggressive on the climb up Wohlford to the regroup. Eric paced the group from the break at the lake, then by Woods Valley. Rick took over doing an amazing pull basically all the way to Valley Center road. Much attrition as John M was MIA never to be seen, Bob P turned back from Wohlford, Eric wasn’t feeling it by the end of Woods Valley. Len, Rick and I trundled through Valley Center to Couser, enjoyed the descent then 76/neighborhood to Old 395 climb. Ran into Ranchos ,including Jordan Babb, at the store on 395, then finished off on the rest of 395 with some merciful cloud cover, through the stoplights of Escondido to Center City Parkway and North County Fair where Len and I said goodbye to Rick who rode home to Poway. 55ish miles/3800 ft climbing. No photos so you will just have to trust us that the ride actually happened; also check out all our Strava cups!

Five Faces of Soledad Ride Report-8 July 2017

by Bernie Bogard

Riders: Hodges, Jeff Callahan, Bob P, Bernie, Len, Neil and Rob

Caught up to the group at El Camino Real finding Bob P, Rob V, Hodges and Jeff, a triathlete out to try a group Descenders ride. Soon after, Rob had shifter problems and after pushing himself up the inside Torrey climb he headed off to Trek for repairs. Bob P pushed 400+ watts at times up the same climb. We met Len and Neil as well as Tony (Guido’s son in law to be, he didn’t join the group) at the Torrey Pines bananas. Off to Soledad via La Jolla Shores for the usual climbs with Neil leading the way on each, surprise surprise. Bob P and Jeff headed back east after the first climb, Hodges claimed he needed to go to the airport on his bike, wearing his lycra, saying something about getting through the TSA to meet his daughter. Down to a mere three, Len led us up the third climb, then Neil pushed it on Pacifica and I meekly offered to forego the Valverde climb but Len and Neil would not hear of it so off we went. A bit humid but a fun day on the bike. Below link shows a few photos from early in the ride.

Coastal Cruise and Coronado Ride Reports

Oceanside Coastal Cruise-1 July 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: Rick W, Jim, Paul P, Bryan Jones, Tony, Justin, Bernie, Cresap, Hodges, Bob P, Oleg and Rob

The usual fast pace was expected for the Oceanside Coastal Cruise. We had some riders we had not seen out for a bit so started with a good sized group on the bike path. We cruised together to the coast. The splits started as we headed north through Del Mar. We regrouped in Solana Beach, only to get a major split as the group spun towards Encinitas.

Bob P was in the lead group but got spit out the back and made the turn left after Swami’s; the rest of the group had gone straight. I was back a bit and found the lead group waiting. We all stated out again but never found Bob P. Oleg did a u-turn near Carlsbad. We lost Bryan, Justin and Paul in Carlsbad when they turned back. Cresap retreated back down the coast as well. The group was reduced in size. We did pick up a strong rider, Lane. He cut some major air out front and helped pull the group along.

As we cruised into Oceanside, I took off to see if I could gap ahead. Rick W and Jim easily pulled me back at we rode by the pier. Traffic was heavy, pedestrian traffic tied up space and I hit the accelerator. I got over the bridge and spun through traffic to push towards the turnaround. I caught the guys off guard and easily made it to the circle before cruising to the bathroom for a water break. Small victory, fast trip to Oceanside.

Tony, Bernie, Jim and Rick W headed inland along the bike path; on their way to Sleeping Indian. Hodges and I rode with Lane back through Carlsbad. We picked up some Sub 5 riders and kept up a good pace until Hodges and I turned inland at La Costa. It was warming and I tried to stay with Hodges up the climb to Lago Lindo, failed. He waited for me at the top. I stopped for water in RSF and pushed to catch back up to Mike. We cruised up Three Witches and then back to the bike path. I limped home after 64 miles and only 2,600 feet of elevation. I was still feeling the Palomar ride from the previous day, 64 miles and 6,600 feet of climbing.

The real studs finished Sleeping Indian and rode over 85 miles. Great riding boys. The link shows some photos from the group ride.

Coronado-4th of July Ride-4 July 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: Tony, Oleg, John M, Len, Hodges, Rob, Justin (Garet’s friend), Neil and his brother, John; along with Oleg’s buddies-John, the PhD from UCSD, Nick, the IP lawyer, Kirk, the geriatric healthcare entrepreneur and Matt, the F-18 Marine pilot.

We all met at Oleg’s house on Ariane and spun south towards Balboa Park. Oleg led us through lots of hills and back streets to get down toward Chula Vista. We kept going farther south, climbed a nice steep road called Monument Hill and got to the US border. We saw the border fence and Tijuana just across a little valley; a border patrol truck was just off to the left.

We experienced multiple flats, Kirk had two and his tire was bad, so near Imperial Beach he abandoned and grabbed an Uber home. The rest of us pedaled along to the bike path towards Coronado. Oleg led the group into Coronado on the main road while Hodges and I stayed on the busy path all the way to Hotel Del. After a quick regroup, we headed for the ferry boat to take us back to downtown. We lost more of Oleg’s friends who were visiting family and friends on Coronado.

The remainder of the group pedaled from the Convention Center to Little Italy. Neil and his brother, John, had to get home so only Oleg, Len, John, Hodges, Justin and Rob stopped for coffee and a snack. We relaxed on the patio and finally got motivated to ride the rest of the way back to Oleg’s. The final hill up hurt lots but Oleg had beer ready for our thirsty bodies. It was a fun 60 mile ride. RSF, Del Dios & HVR Ride Report

RSF, Del Dios & HVR Ride Report-17 June 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: Rick W, Bill W, John M, Guido, Larry, Peter P, Bernie, Hodges, Claus, Neil, Eric R, Sheehan, Bob P and Rob

Last weekend to train for the Monster Climbs trip. We had a good group out for our Saturday sufferfest, most met up at the Blk Mtn corner to start. We picked up Eric R and Sheehan at CDS, then Bob P met us closer to his Santaluz house. The weather was nice and warming quickly. We stayed as a group down Three Witches and over toward Stud Loop. Rick W picked up the pace since he was bailing early. He said his good-byes at the start of the loop.

Eric R hit out fast on Stud Loop, I followed his wheel. We were quickly swallowed up by Larry, Neil and Bernie. Everyone regrouped before riding Del Dios. The group spread out along the climb. We spotted Tony and Patrick O. flying down Del Dios doing a local ride. Most riders turned onto Lake Drive with some staying on S6 to connect over to Via Rancho Parkway. We all cruised to the gas station by the mall for a water break.

Things split wildly from there. Hodges got in his dirt fix by riding Mule Hill to HVR. The rest rode over the Lake Hodges pedestrian bridge. We saw Monica Taylor just finishing her MTB ride and gave her a hardy greeting. After the lake, John M and Peter P headed back toward PQ on W. Bernardo Dr. We rode over the freeway and turned onto HVR. Guido continued going straight along Pomerado and back to PQ.

We still had 10 riders climbing HVR. The group spread out on the climb with Larry and Neil setting the pace. We regrouped at Archie Moore. Bill W and Sheehan were still climbing when most of the guys headed out on a "civil" pace to the top of HVR. Sheehan and Bill W descended back down HVR to get home after they finished the climb. Eric, Bob P and I took Archie Moore Road to get back to highway 67. We cruised along 67, descended Poway Grade and took Twin Peaks back toward 4S.

I split from them at Bernardo Center Drive and climbed up behind Black Mountain to get back home. Short loop, only 56 miles, nice pace for me, about 17 mph, with some good climbing. Looks like the group is ready to tackle the routes Geoff and Dave Voris have planned for us this upcoming week. The link below shows some photos of the ride.

DeLuz Loop Ride Report

DeLuz Loop Ride Report-27 May 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: Marisa & Andrey, Rick & Denise, Jason, John M, Hodges, Tony, Bill Wood and Rob

I drove over to Spring Meadow to pick up Mike Hodges before heading north on I-15. We spotted a Descenders kit near the driving range by Jesmond Dene Road on our way to Gopher Canyon; it was Bill Wood. He had landed from Australia the day before and was riding to meet us. All the riders met at the small parking area off the freeway; Bill soon rolled up to join us. We had one new guest riding with us, Jason. He is cut from a similar cloth as Garet, Jim W, Todd, Oleg and Andrew–our 40ish year-old strong rider contingent with a young family. Jason is a local boy, a graduate of RB high school and also lives in RB. He is a strong rider and will soon join the club, coming to as many rides as his family responsibilities allow. Some of you other young bucks need to come out and push the pace with him. He was out front or near the front all day.

We rode north and started the Circle R climb. This DeLuz route is another of the brainchild’s created by Tony. He, Guido and I first scouted out this loop last fall, we have ridden it once on a group ride and most recently on a Skive Ride. It was still new terrain to some of the riders on Saturday. We regrouped at the turn to West Lilac and spun along, past the Daisy Deli and started up Couser Canyon. Denise, who has been riding very well, led us up the climb. We sped down the fun descent and regrouped at highway 76. After a quick turn we hit Rice Canyon. Hodges had pootled up Couser so he could now pace me and Jason up Rice. We kept up a brisk pace and regrouped just past the top. Quickly behind us were Rick and Denise, the rest soon followed.

Lots of new roads ahead for some. We rode north and dropped into Temecula where we got our first water stop at the gas station. Tony led us on some side roads to get to the west side of I-15 via the Santiago Road bridge. This is where Bill Wood turned off as he was heading to meet his wife for brunch, nice call. The rest of us rode to Rancho California Road. Denise pulled me and the group for the first mile. I went finally around and climbed, with Jason just behind me, up the final switchbacks and over across the top. We descended down to DeLuz Road to regroup. The next 10+miles were the quiet roads of DeLuz, through the vineyard areas and orchards. Lots of descending and a few biting ascents. The roads were covered with wide oaks, sometimes creating a nice tunnel of road, some beautiful scenery. The views were spectacular and everyone raved about the cool route. After a sharp descent we did the final 1.5 mile climb up into Bonsall. Hodges went to the liquor store and bought a huge 2-liter bottle of coke, we all shared it and regrouped before heading down Mission Road.

Tony led us onto Olive Hill Road, which looped around and then descended down toward highway 76, more fun roads to ride. We needed another water break at the gas station on the corner. The group split from here, with Tony, Hodges, Jason and Rob heading to the West Lilac Road climb and the rest of the group going straight to Camino Del Rey and back to the start. We climbed up to the bridge and sped along back to retracing our ride down Circle R. Tony and Hodges split, staying on Lilac towards Valley Center while Jason and I rode back to the cars. The early group was gone, they had ridden about 65 miles. We got in 70 miles and 6,400 feet of climbing. Tony got home with about 85 miles and Hodges pulled a Century, nice riding boys. Below is a link to some photos from the ride.

Oceanside & Sleeping Indian Ride Report

Oceanside & Sleeping Indian Ride Report-20 May 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: Hodges, Guido, Tony, Andrew, Rick W, Andrey, Marisa, Larry, Bernie and Rob

As I made my way up the bike path to meet the group, I had my first John M sighting of the day; he was heading westbound on the path. As we passed, he said he was getting a head start; at least a 10 minute head start based on when we usually roll. The group met at the corner and headed for the coast. The pace was under control until we hit PCH, then the accelerations began. The group was split at various times but mostly regrouped at the lights. Guido was saving his knee and turned at La Costa. Andrew looked strong during some of the accelerations but he was building up his base mileage gradually; he turned at La Costa too.

Andrey pushed to catch the wheel on a number of occasions of the fast flying lead group; many were spit out the back and fell a bit behind as we made our way towards Carlsbad. Rick W, Larry and Bernie pushed hard after the light by the water treatment plant; I managed to hide in the back. They pulled me into the crowded roads of downtown Carlsbad; lots of cars and walkers. The four of us made a light before the Army-Navy School and cruised into Oceanside. Rick pulled away at the beach and I was left to get him. He pulled me past the pier before I lost his wheel. I managed to get back to him near the bike path as there was a beach soccer tournament so car traffic was heavy; it was just the two of us on our way to the harbor finish. Rick led out, we dodged a few cars. One almost turned to street park right into Rick. I made my move to the left and went around the car while Rick had to stop. I pushed hard on the last two turns, I was going to make it to the turnaround first! I quickly tired and then felt a presence from behind, Rick must be catching me….that was when Larry blew my me. He had to close a huge gap to catch us, impressive. I slowed so much that Rick W finally did pass me just before the end of the harbor road.

We all regrouped at the bathroom to decide who was riding back down the coast and who was heading inland. Hodges had to go get his packet for BWR, he convinced Andrey and Marisa to join him. Rick and Larry headed back down the coast while Tony, Bernie and I headed for Sleeping Indian. Bernie pulled us on the San Luis Rey Trail and River Road to start the climb. As we started up Sleeping Indian, I had my second John M sighting. He was coming down, waved, blew by us and kept going. Bernie climbed strong while Tony and I swept. It was quite a bit warmer inland and we stopped for water after the Morro Hill descent. We cruised along Little Gopher Canyon to make our way up Twin Oaks Valley; that was a tough biting riser. We regrouped multiple times with Bernie patiently waiting for us. He pulled us south toward Cal State San Marcos and along Barnum Road to Escondido.

Tony split for home while Bernie and I headed down Centre city Parkway to the mall, then over the Lake Hodges freeway bridge. Bernie headed to Pomerado while I pootled along Bernardo Center and then behind Black Mountain to home. I finally got there with 86 miles of riding and about 3,700 feet of climbing; pales in comparison to the 100 mile ride Bernie completed or the 130+ mile rides the BWR guys did the next day–way to go Hodges and Claus. I know Quoc did part of the ride while Ernest did the Wafer ride; all great efforts.

Tour of California, Mt Baldy Ride Report

Tour of California, Mt Baldy Ride Report-18 May 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: Oleg, Hodges, Bill & Peggy Braamse, Neil B (Rancho rider), Bernie, Todd, Len and Rob

The Tour of California was again tackling Mt Baldy. I did a quick check of the previous years ToC rides we have done based on my photo library. Descender group rides have previously gone to Mt Baldy to watch the pro race in 2011, 2012 and 2015. 2017 marks the fourth time we have climbed Baldy to watch the pros. We have also watched this race from other vantage points–Mt Palomar, Mountain High, Dawson Saddle and a start in San Diego. This was the Queen stage of the week long race and expected to be another great adventure ride for the Descenders. We met early at the North County Mall and loaded up in three cars to drive to Glendora. Traffic was heavy and with a quick stop for a bite to eat, we did not make it to the George Manooshin Park until after 8:30 am. It was a bright, sunny and cool day at the start.

We pedaled along East Sierra Madre Ave for less than a mile before we hit the start of the climb up Glendora Mountain Road. The group eventually strung out on the climb with Oleg, Bernie, Todd and Rob riding to the first stop at Glendora Ridge Road, 10 miles up the mountain. Neil rode ahead of us but looped back. We descended down GMR; Oleg, Bernie and Neil went all the way to the bottom while Todd and I turned around after a beautiful smooth, curvy descent of 3 miles. We climbed back up with Hodges and Bill joining us as they turned around from their shorter descent. Back at the corner of GRR, we started the 12 mile climb to our lunch viewing spot. GRR is an awesome climb as well, not nearly as steep as GMR. There were lots of other riders on the road, it was a beautiful day for a bike ride.

The regroup spot was close to one of the KOM signs, just up from Baldy Village. There were a few concessions providing food and drink. The crowds were thick, bikes up against the side of the road. We went down from the KOM signage about 100 yards to get a viewing spot above Mt Baldy Road. The pro race started down in Ontario at noon with a pretty direct climb up through San Antonio Heights. Eventually the breakaway group of riders could be seen climbing up the road, they made the turn onto GRR and climbed towards us. Two racers were flying to capture points at the KOM with a group of about a dozen leaders leading the race. The rest of the peloton rode by, along with all the support cars and motos. After the race headed down GRR, we all tried to get the legs going again for the brutal climb to the ski lift finish.
It is not that long of a climb, only about 4 miles from the village, but it is a very challenging road with lots of elevation gain, steep gradient and lots of switchbacks. The crowd of riders made their way toward the top. There were lots of folks parked along the sides of the road, a good deal of partying was underway. I suffered mightily on my slow slog to the top. It was sunny and nice at the top. We parked our bikes about 100 yards from the race finish and walked along to visit the many booths on the finishing stretch. The huge television screen was broadcasting the race so we got to watch the last 25 kilometers of racing up the same roads we had just climbed earlier in the day, very cool. Our viewing spot was overlooking the final three switchbacks of the race. We watched from the big screen the attacks at the start of the final 2 mile climb, it was down to four riders in the last kilometer: Andrew Talansky, Rafal Majka, George Bennett and Ian Boswell. It was still anyones race.

Talansky had a better line and position on Majka on the final turn right in front of us; he won the stage by a bike length over Majka, followed by eventual GC winner, George Bennett in third place for the stage. Great race and finish. The podium action commenced almost immediately while other riders finally made it to the finish. Riders grabbed a drink and/or jacket for the steep descent back down to the team buses in the Baldy Village. Len and I had kept our bikes on the far side of the finish ramp so we had to wait for all the riders to finish before we could get back to our bikes. Other Descenders had taken their bikes to our viewing spot so they worked their way back down when the roads opened. Bernie and Todd waited for me and Len.

The four of us cruised down the steep sections and climbed back up to the KOM spot where we had our lunch break hours before. It was a sharp rise, making the speed of their riding up it earlier even more impressive. The 22 mile ride back along GRR and GMR was awesome, it was mostly down and provided great views as we flew down the curvy roads. Bernie did the lion share of the work on point. I dropped a water bottle when I hit a hole, Bernie waited to help pull me back to the group. I hit the front for a bit on some of the last sections of descent but it was too fast for me. Todd and Bernie flew by me while I backed off the pace; some of the tight radius turns were a bit much for this wimp. My Garmin also died with about 5 miles of descending to go so I lost another incentive to push the pace; I cruised to the bottom. Bernie was waiting for us at the corner. Len was still a bit behind so Bernie waited while I pedaled back to the park. I had the car keys for my guys who were waiting.

We loaded up, had a cold drink from the cooler and said our good-byes; every car was on its own to drive back to San Diego. Our car stopped for a much needed food break at the In-Out Burger in Corona and got back to the mall about 8:15 pm, long day but well worth it. Our ride was just over 60 miles with almost 9K of climbing. The guys who went all the way down to the San Gabriel River got in 5 more miles and an other 1K of climbing. The link below has photos of the ride and racing.

Lake Wohlford & Couser Canyon Ride Report

Lake Wohlford & Couser Canyon Ride Report-13 May 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: Bernie, Rick B, Jim W, Rick W, Neil, Eric R, Dave Sheehan and Rob

What is wrong with the first picture? You are looking at only "A" team riders at the start; A team plus me. I was in big trouble. I pedaled over to the mall from PQ. Hodges told me he was coming so I was hopeful that someone would ride my pace; he did not show. Sheehan was not at the start, I got some temporary good news later in the ride. As I rode up to the group, Larry Murray was also there, resplendent in his new Ranchos kit. Larry said he was over saying hi to his "homies"….then he went back to start the Ranchos ride. I know the Ranchos ride hard, kind of surprised Larry did not think about riding with the Descenders on this Saturday, the A team looked pretty good.

We rolled out a few minutes after the Ranchos left, I was still hoping Hodges would show. I started burning matches on the climb up Mary Lane. I held onto Eric’s wheel as best I could while the rest of the guys went well away from us. The pace over to the start of Wohlford was civil, but still work for me. We hit the start of the climb and I was quickly dropped. I kept Eric in my sights and caught up to him at the 2-mile mark. We all regrouped at Lake Wohlford, where my good news awaited. Sheehan had some early mechanical issues so he got dropped off and rode up in front of us. I now had someone I could ride with, or so I thought. Lake Wohlford looked good, lots of water and it was still very green.

Rick W hammered out from the lake, everyone was strung out on the way to Woods Valley. Sheehan was up near the front; I struggled to hold on at all. We did a quick regroup at the turn and then hit it hard. I somehow was on point when Sheehan said let’s go. I pulled for a bit and then quickly retreated to the back. The pace was furious,32-33 mph along Woods Valley. I thought about getting my camera out to capture the beauty of the 7-man paceline in front of me, but I would have lost pace before getting the photo. Near the end of Woods Valley, Sheehan stuck his nose out and then Eric & Rick B hammered for the corner. I was pretty far back so not sure who got their first, looked like a tie to me. We spun along into Valley Center and then to Lilac, past Daisy Deli and to the start of Couser. I was riding now with Sheehan at a much more civil pace. We climbed Couser, chatting about various family updates; at the top Dave said he was turning around to get to Old Castle Road. I was bummed since I was losing Sheehan and now had to push to get back with the A team riders. I flew down Couser, but not too fast; very scary for me. The guys were patiently waiting for me on the corner of highway 76 at the end of Couser.

Bernie led Eric and me along highway 76, the other guys were a bit slow to restart the ride and were just behind. I cut through the neighborhood ahead of the guys as they waited for some traffic to clear before turning. I thought about staging for a good group photo up the Old 395 Highway climb so pedaled fast to get ahead. I saw no one behind me so just kept up my pace. I looked back about halfway up the climb and saw a few riders well back, at least they were finally coming. I could see the final curve ahead. I was almost to West Lilac Road at the top when Neil and Rick B caught me, at least I made them work for it. Jim W caught up as we hit the overpass bridge. They were flying towards the planned campground rest stop. At one point, Rick, Jim and Neil all were giving their best "Chris Froome" impersonation, lying on the top tube, head at the handlebars. Another great opportunity for a photo, but I was working to stay just behind them. We got the RV Park and had a nice water break.

I knew I was the weakest of the riders so I rode out early while the guys enjoyed a bit longer of a break. The section from the campground, past the Lawrence Welk Resort to the corner of Mountain Meadow is always tough for me; long, straight and slightly uphill most of the time. I left early enough to barely hold off Neil and Rick B. They were breathing hard when they got to the corner. We regrouped and spun straight to downtown Escondido at a fast pace. The accelerations on Centre City Parkway were brutal. Eric was trying to tell me the story about his son’s upcoming prom date, it was too fast to even chat. The pace did not slow until we got back towards the mall. Bernie turned to ride over the freeway. It looked like he finally caught up to Sheehan on Pomerado when I saw the Strava fly-bys. Dave was ahead of us by 5 minutes or so the entire way down Old 395, we were at our water break when he came out of Old Castle Road. I pedaled back to where the cars were parked and bid adieu. Rick W & Jim rode out and I followed toward the pedestrian bridge. Lake Hodges looked even more full and very green. Rick turned left after the bridge while Jim and I rode toward PQ. I planned to stop at the gas station at RB Road, I was tired and needed to slow down; Jim was continuing to push the pace. He climbed up RB Road while I decided to head over West Bernardo Road. We both rode behind Black Mountain to home. I got in 77 miles and 5,400 feet of climbing. It was a great training ride for Monster Climbs, less than 5 weeks left to get in shape. Below is a link for the photos I was able to take during the ride.

Five Faces of Soledad Ride Report

Five Faces of Soledad Ride Report–6 May 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: Claus, Tony, Guido, Andrew, Hodges, John M, Jim W, Oleg, Len, Ernst and Rob

The start of the group ride coincided with the 5 km fun run for the PQ Festival. As I rode up the bike path toward the Black Mountain Road corner, hundreds of runners came down the hill towards me. I slowly made my way through the throng and got to the top. We started with a group photo under the banner. There were still some late-starting runners in front of us as we rode west. We picked up Oleg and Jim W on the bike path and continued on a steady pace towards the coast. It was a cloudy, cool day with rain in the forecast. We made it to Torrey Pines, I took an #obligatorrey photo of the group and caught Oleg taking his own #obligatorrey picture. The group climbed outside TP and regrouped at the top.

After a banana break, we pedaled along heading for La Jolla. Andrew, who was still on the recovery train, bailed to head down Genesee Ave back toward home. We spun past UCSD and down by the Scripps Oceanography Pier to La Jolla Shores. Guido bailed at Calle Del Oro and headed back to PQ. The fun of Soledad was still ahead. We did the usual Oleg routes up Hillside Drive to the top where we met Ernst and Len, the group was getting bigger. Sy was there and he took the group photo at the memorial cross. After a fast descent down Nautilus Street, we climbed back up Country Club, stopping for a photo overlooking the shores. John M left the group after two climbs while the rest of us went down for the third climb back up.

Oleg was preparing for a beer party at his house so he left us after the third climb. We faced Pacifica Drive next, the fourth face. The group got strung out a bit, I was near the back pedaling up with Len. He left at the top of Soledad Mountain Road to get back to his job site, the man does not know what retirement is; working machine. There were about 6 of us left to climb Via Valverde, things were really starting to hurt. We caught back up to Tony near the top, he skipped the fifth climb. Hodges was heading toward downtown, so Ernst led us down Via Capri, back up Calle Del Oro, through UCSD campus and down Torrey Pines. He pedaled off towards Carmel Valley while Tony, Claus, Jim and I pootled along the bike path. Jim and I were almost done. Claus and Tony had to get back to Poway and beyond, dark clouds loomed on the horizon.

Jim hammered the section between Carmel Valley Road and CDS, I hid on his wheel. Claus and Tony caught up to us at the light. I peeled off and got home with 60 miles and 5,300 feet of climbing. Jim finished with about the same. Claus got in another century while Tony had a flat in RB and called to get home; at least he missed the rain. It was a fun and painful Five Faces of Soledad, a few photos are in the link below.

Alpine Loop Ride Report

Alpine Loop Ride Report-1 April 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: Jim W, Rick W, Tony, Hodges, Len, Neil and Rob

It was a cool morning and the turn-out for the ride looked to be only 5 riders at the Garden Road start. I was my usual late self getting going, so I sped along Poway Road to get to the 7-11store in time. Hodges was even later and he had to go through his medical update again so we knew what to do if he fell and explain that he was riding downtown on the way back from Alpine. We immediately picked up one more rider, Len, as he was parking along Garden. I felt bad for Jim, Rick W was going to have to leave early, there was no one that could keep pace with Jim for what is normally a tough ride. We rode to SPP, Rick W and Jim took off on the climb and then we all regrouped at Highway 67. Hodges helped shepherd Tony much of the day. With Rick leaving at the bottom of 67, it was down to Jim on point with Len and I hiding as best we could. Hodges and Tony swept.

Good news for Jim came when we made the turn past El Capitan High School, we picked up Neil. Jim had someone to play with now! Those two kept up a fast pace over to Old Highway 80. I could not keep up and also watched Len spin away as well. Hodges and Tony swept. We regrouped at the I-8 underpass, a bit before the Harbison Canyon descent. Len had to go to a job site, so he reversed course. We were back down to 5 riders. I escaped off the front at the start of Harbison and got a good lead on the group; I thought for sure I would make it to the start of the Dehesa climb out in front. Not to be, Jim and Neil flew by me just ahead of the stop sign at the bottom. They motored up the climb, disappearing out of sight. I soloed Dehesa. Hodges and Tony swept.

We regrouped at the pharmacy store in Alpine. The three of us waited about 30 minutes for Hodges and Tony. They finally showed, a mechanical had slowed them down. The five of us headed back with Tony falling a bit behind along Old Highway 80. When we got back to Lakeside, Neil and Hodges headed straight while Jim and I turned to ride towards 67; Tony was not in sight. By the time we got to the bottom of 67, Tony was in front of us. He had taken the more direct route while we rode Willow Road and Moreno Ave to the climb. Jim had been pulling me along for quite some time, I told him to head off and I would pootle up 67 with Tony.

Jim sped off quickly. Tony and I climbed together for a bit before I went ahead. I stopped for a nice view of the very full San Vicente Reservoir and pedaled to SPP. Tony caught me just before the light. I had planned to stop at the Subway store along SPP for a water break so Tony joined me. We were both in need of a rest. We finally got enough motivation to pedal home. Tony turned north on Community Road while I headed to Black Mountain Road for a final climb back to the bike path. I made it home, 73 miles and 5,400 feet of climbing; a good ride. Below is a link with some photos.

Oceanside Coastal Cruise Ride Report

Oceanside Coastal Cruise Ride Report-29 April 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: Sheehan, Guido, Paul P, John M, Tony, Cresap, Hodges, Rick W, Jim and Rob

The ride name is misleading most of the time. Tony has added a bunch of elevation after Oceanside Harbor by riding Sleeping Indian Road and over through Bonsall before circling back through Escondido; that ride is a lengthy 85 miles. It was a hot and Santa Ana windy Saturday, a great day for a coastal cruise. We started on the 56 bike path in PQ and rode to PCH. Paul, Rick W, Jim and Sheehan broke away from the group through Solana Beach, we regrouped by Swami’s. The group cruised along Neptune Road before looping back to PCH. Guido was back riding in a group ride for the first time in quite a while, good to see him out. He and Cresap bid adieu in Encinitas and circled back down the coast. Sheehan turned right at La Costa Road and looped back through Elfin Forest to get to Poway.

The rest of us kept up a good pace into Carlsbad. Rick W left us at Cannon Road as he turned inland. Once in Carlsbad Village, the traffic got congested and I crept out front. The group behind did not react. I continued to sneak farther away past the Oceanside Pier. Despite the protestations from Hodges, the group was too late in closing the gap. I cruised into the harbor turnaround well ahead of the fast closing pursuers. We regrouped at the bathroom, I announced I was skipping Sleeping Indian. Tony tried to twist my arm but only Jim volunteered to do the extra miles in the heat and wind. It was still fairly nice in Oceanside but the winds were gusty. Tony and Jim must have suffered to complete the full Sleeping Indian Loop. I saw 85+ miles and 4K+ of elevation gain from each of their Strava posts, good for them. Congrats, great riding gentlemen.

The rest of us–Hodges, Paul P, John M and me were heading back down the coast. Hodges was saving himself for the E’tape the following day. I am sure the ride report for that event will be coming soon. Paul had more family duties and I was just too tired to ride inland. We started together in Oceanside. It was such a beautiful day with nice waves, I wanted to get a photo near the pier. The wind gusts had other ideas. Just as I pulled out my camera and was riding with no hands, a big gust hit my bike. I was barely able to save the fall, to the delight and chuckles of Paul and Mike just behind me. Well, no photos but no fall. I rode by some friends out on their Saturday ride at the south end of Oceanside so I stopped to chat a bit. Paul, Hodges and John continued to Carlsbad. After a nice chat, I soloed the rest of the way home, hiding on the wheels of a tri-bike group for a bit and chasing other riders down the coast. I finally saw John again in Solana Beach just as a friend of Rick & Denise was pushing ahead. His name was Jay and he works at Illumina, good rider. I rode with him back to the 56 bike path. By the time I got home it was just about 64 miles and only 1,800 feet of climbing; pales in comparison to the efforts of Tony and Jim. Below are a few photos from the ride, most taken while not riding.

RSF, Del Dios & HVR Ride Report

RSF, Del Dios & HVR Ride Report-15 April 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: Neil, Rick W, Larry, Hodges, Bernie, Todd, John M, Sheehan, Tony, Bob P, Eric R and Rob

It was a ripper of a ride, we averaged 21 mph for the first hour and almost 18 mph for the full ride, at least on my Garmin; others were much faster. We met at the Black Mountain corner and the ride start innocuous enough with a small surge as we rode over the bridge to Santaluz. By the time we picked up Proulx at the south entrance the pace was on fire. The usual suspects–Rick W, Larry, Neil and Bernie–were out front on the Three Witches descent–not a PR for me, but still almost 34 mph. The group flew along El Apajo and the short climb to the start of Stud Loop.

After a short break to regroup, we hammered Stud Loop and stopped again at Del Dios. John M skipped the loop and was out front. Hodges rolled through and then we took off. Larry and Neil pushed the pace on Del Dios, Rick W was right behind and I hid on his wheel. We all spread out on the climb past the Lake Hodges dam and flew along Lake Drive before stopping at the corner of Via Rancho Parkway. The ride was now about a hour old, we had ridden 21 miles and the legs were feeling it.

Things did not slow markedly as we spun to the gas station near the mall. We met up with Eric R who joined the group for the fun up HVR. After riding over the lake pedestrian bridge we lost Todd and Neil as they had other responsibilities for the day. Hodges cut across Mule Hill to get in more BWR training. We rode to the start of HVR. Sheehan continued along Pomerado for home, the rest headed towards the climb.

Things spread out on the HVR climb. Larry, Rick W & Bernie were on point. Eric R was just ahead of me and Bob P, Tony and John swept up the group. I caught up to Eric just after Starvation Mountain and we rode to the regroup point on Archie Moore Road. Bob P rode up a few minutes later. No sign of Hodges, John M or Tony; they had told us not to wait. My plan was to go across Archie Moore and 67. Larry convinced me and Proulx to go to the end of HVR; he promised to keep it at a "civil" pace. There were 6 of us riding along the top sections of HVR. I set PR’s just barely holding onto the wheels of the guys as we screamed all the way to the light; not real civil if you ask me.

I said I was done, time to pootle. The six of us still stayed together down 67, past the Mussey Grade turn and to the store. Eric needed water so they stopped. Bob P and I continued on with our now much slower pace as we yelled, "you guys can catch us!" Bob and I trudged past Mt Woodson and headed for Poway Grade. Just as we got to the turn, Larry, Bernie, Rick W and Eric flew south on 67 at a "civil" pace; boy was I glad to be heading down Poway Grade. We slowly spun back along Ted Williams and the bike path towards PQ. I left Bob to get the last few miles home himself when I hit the turn to my neighborhood. I had 58 miles, almost 4,200 feet of climbing and a pace of almost 18 mph, it was a ripper of a ride. Some photos of the ride on in the link below.

Alpine Challenge Ride Report

Alpine Challenge Ride Report–22 April 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: John M, Rick B, Len, Voris, Denise B, Paul P, Bill & Peggy B and Rob

The past few years of the Alpine Challenge have been a little tough; cold temperatures, freezing/sleeting rain and even snow on top of Mount Laguna. Only the bravest of riders, like Bernie B, made it to the top; most of us wimps went short and finished the 100 km or even the 50 mile loop. Those memories faded fast with warm weather projected for the Alpine Challenge this year. We were only able to convince a handful of Descenders to participate in this years ride. We were fortunate to have Dave Voris back visiting from Nor Cal. Paul P started very early, about 6:15 am, and completed the 100 mile, almost 11K of climbing, ride. Bill and Peggy started just before the group roll-out and also completed the 100 mile ride. Congrats to Paul, Bill and Peggy. Denise started a bit ahead of the group too due to the foster kittens she and Rick recently started to care for at their home. She sped through the 50 mile ride and overcame a flat on her way back to Alpine. Hermann and Jeremy Schafer rode the 100 km ride, with Jeremy adding in a few more miles. I saw both of them at the finish.

The group of Descenders at the 7:30 am planned roll-out consisted of Voris, Rick B, Len, John M and Rob. It was already approaching 60 degrees with bright sunshine planned ahead. We left Summers Past Farms and headed towards Harbison Canyon. Rick B glided along easily on his ElpitiGO, while the rest of us pedaled furiously to keep up the pace. We all descended the canyon together and started the climb up Dehesa. For reasons I do not recall, I took off and pushed the pace up the climb, separating myself from the rest of the guys. Voris and Rick caught me just before the turn at Tavern Road, with Len just behind; John M swept up the group.

We continued along the climb up Japatul Valley Road, passing a number of riders, and took a quick water stop at the second SAG break location. The four of us rode up and under I-8 and made our way past the Descanso pit stop. Voris pushed the pace up to Guatay on Old Highway 80, Len and I fell off the pace while Rick just hung onto his wheel. Dave & Rick descended into Pine Valley ahead of me and Len. I slowed even more and Len closed the gap to Dave & Rick. We had decided to just complete the 100 km ride and make the loop through Pine Valley; Laguna Mountain would have to wait. I was only about 100 meters behind the guys when they turned at the end of Pine Valley. I still managed to take a wrong turn and got a bit lost as I looped back to the climb. Len and I left rest stop ahead of Dave & Rick but they blew by us on the climb, we regrouped and rode hard back by the Descanso stop. I had burned all my matches and needed more water; I stopped. Dave, Rick and Len continued on the Descanso loop. It was the last I saw of Dave & Rick until we all got back to the finish.

I stopped for only a few minutes before taking up the chase. I climbed back to the I-8 underpass and sped down Japatul Valley and Japatul Road. There was a Drew Peterson sighting by me, he was riding up Japatul as I flew downhill; a quick wave and yell was all I got out. It was getting hotter, I rode alone, passed only a few riders and made my way back into Alpine. I spotted Len at the traffic light at Arnold Way. We rode together back to the start. I got in 63 miles and 5,800 feet of climbing in just about 4 hours. The temperatures climbed fast, the last few miles were hot. It was approaching 90 degrees. I am sure the 100 mile crew suffered in the heat; more congrats to them.

Rick, Dave, Len and I ate a nice lunch and drank a beer. John M finished his ride. We spotted Drew back in the finish area. It was good to see him and he spent some time talking to the guys. I had to bug out. The below link shows some photos from the fun day of riding Japatul. Hope you can come next year.

Elfin Forest and Double Peak Ride Report

Elfin Forest and Double Peak Ride-8 April 2017

by Bernie Bogard

It was a nice, cool, cloudy morning as the group met at the corner of RB/Pomerado. Included were Andrey, Marissa, Rick W, Garet, his fast friend Justin, Claus, John M and Tony. Across the stunningly beautiful Lake Hodges, still with grown trees in the middle of a lake and lovely reflections. Pleasant pace up Valley Parkway to Bernardo where it was a little spirited up the hill, then skirting construction used an alternate route around a gate and headed to Elfin Forest. Seemingly appearing out of the heavens, Hodges was present before the cruise through the forest where Garet and Rick paced us until Rick melted his tire tube from the speed and flatted. Lots of mountain bikers in an organized race/ride coming our way. Painful ascent to town of Elfin Hills courtesy of Rick W. Hodges and others may have gone up Questhaven. Regroup and on our way to Double Peak with Rick W, Garet and Justin digging deep. Bill Braamse and his wife Peggy were already at the top, group took a break then said goodbye to Justin and Garet and headed to RSF. Onto Stud Loop where HODGES CAME ALIVE (after whining about "hurty knee" "don’t wait for me, hurty knee"). He and Bill were way out front of the group, Rick W and Claus also showing their strength. Just to show it wasn’t a fluke, Hodges trailed only Bill and Rick, heading up 3 Witches. The group left Claus to go get his 115 miles/8k feet at Camino Del Sur and the rest followed Bill north on CDS, to a quieter route through 4S to West Bernardo where more splits occurred as the group headed home. Yet another great day on the bike in San Diego.

Oceanside, Sleeping Indian and Twin Oaks Valley Road Ride Report

Oceanside, Sleeping Indian and Twin Oaks Valley Road Ride Report-25 March 2017

The group started from 56/Black Mountain heading west to the coast. Rick W lead the group which included Jim W, Paul P, Flo, Bill, Andrey, Marissa, Hermann and Stephan. Jim led a painful push up the hills into Del Mar then some of the crew shared the load toward Oceanside ie Rick, Jim, Flo and Stephan. Stephan and Hermann dropped off at Starbucks. The remaining group gathered at the harbor, splitting into a group going back down the coast while Jim, Flo, Paul, Bill and I went to the 76 Bike path. After introducing Flo and Paul to Sleeping Indian (an audible gasp was heard from Flo upon his seeing that you’re not done after the "wall" that’s visible from the start of that portion), we followed our intrepid leader Jim down a hill leading us back down to Sleeping Indian. After thanking him for the opportunity to add some climbing to our coast ride we retraced our descent and got back on track, headed to Olive Hill. We said goodbye to Bill as we turned off Gopher Canyon to the rural Twin Oaks Valley road, with it’s own "wall". Pleasant ride through the north county followed until marred by a nasty trucker threatening the group along Twin Oaks Valley country portion. Altered the route a bit to go to Elfin Hills, RSF road to RSF to 3 witches where the remaining group split up at Camino Del Sur to head home. Jim definitely has gotten his legs back after limited miles for a while. Flo and Paul got introduced to a beautiful part of the county to ride bikes as well as having a bit of a work out from the looks of it. Yet another special day of Descenders riding. Congrats to the Dirty Devil participants, Hodges and Oleg that I could see.

Lake Wohlford, Couser, Rice and Rainbow Ride Report-18 March 2017

by Bernie Bogard

A nice, cool morning greeted the group at North County Fair. Present were Rick W, Garret, Claus, Hermann and his friends Stephan and Stephan, Marisa, Andrey and myself. Tony was missing in action, late even though we nearly rode by his house and up Mary Lane. Rick led us up Mary Lane, we then journeyed to Wohlford where Stephan outpaced the group, waiting patiently at the top where we learned that Garret had been hit by the mirror of an aggressive truck, fortunately not injured. After a break, onto Woods Valley for a spirited sprint led out by the strong ones, not me. On through Valley Center to Couser, lost Bill, Marisa and Andrey who turned on West Lilac and made their way back . With Claus’s encouragement the rest of us went to Rice Canyon following a fun Couser descent toward 76, Then to Rainbow and the store by 395 where we fueled up for the ride home. The remaining group got split up and Rick, Claus and I headed through Escondido until Claus headed out Felicita to get to Del Dios and his 120+ miles. Rick and I made our way back to Poway. Fun day with nice people, just another Descenders ride.

descenders Redlands Strada Rossa Ride 2017

Strada Rossa Ride Report-18 March 2017

by Mike Hodges

Strada Rossa – meaning red road – is a play on the name “Strada Bianche” the famed Italian Spring neo-classic race that traverses the while dirt lanes of Tuscany. Our very own red roads can be found nestling among the foothills of the San Bernardino mountain range around Redlands. The ride – not really a race, certainly not chipped or timed – starts at a the Ritual Brewery in Redlands and does a loop. The first 50 miles gives 60K elevation with about 2/3rds off road. Yep – have a think about that … its very hard, akin to Julian death March. Indeed I tried to bail out at this time but good thing I didn’t as the last 30 miles are a lot easier. See my Strava. I recall there was 8K of climbing at mile 80 so 30 miles with 2K climbing was relatively speaking easy peasy to what had come before. And its 2/3rds off road. The folks who organize the ride are the antithesis of BWR – they deliberately keep the prices down as rallying cry against the borzois highly priced races/rides that are now among us. Not sue they would like it by I group them all together as my Spring Classics i.e. Knowbly Kobly (ride was few weeks ago), Strada Rossa, Dirty Devil and BWR. This year I am doing the last three and next year will do all four.

So to the ride – or my experience thereof. There are three ride distances 90 64 and 30 – I was doing the 90. About 50 started on the 90 and were loosely off at a bit after seven and gently perambulated out the car park and immediately on the first dirt section. I had no idea of the ratio of dirt to road but had chosen to ride my X bike (35 knobblies at back and 27 slick on front – don’t ask … I should have put knowbies on the front also) having seen all the other racers do likewise. No one I could see was on 25 cc road bike and there were a few MTBs as well. This would actually be a great day out for a MTB – but who said cycling should be easy! We stayed on a flat dirt section for a few miles and went through orange orchards. The smell of citrus was amazing and this stimulant would accompany the riders on and off throughout the day for the many times we came upon an orchard. Guess our avocadoes don’t smell as nice as Redlands oranges. The first ten miles of flat dirt where neutral – a pace that had me breathing hard but not lung busting stupid like BWR. I followed a Kangaroo on a bike – actually that was the front marker who had a blow up kanga on his seat. The rider was bouncing along nicely (sorry).

The first climb (the first climb of many and they all became blurred) was steep and about ten minutes in length then everyone (except me) screamed down the back side – I walked and was dropped, though not sure if this counts as an official drop but I never saw the lead group again. I was now lost as the signs were painted red arrows on the ground and I was looking for signs in the trees (which were absent) – I missed the talk at the beginning as I was confident I would keep up which had quickly been shown to be a fallacy. After some backtracking I got back on the route and hooked up with three of the local club riders who were putting on the event and had downloaded GPS map route. Despite this our three locals got lost again – presumably the Kangaroo was leading the fast boys and girls without problem. After some alternate route jerry mongering we were back on the official route and climbing a slidey slipey gravely 11% grade which I think went to 16% (I was walking at that time). Climb went on for about 20 minutes. Then we made a lovely sweeping decent and back on to terra firma/tar mac …. For about ten minutes then back on the dirt. This repeated itself several times. In the BWR I love when we hit the dirt and miss it when we go back on the road. The opposite was taking place here – every road reconnection was a respite. Maybe the SR is truer to the Roubaix/Flanders paradigm?

Soon I was on my own as the three (2 guys and a lady) riders in the orange club kit left me. I was truly on my own now in the middle of nowhere, with no route map and dodgy signs – I was having a blast. The challenge of survival against the odds. Every so often I see my orange compadres in the distance. At one point I descended in to a dry river bed and walked the bike for five minutes – it was really nice to stretch and use different muscles. At the end of the river was my reward a 25% hike a bike climb to the top – latter I found out this was called “the Wall” – presumably the river bed is called” the great sandy dry river creek”. At the top was a multiple acre green Alpine meadow– the contrast between the light grey/red colors of the shale at the bottom of the dry river and the verdant nature of the Pampas was stark. Smooth red undulations were at the bikes disposal – I chuckled thinking of the name Strada Rossa. Had about 30 minutes riding to cross the green top and emerged to a road that had the 3-4 % gradient exposed heat grind – way in the distance I saw some oranges or was it my riders. The heat shimmered off the tarmac – glancing down at my Garmin doing the math …half way though… 4.5 hrs … do I have enough left in the tank to do this again? I got to some trees with shade and sat down to eat rice cakes – I had now eaten six of my allotted seven. It would be too risky to carry on for the full 90 so I decided that I would bail and do the 64. A few miles latter at the crest of the road climb I reached a sag stop (there were seven sags in total and they were all excellently staffed and supplied). My Garmin said 60 miles and nearly 7K of climbing. The Broom Wagon riders were there and informed me that they were doing the 64 which started later than the 90 and that if I came with them then I would de facto be on the 64 mile. Took me a while to work out that by “bailing” to the 64 I would end up doing the 90. At the time I thought it was an excellent idea so off we trouped. Next up we went into a managed park – again green with some trees and lots of lops and cuts backs. Can only be a few miles across but we were diving down and climbing short rizers for at least 30 mins. A nice river crossing as well but the piece de resistance was the view by the tree – take a look at the picture with the tree and my bike. It is an Alpine view with the snowcapped mountains in the background. When we popped out the park we had a ten mile slightly too fast for me descent with some ski sections thrown in – that’s how I braved it when we hit the sand traps I said this is just like skiing light hands hold the bike straight and don’t break.

The final 30 miles from the sag where I met the boom wagon were relatively easy compared to the fist 50-60. For one the pace slowed a bit as we picked up people from the 64 mile group. It was nice to be with riders as well and chatting about the land and what they do in the area – Oranges are a big thing to Redlands, suppose that’s why the club colors are just so. At the final sag stop – now 3 pm and quite hot there was a bit of a delay as one rider had a injury and needed some attention, I gallantly offered to go ahead and get the beers in (yes I was a bit impatient). After being chased by some bees – the ride goes straight through a bee colony – and crossing a river that was kneed deep – I promptly got lost. Only ten miles away and had to rely on Google maps to get me home via a monster climb to get my 8.5K climbing that had been posted as the 90 mile route metrics.

So, what was the ride about? Not sure – but I really want to do it again. It was beautifully different in many ways – the scene the vibe. Next year I will not knobblies on both tires and down load the map, plus will twist the arm of a descender to do the ride with me (Eileen, Rob, Bernie need not apply).

Should have been there.

Mussey Grade & Pamo Ride Report

Mussey Grade and Pamo Ride Report-4 March 2017

by Rob Verfurth

Riders: Larry, Rick W, Hodges, Sheehan, Flo, Bernie, Hermann, Jeremy, Lou & Hyuan (new local riders), Cresap on Mussey Grade and Rob

There was no one at the 56 bike path corner, so I rode over alone to Spring Meadow to get Hodges. It was a brisk morning and Mike was putting on two sets of gloves. We cruised to the 7-11 store to meet the group. On the way there, while riding on Poway Road, Mike Farkas gave us a horn honk and a wave as he was driving westbound for his own biking event. The group was good sized at the start with lots of Descenders out for a group ride; we also had two new riders–Lou and Hyuan. Hodges gave us his medical update so we would be sure to not leave him on the side of the road after a crash with the potential for a bleed-out. After his medical education, we spun off for SPP.

Larry, Bernie, Rick W and Flo kept the pace civil on the climb to Highway 67. We regrouped at the top and were joined by Hermann & Jeremy; we now had 11 riders. The pace was quick along 67 and I fell off the back of the leaders. We all waited at the bend by Mount Woodson before heading fast to Mussey. Larry, Rick W, Flo, Bernie, Jeremy and Hermann sped along in a paceline. I was last man in the group while the others never made contact. They took the corner at Mussey and I continued to lose ground. I descended Mussey alone with Sheehan catching me right near the bottom. The lead guys were already climbing back up. Sheehan and I rode up Mussey together and were joined by Hodges and the new guys who rode up with us. We met Cresap at Mussey and the group got back together at Highway 67. Cresap and Sheehan had to bail so the rest of us kept up the paceline along Dye Road.

Hodges had volunteered to keep the new riders swept up while the rest of the group was off the front and on our way to Pamo. There were a number of riders who had never made the descent of Pamo so we discussed speed safety, especially on the off camber turns. The group sped safely down the descent and stopped where the road ends to enjoy the beautiful views. It was super lush and green in the valley; we almost hated to leave. Unfortunately, the steep ascent beckoned. We spread out on the climb and regrouped at the top.

I took one last photo of the guys who had made it to the top and had to ride on to get home. I decided to go down the Ramona Grade and up Bandy to HVR and loop around 4S, a more scenic route. The rest of the guys went back into Ramona to get water, retraced their ride along Dye Road and 67, before breaking up and going down SPP and other routes home. I got in 72 miles with 4,600 feet of climbing. I know Larry and Bernie were approaching 90+ miles by the time they got home. The early portions of the ride were fun and fast paced. My pootle home was slower, none-the-less a great day on the bike. Photos are in the link below.
