Descenders Ride Report for Sat, 4 Aug

Hi Guys,

We had another good ride on Saturday, heading up to Oceanside Harbor.  It was its usual fast and furious ride.  We started on the 56 bike path with Guido making a cameo appearance.  He had already ridden over an hour and had family responsibilities ahead.  I think he just wanted to get in the picture.  We picked up Frankie somewhere along the bike path and then Jeff S and Eileen met us in Del Mar.  Frankie brought along one of his riding buddies, Noel; another good rider.

The cruise up PCH was fun and the group stayed together, over a dozen riders.  We lost Sheehan at La Costa as he had to head back inland, still a long ride home via Del Dios and around Lake Hodges.  A few miles south of Carlsbad Pete Wood and Dave Voris motored off the front.  Rick allowed Claus, Geoff and me to get on his train for the acceleration to close the gap to their wheels.  We were smokin’ heading into Carlsbad Village, saved by a red light so I could catch my breath.  Noel, Frankie and Yi-Shiou closed back to the group with Jeff S, Eileen and Bill coming fast.  I tried to sneak away just before the Oceanside Harbor turn around but the group quickly accelerated to blow by me with Jeff S, Voris and Geoff leading the way.  Voris kicked in a higher gear and hit the loop first setting a PR in Strava for the segment as well.

We met up with Denise and Amy at the turn and stopped for water before heading back south.  The traffic in Oceanside was already starting to build.  Eileen had to take evasive action and good riding form to avoid a car that suddenly stopped in front of her.  Geoff and I moved through the cars and foot traffic back south.  We picked up the pace and somehow got away from the group.  Geoff is super strong and pulled us the whole way back down PCH.  We made the turn on La Costa and made our way towards RSF.  No group in sight.  I lost contact with Geoff on the climb up to Lago Lindo but he patiently waited for me at the top.  We cruised Stud Loop and rode toward the Three Witches.  The group caught us at the light at the bottom of the climb having skipped Stud Loop.  Geoff was not done yet, he led the group up Three Witches but flatted near the top.

I grabbed Claus at the regroup spot to show him how to ride back to Poway.  The group rode through lower Santaluz while I just limped back south on Camino del Sur.  The ride for me was 66 miles and the legs felt the effects of another great Descenders ride.  Attached are a few photos.

Descenders Ride Report for Sat, 28 July

Hi All,

From the looks of Strava we had riders out all over CA both days this weekend.  The NORCAL Descenders team did their first official ride near the Redwood Regional Park.  Voris and Keith climbed over 4,000 feet during their 50 mile ride.  Look forward to joining them on a club ride soon.

The group ride on Saturday was 14 riders strong and a full international contingent.  We had two Aussies-Bill and Pete, two Germans-Rick and Claus, one Brit-Jeff S and one Taiwanese -Yi-Shiou; along with a handful of mutts with mostly European background.  Jeff S rode over from Del Mar to meet Guido and me on the bike path.  We pedaled over to normally busy Spring Meadow to find it all quiet; no one came to ride with us!  The group got together by the 7-11 and we rode up towards SPP.  The pace of the climb was reasonable until the double dose of Matt–Baab and Davis–decide to test their legs.  The fast guys flew to the top and we regrouped along 67.

Everyone stayed together past Mt Woodson towards Mussey Grade.  It was a bright and beautiful morning as we sped down Mussey.  The climb back up was fairly fast and a number of us got blown off the back.  At the top of Mussey Cresap decided to head back home.  He wanted to save some energy for his planned European vacation starting this week so he skipped Pamo.  The Dye Road pace was even faster than the climb up Mussey.  Fortunately for me, I got a first class ticket on the Bienias Bullet Train.  We picked up a few others that could not keep pace and flew to the end of Dye.  The remaining 13 riders went through Ramona and over towards Pamo.

Jeff S and Pete took off from the group.  I hung on their wheel and we motored to the fast descent of Pamo.  The group rejoined and started the steep climb back up.  A much needed water break took place at the gas station, followed by another "too fast for me pace line" along Dye Road.  Back at 67 the group split with Eric, Matt B, Clause and Farkas heading down HVR while the rest of us went towards Poway Grade.  Matt D, Guido, Ernst, Jeff S and I sped down the Grade while Rick took Bill and Pete back down SPP.  Our newest Rider, Yi-Shiou, hung great for most of the ride but his leg cramps slowed him down some as we headed back down Poway Grade.  At the bottom Matt D and Ernst went along Espola while Jeff S pulled Guido and I back towards the 56 bike path in some strong gusty winds.  I was beat after 70 miles and 4,500 feet of climbing.  A fast and fun Descenders group ride.

Here are a few photos.

Descenders Ride Report for Lake Wohlford, Couser and Rice Canyon

Hi All,

We had a good group ride in perfect conditions yesterday in North County.  The Lake Wohlford loop is one of the club favorites.  We had 14 riders meet at the mall to start the ride.  We got a welcome cameo visit from Dave Boyle who never seems to lose his riding form.  The Ranchos rolled at the same time so we all rode up Bear Valley, about 35 in total.  The Descenders turned up Mary Lane, where Geoff B pulled ahead quickly.  Geoff was going to have to leave early so he was pushing hard.  The group rode along Citrus and on towards the climb of Wohlford.  Bob R had already tackled one KOM on his way over to the start of the ride.  He attacked on Wohlford, trying to gain another.  Matt B rode over 12 mph to the top of the climb, jumping into the top 25 riders on Strava but still well short of the Rick B Kom.  We regrouped just as the Ranchos rolled onward.  At Woods Valley, Bob R was again looking for speed.  We started our fast pace line with the Ranchos just ahead.  Voris, Guido, Geoff, Matt and I got onto the back of the Ranchos group as we sped towards the end of Woods Valley.  Fast and furious for a few miles.  We regrouped and let the Ranchos head on up Lilac.  Bob R and Geoff had to head home while the remaining 12 riders rode towards Couser Canyon.

We all climbed up Couser and regrouped at the top.  Bernie went on the descent first and alone to roll by the spot of his crash.  After a fast, fun and curvy descent we headed over to Rice Canyon after crossing route 76.  The long climb up Rice was not too steep and the tree covered sections were beautiful.  We had blue skies, no wind and it was not too warm, great riding weather.  At the top of Rice Canyon we all rode over the the church for a short break and water refilling. The ride down Old 395 was uneventful if not its usual a bit boring.  We stopped at the camp ground store for more fluids.  Jeff S, Eileen and I headed out early to get some distance on what we knew would be a fast approaching rest of the gang.  We made it to the top for a brief rest in the shade as the rest of the guys came to regroup again.  The return was down Jesmond Dene and we all flew fast; Rick got out the yellow bus to bring Eileen and Jeff back to the group.  We spun back through Escondido and down Citrus to Bear Valley.  The final few miles were quick back to the start at the mall.  The group rode about 66 miles and a bit over 5,200 feet of climbing.  Some of the guys approached 80 miles with their rides back home.

Good day to be on a bike and out with the Descenders.  A few photos are attached below.

Scripps Old Pro Ride Report and Descenders Ride, Sat-7 July

Hi Guys,

I hope everyone had an enjoyable 4th of July holiday.  Guys were out riding, running and some even roller skating, according to Strava.

The Scripps Old Pro provided a nice 50 mile ride to earn a few BBQ beers.  I planned to drive to Cresap’s house but was stopped by the road closure near Lake Miramar.  I parked and rode to meet Jeff who was on his way to the start.  We met up with John Bittinger and Bob Raibert near the corner of the start.  Jeff headed over to do the group start while we went the other direction.  We saw Bernie riding toward the start as well but he did not hear us yelling.  Bob R, John and his buddy Rob and I rolled toward Carroll Canyon and then cut up towards Mira Mesa.  Our goal was to avoid the hectic surge of riders down Calle Cristobol.  We picked up Bryan Jones and Bob Proulx along Mira Mesa and our small group rode on.  The descent down towards Carmel Valley was very safe with only our small group and a few other riders.  A very strong rider named Rhonda was in our pack and she seemed to know many folks that we encountered along the way.

We climbed up El Camino Real, crossed Del Mar Heights and spun towards the polo fields.  I was very surprised that the peleton had not passed us yet and assumed they had a late start.  Bob P headed for home at Three Witches.  We headed towards Del Dios hoping to stay on point for a bit longer.  Garet H came out of Stud Loop and joined us on the climb.  The lead ride group blew by me near the top of the Del Dios climb with a second large group close behind.  The second group was full of Descenders–Bernie, Jeff, John B, Bob R, Bryan, Garet and myself.  We all flew towards Via Rancho Parkway.  Bernie got a flat a bit before the turn onto the highway.  Cresap was on point onto I-15 and lead the group onto Pomerado.  About a mile down Pomerado one rider was drinking and hit a bump.  He did an endo just to the front and right of me.  Most of the group rolled on with a few good samaritans stopping to pick up the pieces.  I hope he was ok.  We flew past RB Road and then hit a red light a few blocks south.  The light turned yellow and the arm went up in front for a stop.  Bob R, John and I were near the back so we slowed and then the group rolled through a very red light.  The three of us were abandoned at the light, the large group of 30+ riders kept going.

Bob took some major pulls and John drove the pace as well but we were not able to catch up to the group.  We hit many lights and just after we crossed Poway Road I drifted back, unable to hold the Bob R and John B pace.  I watched them climb away up Pomerado while I rode along solo toward the finish.  I crossed the line in just over 2:30, about 20 mph pace and gave congratulatory handshakes to Bob and John, still relaxing near the finish.  We all grabbed some water and spoke to Cresap who finished in the second group a few minutes ahead of Bob and John  (see below).  Great ride and I enjoyed my beers later in the day.  No photos so you will have to just accept we did the ride–check Strava.  Thanks to Bob R and John B for great ride and pull support.

Comments from Jeff Cresap:  While warming up, in front of the start pen, it appeared that the numbers of riders were less than last year, perhaps the “LA” impact on cycling is finally waning.   Rob and company left a little early via an alternate and safer route, planning that the group (and myself) would catch them at Mira Mesa and Black Mountain…the ride started at 7:07, and I didn’t see another Descender for about 20 miles.  The group started out at a quite reasonable pace (sub 25 mph) across Mira Mesa.  Once we hit the roller climbs down in Carmel Valley the first group was down to about 50 riders.  Rolling through Fairbanks was quite reasonable, everybody knew that the climbs before Del Dios, and Del Dios were just ahead….I was just able to maintain contract with the back of the lead group to  bottom of the Del Dios climb.  At least in the front group everybody was riding pretty safe.  The climb split the group in half, and I found myself at the front of the second group, but out of nowhere I saw several Descenders… (not sure exactly where or how).  Next thing I’m sitting on Bernie”s  and several other Descenders who surged and are now dropping the second group riders like a bad check.  I was deep into the HRM red zone, before the right turn onto Via Rancho Parkway, on VRP it got still harder, but then the pace eased a hair just in the nick of time.  The first group got stopped by the light on VRP, but our chase group didn’t and we caught the first group riders at the light.   I just rolled with the first group until the bottom of the climb up Pomerado, at which time the climbers once again rolled off the front, and I was back in the second group for the rest of the ride.

We have a Saturday Descenders group ride planned.  It is one of our beauties in north county.

Descender Ride Report-Oceanside Loop-30 June

Hi Guys,

We had a good group ride on Sat.  The group was not too large, about 11 riders.  We had a number of guys who were not able to attend the Monster Climb VI trip, so some legs were fresh!  The planned easy cruise to Oceanside Harbor blew up quickly as guys did not stay together along the 56 bike path.  Rumor has it that we did not all correctly stop at the Del Sur stop light as a full group.  The pace along the curvy sections of the bike path was way too fast given the environment of busy tight paths with lots of walkers and other riders but we made it to PCH unscathed.  We all finally regrouped at 15th Street in Del Mar and continued north.  We lost riders along the way who had family obligations.  By the time we passed Encinitas we were down to a handful of guys–Bob R, Chad, Matt, Cresap, Guido, Jeff S and me.  The pace was fast the furious all the way into Oceanside Harbor.  Chad and Cresap led out Bob and Matt as they blazed to the turnaround.  New speed records were set on Strava, the bar has been raised.  I watched from the back and regrouped at the bathroom stop by the harbor.  We lost Cresap as he did not stop.  After a short break in the sunshine we pedaled off and met up with Matt’s twin–Chris Baab.  The group pedaled south at an even faster pace.  I blew up totally before we got to La Costa.  Guido and Jeff S were waiting for me at the I-5 overpass.  We caught up with the guys before turning onto Olivahein.  I was hurting and told Matt–go ahead and do not wait for me up Camino Del Norte.  I cruised back through Rancho Sante Fe and over the river toward Fairbanks Ranch thinking the guys would be way ahead.  I spotted them waiting at the corner before the Three Witches Climb.  I needed water so went to the store.  Guido was generous enough to hang back with me as the group sped up the climb.  Guido and I pootled back to the 56 bike path and home.  The ride was about 65 miles for most, fairly flat but still a leg buster for me.

Attached are a few photos.

Action Item:  Who is riding the Scripps Old Pro 50 mile event on Wed, July 4th?  Bob R said he is riding.  Cresap says they can not do the event if he does not ride.  The ride starts at 7:00 on the corner of Scripps Ranch Blvd and Hilbert Street.  I plan to drive over to Cresap’s house by 6:30 and pedal to the start.

Hope to see some Descenders on the ride-

Rob

Monster Climbs 2012 Report (expanded, html)

* Note: this is an expanded HTML version of our posted ride report

Monster Climb VI-Kernville, CA

22-24 June 2012

The annual Descenders Monster Climb trip was set with great routes on the west side of the Sierras and another record number of riders.  A total of 19 Descenders met at Casa Voris for the drive toward our first day of riding.

Day 1 Crystal Lake-San Gabriel Mountains, 50 miles with 6,000 feet of climbing.

Ranked #40th in CA, #1 for longest climb and greatest elevation gain in Southern CA.

Looking fresh and ready for the Day 1 Ride to Crystal Lake from Azusa – Sheehan & Len already gone.

The group cars drove to Veterans Freedom Park in Azusa.  We all prepared for the ride up to Crystal Lake.  Len and Sheehan took off early while the rest of us posed for a group photo before the ride.  The group rode together past the Morris and San Gabriel Reservoirs as we started our climb.  Within 45 minutes of the start of the ride Matt got a flat so Rick, Ernst and Bernie stayed back to help.

Rob’s account:
The group split more and more as we climbed up the 15 miles of curvy roads to Crystal Lake.  Bob P and Guido were with me near the back with Cresap just ahead.  The switchback roads allowed for us to see riders coming from the rear.  Rick and Matt came roaring up and flew by us.  Bob P took off and passed a number of riders on his way to the top.  I rode mostly alone, passed Sheehan with a few miles to go and got to the Trading Post for a well-deserved rest.  The group started to descend back down to the start.  I wanted to pedal up to see the actual lake so rode a bit father, only to be disappointed that you have to walk down a path to get to the lake.  I met up with most of the guys waiting for me at the main intersection.  Rick, Oleg and Hodges went exploring farther up the main road, past the barrier.  Oleg was scoping out a future Descenders climb all the way up to Wrightwood.  I led out the group on the descent with Mike M on my wheel.  We had a good-sized lead but eventually got swept up by Matt, Oleg, Voris and Ernst.  The six of us sped along for more than 10 miles of great descending.  We split near the bottom and Ernst did a huge pull to bring Mike and me back into the group.

Oleg’s account: The group started thinning about 5 miles after passing East Fork – soon it was Peter Wood, Voris, Farkas and I, with Hodges chasing behind. Peter was feeling good and was pushing the pace – we caught Sheehan and soon Len – Len was able to hang with us for a while. Then Pete started really turning the screws on the pace – Len and Voris were smart enough to not participate but Farkas and I followed Pete. Soon I was forced to abandon the blistering pace, and backed off – Farkas was soon dropped from Pete’s wheel too.

I was riding some 20 seconds behind Farkas all the way until the right turn to Crystal Lake, but about 2 miles before the turn I heard a loud “Swoosh” and Rick passed me, as if I was standing still. Next thing I knew he went by Farkas and disappeared out of sight immediately. He ended up catching and passing Pete before Crystal Lake cabins too – according to Strava (can’t hide!) from East Fork to Crystal Lake Rick was whole 9 minutes faster than Pete and 8 minutes faster than Matt Babb, who was climbing very fast after his flat, second best time for the day.

We regrouped at the top, ate some sandwiches and had a few cokes and decided to head down. Several riders rode around trying to find the mysterious Crystal Lake, while Rick, Hodges and I explored the road closing – if we jump the gate and keep riding to Angeles Crest Hwy, the road takes us to Dawson Saddle on the longest continuous climb in continental US (over 7,000 ft!), and makes it possible to connect to Wrightwood, roads we rode on our 2010 Tour of California trip. An epic climb to try some day, for sure!  We descended into the headwind, forming a group of 6 riders, lead by fearless Descenders Matt and Ernst, and also including Voris, Rob, Mike McGowan and myself. It was fast and fun with a lot of fantastic views.

Rob’s summary: Everyone changed at the cars into driving clothes and we headed north towards Kernville.  The group got settled into the comfy Kernville Inn, started sampling the huge beer collection brought on the trip by Geoff B.  The brew master did not disappoint as we drank great tasting beers on the porch outside our rooms.  Guido had us all set for a good dinner at the Pizza Barn, a short walk from the hotel.  Pizzas, beer and salads replenished our depleted stores and then we strolled back to the porch for more beers.

Day 2: Shirley Meadows East and West, 60-95 miles with over 8,500 feet of climbing.

Shirley Meadows East is ranked #7 in CA, #15 in US. Ranked as #1 most difficult 5-mile section in CA (9.6% average). Shirley Meadows West is ranked #56 in CA.

Looking a bit scruffier after the Day 1 climb but ready to go for Day 2 – a huge day of climbing awaits.

Rob’s account: After a good breakfast we prepared for our second day of riding.  Oleg, Sheehan and I loaded up the support van and drove to the top of Shirley Meadow.  It was a bit cool but the sun was out. The east side of the climb includes the most difficult five-mile stretch of climbing west of the Mississippi along multiple double-digit grade ramps.  It is longer and almost as steep as l’Alp d’Huez and steeper and almost as long as the Tourmalet, two of the most famous and difficult climbs used regularly in the Tour de France. The group rode from the hotel south out of Kernville to Wofford Heights and made the turn west on Route 155 to start the climb.  We rode down the wickedly steep road to meet up with the guys now heading up.

Sheehan flew off into the distance while Oleg and I stayed under speed control to the bottom.  Farkas and Pete were leading the group up the climb with Matt and Rick just behind them.  The almost 7 mile ascent is very steep, averaging over 8% with some sections at 19%.  The group spread out all along the climb, riding to the top and then turning to ride a few more miles to Alta Sierra ski area, the end of the road.  We all rode back to the support car parked at the top and relaxed in the sun while eating and drinking.  It was still cool and Hodges was searching for arm warmers and/or a jacket.  He danced to “Boogie Shoes”, now a famous YouTube sensation.  The group spread out along the descent towards Glenville.  Guido, Sheehan and I cruised down together on the long descent of 15 miles regrouping at the Saddle Sore Saloon with Cresap, Len, Geoff and Bob P.  Most of the other guys rode farther west to Woody, another 9 miles down the road with more heat and climbing ahead to return back up the climb.  A small group consisting of Farkas, Rick, Pete and Matt, decided to venture towards Bakersfield.  They saw some great open road and lots of miles of cycling.

Our group that stopped in Glenville climbed back up Shirley Meadows West.  I was exhausted and got blown off the back of the group; it was a slow solo ride back to the top to the car.  We grabbed a bit more food and water and then rode once more to the very top at Alta Sierra.  Guido and Bill camped at the support car while we descended down the east side of Shirley again towards Wofford Heights.  We flew north back to Kernville at a blistering pace.  We were the early group to finish our day, the pool and beers beckoned.  We relaxed poolside waiting for the rest of the guys to return.  The lost boys of Woody were nowhere to be found.  Voris, Hodges, Ernst, Oleg, Jeff S, Bernie and Mike M all returned from the epic ride.  Guido and Bill waited at the car for the “lost riders”.  They all eventually returned but not before a few mechanical issues affected the ride.  Farkas blew up his carbon wheel, Ernst had shredded his front brakes and Matt B blew a tire at the bottom of Route 155 in Wofford.  Rick and Farkas rode a few more miles from the hotel to get in their 100-mile day.  We all swam, enjoyed the beautiful afternoon and drank the rest of Geoff B’s great beers.  Dinner Saturday evening was at another local restaurant, “That’s Italian”.  Guido again had all the logistics coordinated well.  We had a long group table in the back of the place and enjoyed good food and conversations about the days ride.

Oleg’s account: Just a few things add to Rob’s write-up – what an epic day! A few mishaps – first Matt and Farkas get lost on the Shirley Meadows East Climb (what does RFB stand for, anyone?). Voris and I crested to the top of the climb and found poor confused Pete who was wondering where everyone disappeared. Back at the support car we had a lot of fun – including some of the most ummm, let’s just say “interesting” dance moves that I will unfortunately never be able to erase from my memory now  (trust me, I tried!).

On the West side descent Guido and then Proulx both flatted. We stopped to offer help but then resumed again, forming a group of 7 or so riders (Voris, Ernst, both Jeff’s, Mike McGowan, Bernie and I) – Cresap turned back at Glenville. Hodges was chasing us and joined our group after our regroup at Woody. Pete, Matt, Farkas and Rick passed Woody and just kept on going (RFB #2), and we were confused when we got to Woody as to what happened to them. Our group of seven riders made it safely back to the car (the final, steeper 4-5 miles of Shirley Meadows West separated otherwise friendly group to single riders chasing each other), but only Guido and Bill Wood were there – no sign of the lead group of Farkas, Rick, Matt and Pete. We had an amazing pickle party, featuring what surely was the most delicious pickle I have ever tasted. Eventually we gave up on waiting and proceeded with descent. I had a front tire blowout on the super-steep turns of Shirley Meadows East while

chasing Bernie and Ernst at 30mph but miraculously managed to stay upright. But a quick tube change and I was riding with the rest of the boys back to Kernville. The mechanicals didn’t stop there – Matt also had a flat, Ernst melted his brakes and Farkas disintegrated his carbon wheels. Luckily, Guido saved the day with the support car. Despite 4 flats and two other serious mechanicals, nobody got hurt (except maybe for our eyes and memory brain cells during Hodges’ dance). And even though multiple riders got lost at two separate occasions, they eventually found their way back without any search and rescue operation. All’s well that ends well.

Day 3 Sherman Pass Road, 40-60 miles with 5,700 feet of climbing.

Ranked #8 in the USA, #4 in CA. Ranked #2 most difficult climb in CA 15 miles or longer (after Shirley Meadows).

Rob:
We packed up the cars after breakfast with Bob and Bernie and drove north to Johnny McNally’s restaurant.  It was another picture postcard weather day-blue sky, no wind and cool temperatures in the high 60’s.  Cresap, Sheehan and I took off first to get some lead on the group.  Cresap motored fast the first 5 miles until we got to the turn to Sherman Pass Road.  The west side of Sherman Pass is one of the toughest climbs in the country, ranked number 8 in the most difficult road bike climbs in the US. Isolated, beginning at the Kern River, the road immediately heads up the drainage at a steady grade.  It is longer than and almost as steep as Mt Ventoux; perhaps the most difficult climb in France.  We had 15 miles of climbing ahead with over 5,300 feet of elevation gain.  Our pace slowed up the steep grade with Cresap heading off.  I could see the other riders coming up the switchbacks.  Bob P, Geoff and Len came by first, followed by Bernie, Mike M and Jeff S.  We were spreading out along the mountain road.  Pete blew by me so fast I could only get a photo of him heading off around the next curve.  The views were spectacular.  More guys passed me, Hodges then Farkas.  Guido was sneaking up behind me while I took a few more photos.  Eventually the train of Rick, Voris, Ernst, Oleg and Matt sped up from below.  This was about halfway to the top.  I continued on my slow climb to the top of Sherman Pass.  The thickly forested roads were a treat to climb.  The top was at 9,200 feet and offered great views of Mount Whitney to the east.  Bob P had a great day climbing, reaching the top ahead of everyone except Pete.  We regrouped, took a photo and began the descent back down Sherman Pass Road.  The road was not quite as smooth and clean as Shirley Meadow but we had a fun time cruising back to the cars.  Everyone made it back except Hodges who tried to pedal over to Kennedy Meadows before finally returning; he covered an extra 20 miles.  A quick dip and bath in the very refreshing Kern River, a change of clothes and then a hamburger from Johnny McNally’s ensued before starting the drive back to San Diego.  The return trip was quick and fairly uneventful except for one minor passing error on 395 just north of Adelanto.  No harm – no foul, we all got home safely.

Oleg: It was a friendly and relaxing day at the office, as any third day of Monster Climbs ought to be. A group of Rick, Matt, Ernst and myself took it fairly easy, enjoying the scenery and had a nice group ride up the early slopes of Sherman Pass. We caught up to a few groups of riders, but did not push the pace until the final 30 minutes of the climb or so. There was some confusion as to whereabouts of Hodges – as I suspected, he decided to explore a connection towards Kennedy Meadows, the third-day climb of Monster Climbs 2011. Would have been nice to know beforehand, especially since easy to get lost on those roads or even crash. The descent down Sherman Pass was a bit dodgy for my taste, with a lot of gravel patches and potholes. After a nice swim in the river and some cheeseburgers we were off to home. To summarize Monster Climbs 2012 I would like to quote our own philosopher, Rick: “Niiice!”

Rob’s summary: The MC VI trip was a huge success.  We rode over 150 miles and climbed over 20,000 feet; some added even more mileage and elevation.  The weather was awesome, the roads were great to ride, the accommodations excellent, food good and great riding friends; an epic weekend to remember.

Descenders Ride for 9 June: Mussey and Pamo–Ride Reprt Addendum

Hi Guys,

Oleg captured the summary of the ride well.  I do want to add a few comments from my perspective.

The pace did not seem that pedestrian to me.  Even the climb up 67 towards Poway Grade and then Mt Woodson started to spread the group out.  I waited at the top of Mt Woodson and said good-bye to Ernst who had to head home while the last of the riders came together.  Dave E and Dan S looped back home so we were down to 10 riders.  I was now behind the front group flying towards Mussey.  I passed Garrett and Jeff S before the Archie Moore curve but could not close the gap.  Jeff S put it in overdrive and he blew by me.  I grabbed his wheel and he quickly closed to the lead group.  The pace down Mussey was not its usual blistering pace line, a nice respite.  Garrett had to head back down HVR so he missed the ride to Pamo.  We continued our pace line on Dye Road to Pamo.  That descent is always beautiful, all riders noting that a smooth 5 mile road extension is on our wish list.  The MTB riders came at us on the packed dirt road.  They stopped to share ride routes. Hodges is pushing for a dirt trail road ride.

The ride back towards Mt Woodson was uneventful until we had a near miss run-in with a large SUV.  The big, black car came at us during the cut through road we take at Mt Woodson, driven by a distracted driver "checking her mailbox".  We all pulled into the dirt on the side of the road, evening looking for potential bail out spots in the trees if she did not slow down.  Fortunately she quickly decelerated right in front of our group.  Hodges briefly attempted a polite dialogue that did not get through to this driver who seemed to deem our intrusion on the right side of the road as our problem.

All riders safely made it back to highway 67 and picked up speed toward the Poway Grade.  Bernie turned west while the rest of us went back via SPP.      The descent was quick and we all pulled hard back to the start at casa Voris.  Guido and I still had to pedal up the hill back to PQ.  We finished the great ride with about 73 miles and 4,600 feet of climbing.  Great training for Monster Climb.  Attached are a few photos.

Ride on-

Descenders, we had another fantastic day on the bike!
12 descenders: Guido, Rob, Hodges, Jeff S., Cresap, Eileen, Ernst, Bernie, Dan, Eric R., Garet and I (some had to depart early due to family obligations). The day started overcast, but the sun came out as we got closer to Ramona. We had a nice warmup pace early on, and kept things civilized down Mussey (Hodges, Garet and I pushed it a bit on the climb back up to 67). We had a nicely rotating paceline on Dye Rd., and nobody seemed to want to sprint towards San Vincente Rd – finally Eric jumped, and Cresap and I were on his wheel. After a monstrous leadout I went around Eric, only to have him go around me again in the final stretch – double kick! We descended into Pamo Road where we talked a bit to mountain bikers coming from Mesa Grande. Eric pushed the pace going up Pamo Rd. – he is now 3rd on strava, behind Rick and Neil.
We used rotating paceline and some fast descending to get back – Jeff S. got away on the Scripps Poway and it took a huge effort on my part to bridge up to him. Now we had a sizeable gap and we rotated well, trying to keep it going – however, Guido, Hodges and Rob would have none of it and easily closed the gap. A little too easily for my taste. I demand doping control!
62 miles (for me) with 4,000 ft climbed. (Meanwhile Rick set a new KOM, 45 minute on Kitchen Creek, improving his own time by almost 5 min!, as well as many other KOMs) Photos are attached, and also at http://goo.gl/PoQOc

Dudley Dream ride

Descenders, We had a fantastic ride from Santa Ysabel today.

I was told to cease and desist my use of “Dudley Dream Ride” term as it is a registered trade mark of Mike Hodges Inc. who  invented the original concept of riding the bike up Palomar (patent pending). Thanks, Mike, we truly appreciate it!

We started with 13 descenders from Santa Ysabel: Rick, Voris, Matt B., Guido, Mike “I invented Dudley Dream Ride” Hodges, Bernie, John and Len, Jeff and Eileen and Mike Farkas. Farkas refused to be in the group photo, but he was there! We also saw Mike McGowan and Mark Wineman, as well as Ernst and Sheehan who rode from Lake Henshaw up South Grade. This makes the total of 17, or 18 if you count Jim Knight who was doing one of his epic long rides – the descenders were all over the place!

It was already warm at the start and got even hotter. Voris who is in excellent climbing form lately (I suspect due to elevation training effect from airplane commuting he does!), went for several personal bests and has set #3 and #4 times on strava leaderboard for East Grade to Observatory and for East Grade to Observatory back to Mothers. Rick served as domestique – Rick didn’t set any KOMs today, as he already owns KOMs for most big climbs we did today, but he did something that is just as impressive – ride up South Grade while standing up the whole way!

Several other Descenders posted impressive times, despite the heat. For example, strava leaderboard for East Grade to Observatory now lists 6 descenders among top 10, and 11 out of top 20.

After South Grade we had a quick lunch at Mothers and went back to cars – I suspect most riders were in survival mode on Mesa Grande as the heat and climbing efforts were taking its toll.

Total for the day was 79 miles with 9,000 ft climbed (TM).

Descender Solo Ride to Palm Springs-Ride Report

Hi Guys,

We planned a family trip to Palm Springs over Memorial Day weekend.  A group of four families rented a large casita filled compound surrounding a pool, just north of downtown Palm Springs.  A golf outing, the water park, hiking/running and shopping were some of the planned events.  I asked when I could ride my bike and Serena suggested I ride there.  Wow–what a great idea.  I had never ridden to Palm Springs but knew Mike Hodges would be a wealth of information and knowledge.  I tired to get Mike or others to join me in the planned ride.  Mike was very good about sharing his riding experiences.  He specifically suggested I start early in the day.  It looked like I would be riding solo.

I packed the car the night before and rose early to prepare for my ride.  The weather looked cold, grey and misty so I opted to wait a bit for it to clear up–it didn’t.  I took off about 8 am with food and water on my back, plenty of clothes and my phone in case I needed car support from Serena when she drove to Palm Springs later in the day.  It was wet, misty and very foggy going up the Poway Grade towards Old Julian Road.  I did see one rider in a Ranchos kit near the top of Old Julian, he was heading back toward Ramona.  The fog thickened and the misty rain increased on my way towards Santa Ysabel.  After 37 miles of wet riding I stopped in the grocery store for a bite to eat and pondered my options.  I called Serena to give her an update and then pedaled north on highway 79 in terrible conditions, now the winds were picking up along with the rain and fog.

Things started to clear a bit at the intersection of S2.  It was windy and a bit warmer heading into Warner Springs.  I was soaked but chugging along.  About mile 60 I rolled past a large snake some 3 feet out into the road.  I stopped and attempted to use my bike to coax the snake back off the road.  One car stopped to take a photo and the snake leaped at my wheels a number of times before he egressed to the edge of the road.  One snake saved from a car tire, at least for a little longer.  The winds howled and the fog thickened again when I stopped for a photo at the Warner Springs sign just north of the small glider port.  I continued on, now almost at the point of now return.  The sun broke through and I increased my pace knowing the intersection of 371 in Aguanga lay shortly ahead.  I took another break at the corner having now completed 72 mile of riding and what I thought was the toughest part of the ride behind me.  Mike said the climb up 371 was not bad so I thought I was ready, I wasn’t.

The climb up 371 sapped me of remaining energy in my legs and I got a few cramps.  I uttered expletives under my weak breath about Mike and tried to look for the top of the hill, it kept going.  After about an hour of suffering I stopped at a market in the Anza Valley in bad need of some nourishment and new legs.  I warmed up and drank my chocolate milk and coke combo.  It was a much needed rest.  The 20 miles across highway 371 were a test for me.  Fortunately the winds that had hit me earlier were now mostly helping push me along my ride.  The last three miles were a beautiful climb into wooded forest and then highway 74 miraculously appeared.  I was 92 miles done and knew that I had a long, mostly downhill approach to Palm Desert ahead of me.  Things were looking up or so I thought.

I really enjoyed the roads through the forest and the descents made for a quick pace.  Traffic had been pretty light all day so no real car issues.  The big problem were the winds.  They kept increasing in speed with gust blowing 30+ mph, maybe higher.  I stopped at a lookout before the steep curvy section of highway 74.  The wind was howling and I was nervous.  I stayed out closer to the middle of the road and stopped numerous times to let cars go by.  I had to go slow as the winds kept blowing me around on the road.  I was a bit scared but had no option, I had to get to the desert floor.  The steep and winding roads dropped me into Palm Desert at about mile 115 of the ride.  I got down to Highway 111 and turned into the wind for the last 18 miles to our place in Palm Springs.

My adventure covered 132.9 miles in 8:29.41.  It took me over 10.5 hours to get there including all the stops.  The only real scary section was the descent on highway 74 due to the winds.  I could envision a Descenders trip to Palm Springs someday as long as we had 1-2 drivers willing to take cars there.  The weekend was a fun family trip with many activities.  I did get in a run and hike with Serena.  I also rode to and then up the the Aerial Tramway on Monday.  It was a short 4 mile climb but any delusions of Tramway Repeats were quickly cleared from my head.  Up and down once and back to the house was enough.

My Garmin is going back to the manufacturer today.  It records the rides but they can not be downloaded.  I did a manual upload into Strava.  I will get a replacement Edge 705 soon.  Attached are a couple of photos from my rides to and around Palm Springs.

Venuto memorial ride

All, today we had a ride in honor of Nick Venuto, who tragically lost his life a year ago in car-bike collision. We had more than 25 descenders and friends of the club meet at Nick Venuto memorial site at 56 bike path. (see photos attached).

Thanks to Voris for coordinating the ride. There were several people I haven’t seen in a while, so it was good to chat.
We rode slowly down to the coast, and I am sure Nick was on everyone’s mind. We turned on La Costa and came back through Rancho Santa Fe.

Host of the ride, Dave Voris offered one piece of commentary:  as we started up the third of Three Witches someone said “This one is for Nick”. That started a furious group pace led by John Bittinger who held off the group to the light.  He looked back once at the top and said – “For Nick”.

You should have come,
Oleg.

Descenders,

The TOC was a success – well done Oleg, Ernst, and the CCSD team.  You raised the bar!

Next up is our annual Monster Climb trip June 22-24. It’s all new terrain for us this year on the west side of the Sierras, but no change in the opportunities to suffer and triumph.

This trip is now fully enrolled (19 members), and we are accumulating a waiting list in case there are cancellations.

The “brochure” is attached. It provides all required details as well as links to Mapmyride.  Oleg will post this on the web site on the “Ride Schedule” page.  Please print and thoroughly read the brochure and maps/profiles.  I am not good at answering questions when I am hypoxic!

A special thanks to Dave Guidotti for coordinating/planning the hotel reservations, restaurants, caravan, money and many other logistics.    We may be reaching out to some of you individually for some specific tasks such as ice chests, water etc.  If we left anything out of the brochure please let either me or Guido know.

5 weeks and counting!

Descenders Tour Of California Stage 7 Trip: Mt. Baldy-Ride Report

Hi All,

Stage 7 of the Tour of California finished in dramatic fashion with Robert Gesink attacking on the final climb up Mt Baldy.  Two riders, Chris Horner and the Columbian rider, Atapuma, were the race leaders for much of the day.  The initial breakaway was led by Jens Voigt and riders from Radio Shack.   Coming up the final climb from Baldy Village, Horner and Atapuma still had a 1:33 led over the peloton.  Atapuma attacked and got slightly away from Horner.  Gesink got to the front of the group and attacked up the final five kilometers.  He passed Horner and then passed Atapuma at top of climb, just before the switchbacks.  They both fought to the finish with Gesink winning the stage and taking the Yellow jersey from Zabriskie.  The Descenders were there for the epic ride, the great race and were watching 200 meters from the finish to watch Gesink take the stage victory and ultimately the Tour of California win.

The group event started at Casa Voris where we all gathered for the drive to Glendale.  We handed out the new Descenders jersey to Bernie Bogard for making such a speedy recovery from his fall on Couser Canyon.  He destroyed his jersey on the fall, not to mention his shoulder, finger and all the road rash.  Bernie is back and as strong as ever.  He will look good in his new team jersey.  Dave Ernst and Dave Sheehan presented Rick with his award and framed photo of his great record ride up the south grade of Palomar Mountain; the first Strava confirmed climb of under one hour.  Great riding Rick.  A few of the boys who could not go to the Mt Baldy ride stopped by on their way to the local group ride.  Guido, Sheehan and Farkas headed off to Mussey and Pamo while the rest of us drove to Glendale.

The large group started together and climbed Glendora Mountain Road up to the intersection of Glendora Ridge Road.  We had over 20 Descenders riding and many friends/guests from all over the San Diego area.  We even had a visitor from Wisconsin who knew something about climbing on bikes.  AJ is a great rider and apparently a great runner too.  We had most of the group together for the 12 mile climb, it was a beautiful start to the day.  Most all descended to the bottom of Cattle Canyon.  I was the first to turn back up for the 5 mile climb, along with Bob P.  We saw Hodges still descending as he had to fix a flat at the top.  We saw John M descending.  Many of the guys went even farther down toward the bridge, I needed all the lead time I could get.  Bob P rode away from me.  Many of the other Descenders passed me as I climbed.  Hodges burned a few matches by closing his gap and passing me right at the top.  We rode together for many miles along Glendora Ridge climbing to the lunch break at the CCSD van.  Matt Baab came along and breezed by us.  Mike Hodges finally left me and he pedaled towards the top.  I was finally passed by Oleg and Voris.  I tired to close the gap and kept them in sight until we got to the top of GRR.  The fans were thick on both sides and you had to walk your bike to get through the crowds.  We coasted down to the CCSD Volkswagen where many Descenders gathered for a great feast.  Many, many thanks to Jo and Rob for all their work in preparing for the needed food and drink.  The food was great and the water a savior as the day had become warm.  After a relaxing lunch we saw the lead breakaway group led by Chris Horner climbing up GRR on their way to head down some of the roads we had climbed earlier.  The race went down cattle canyon and then looped around to climb up the GMR route from our morning start.

Descenders headed out toward Baldy Village and the 4 mile ascent that loomed ahead.  The group was spread out all along the road.  There were hundreds of other riders out, all hoping to reach the top of Mt Baldy before the race came through.  The heat was rising and the road became steeper, a difficult combination.  I climbed alone in my thoughts of how beautiful and painful the climb was.  I tried to keep a pace about 5 mph and noted a number of 6-7 mph surges.  My overall speed was slow but I made progress.  I plowed through all my fluids, despite the water I drank back at the CCSD van.  I was in need of more water–soon.  The final kilometer signs clicked off.  I opted not to take the bracelet and get the push up by the roadside group.  I loved all the folks sitting along the side of the road, drinking beer, saying comments like “Almost there or keep it up.”  Why were they not riding too?  I finally made it to the top and found many Descenders near the finish line.  We all decide to place our bike on a light pole near the final switchback, only 200 meters from the finish line.  We relaxed in the sun and watched the race on the jumbo tron screen.  It was an exciting finish.

The descent down was almost as crazy as last year.  We had to walk for a bit and then slowly descend until getting past the marketing tents.  We rode alongside a few of the pros heading back to the team buses in the village.  Once we got back to Glendora Ridge Road the crowds thinned out dramatically.  The CCSD van was again a welcome sight.  We all filled our water bottles again and then rode the 20+ miles back to the bottom.  It was not all downhill but it was a great ride along the mostly deserted ribbon snaking along the ridge of the mountain.  We split into several groups based on descending skills but we all regrouped at the bottom and rode back to the cars.  The ride was about 65 miles and over 8,500 of climbing.  Many thanks to Oleg and Ernst for all the organizing.  Many thanks again to Jo and Rob for the CCSD hospitality.  We had a great turn out.  The Descenders rode well.  Attached are a few photos.  I will send a few more e-mails with more photos and then load the rest into the shutter fly account.

Descenders Ride Report for Alpine and El Capitan-Sat, 12 May

Hi All,

It was a beautiful day to be out on the roads yesterday.  We had another large group turn out for the Descenders ride to Alpine and El Capitan.  The group start photo included a new rider–Frankie.  He has ridden a couple of times with the group and is an excellent rider.  Bernie B was there as well but just missed the photo, we had a dozen riders start the ride.  We knew it was going to be sunny and warm once we hit 67.  The climb up SPP was at a good pace but not too fast, we only lost Hodges who was feeling to effects of all his European travels.  As usual, Mike got stronger as the ride progressed.  We all flew down Hwy 67 toward Lakeside with speeds right at 50 mph. Along Moreno we regrouped and cruised over towards Lakeside.  The sun shined brightly and warmed us as we sped along Old Hwy 80 towards Harbison Canyon.  I knew I needed to save my legs so I opted to cut off the canyon climb and headed up South Grade with Geoff B in tow.  South Grade climbs into Alpine and then we descended from the top off of Tavern and part way down the Dehesa Climb.

I relaxed in the sun and watched Rick come flying up the Dehesa Grade.  He finished a Strava segment of 2.8 miles that was about 1,400 feet of climbing in 2nd place overall with a time of 10:37.  The guy in first place is Neil Shirley, 27 seconds faster than Rick.  Great riding by Rick.  Who is this guy Neil S?  A few minutes later Chad and Bob R stormed past on the climb, closely followed by Voris.  I got on my bike and started to climb back up to Tavern.  Frankie, Guido and Jeff S were close behind with the rest of the guys just a bit farther back.  We all regrouped at the store in Alpine for water.  Hodges was desperate for his drink mix and he scooped up fallen portions of it off the cement in front of the water machine.  He was riding strong despite the travel and it was getting warmer.  We still had a long ride back home.

The group flew down Old Hwy 80 toward Lake Jennings and then over to El Monte Road and the ride out to El Capitan Reservoir.  At the turn Jeff C, Geoff and Voris kept riding to return up 67 towards home.  The remaining nine riders turned towards El Capitan.  I would regret that decision.  Hodges predicted the pace would quicken with Rick and Bob R in the pace line.  I held onto the back for about five miles and then blew up, stopping at El Monte park two miles short of the reservoir.  I rested for a minute and then began the lonely ride back.  The winds were blowing from the north and west so I faced a headwind most of the way.  I expected the group to catch me before the climb up Hwy 67 so I motored along alone.  The climb up 67 was brutal.  My pace slowed to a crawl while I baked in the almost noontime sunshine.  I glanced over my shoulder waiting for a group to come flying by but only saw heat waves as I looked back down the road.  I safely made it to the top and pulled over to wait on the corner of SPP.  Just then two riders took the turn having come south on 67.  I decided to grarb a wheel and keep heading towards home.

The three of us flew down SPP and rode over to Mercy Road.  I left them behind as I climbed with one last effort to get back home.  I was out of water, GU and energy but only had two miles left to ride.  I finished my bike ride with just over 77 miles and over 5,000 feet of climbing.  Unfortunately my Garmin download process did not work so I manually entered in my ride, missing out on what I assume were several KOM trophies from some of my acceleration efforts throughout the ride-not!.  It was a great day out riding and there were some great segment efforts by many of the guys; check out Strava.  It was also good training for the ToC ride planned up Mt Baldy next weekend.  See you there!

Alpine Challenge Ride Report

Hi All,

Descenders were riding all over the county and southern CA yesterday.  We had a good turnout for the Alpine Challenge with a dozen riders wearing Descenders jerseys.  This is the 7th year we have had a group out for this exciting ride in the mountains of east county.  We all rendezvoused at Summers Past Farms about 7 am in a bright sunny morning with great riding temperatures.  Most of the "Team A" riders were missing so we planned a less competitive group ride, hoping most would hang together.  Things started well as we pedaled over to Harbison Canyon and the fun descent down.  Cresap was on point for the fast descent as the speed broke us up a bit.  We lost Denise and Amy on the final parts of the descent but still had a large group start the Dehesa Road climb.  I could tell Neil wanted to go faster so I reviewed the route with him, noting that getting lost is almost impossible.  A few miles into the climb, Neil took off and quickly disappeared off the front.  The remaining group of 8 riders–Jeff S, Eileen, Len the Elder, Jeff C, Mike, Bryan, Bernie and me cruised up past the Tavern Road return route and kept climbing towards I-8.  It was great to see Bernie out riding again, he made a fast recovery from his shoulder injury on the Couser Canyon fall.  He looked like the same strong Bernie of old.  The group passed many riders on our way up and kept a steady pace to the top.  Len the Elder was on fire as he pulled to the front for much of the climb.

Neil blitzed the 17 mile climb in 1:09, top 4 of Strava entries.  The rest of us hit the top in 1:22, with Hodges a second faster than Bryan based on the ever important Strava rankings.  We passed Barb and a group of her riders just as we went under the freeway.  She excitedly described the Descenders riding club from her ride with us to Oceanside last week to her other riders as we cruised towards Old Hwy 80.  Just before the SAG Stop as I was on point with Barb, I heard someone yell "flat".  Apparently Hodges got a flat but I was too distracted in front to stop.  Bernie and Len stopped to fix the tire with Mike.  Bryan , Eileen and Jeff S stopped at the SAG while I kept pedaling with Barb towards Guatay.  We climbed in a small group with the energetic and infectious enthusiasm of Barb reflected in all the hoots and hollering she gave when we passed other riders.  I was pushing to keep up with her while it looked like a "walk in the park" for Barb.  At the top of the climb in little Guatay I said good-bye and sped off on the descent for Pine Valley.

I made quick work of the mile plus descent down towards the lollypop loop of Pine Valley.  I spotted Neil, now one of the lead riders in the race, starting his climb back up.  He was now 4 miles ahead of me and motoring fast.  I assumed the group was back out riding and closing the gap quickly.  I sped along trying to keep the small breakaway for as long as possible.  Just before the turn in Pine Valley to loop back I was passed by a flying Drew Peterson with his usual camelbak water source on his back as he effortlessly cruised at 25 mph speeds.  Drew finished the ride in 2:57; I never saw him again as he motored out of sight.  I sped through the neighborhoods and back to the climb out of Pine Valley.  The main group of Descenders had already passed but I did see John Moran on his descent.  The climb up hurt as I was still riding solo and the winds picked up a bit.  I needed some nourishment so I did a quick stop at the SAG and grabbed half a banana and two fig newtons.  There had been a guy on my wheel on the climb from Pine Valley that took the turn to Descanso ahead of me so I tried in vain to go catch him.  There were only a few riders on the road and I rode mostly alone back to the freeway where the first of the leg cramps started to hit me.  I was only at mile 42 so I knew I had to back off my pounding of the pedals a bit to find a way out of the leg pains.

The descent back down Japatul Valley Road was fast but I knew my speed was dropping.  I tried to push my pace as I passed a number of riders returning on the 50 mile route.  The legs were not willing no matter what I tried to do.  The cramps caused me to slow again as I took the turn onto Tavern Road and slowly make my way towards Alpine.  Thankfully I was passed by Mike, Len and Bernie on the climb.  I pulled back up to them and hung on as we rode along Arnold Way and the final 6 miles of the ride.  The four of us finished together in 3:45, well behind Drew and the pace of Neil who finished in 3:20 despite having to fix his own flat tire.  We covered about 100 km with almost 5,800 feet of elevation gain; another great Alpine Challenge ride.

We relaxed at the tables enjoying our lunch of pasta and burgers as the rest of the Descenders finished up their ride.  The last stop was to the beer tent area for a cold beer, salted nuts and a few more riding stories before we all headed out for home.  Attached are a few photos from the ride.  Look forward to the ride again next year.

Descenders Ride Report for Saturday, 28 April

Hi All,

Great turnout yesterday for the reverse Oceanside Harbor Loop ride.  I arrived a bit early at the start and there were already 15 riders ready to go.  Matt Babb brought up David and Roman from the south bay riding group.  Matt Davis was back on his bike.  John and Len the elder  were in the group.  Chad was in great form, good to see him in a Descenders kit again.  A number of the regular suspects were also there–Guido, Ernst, Voris, Bob R, Dan S and Geoff. Bob R invited also his buddy, Jeffrey.  I was wearing the jersey provided to the Descenders by Gustaf Olafsson, our latest international visitor.  I felt a bit out of uniform but really like the jersey.  We all headed off towards Camino Del Sur, going north towards Santaluz.  Matt Davis was on point and driving the pace to Fairbanks Ranch.  We wisely opted to skip the inside loop of Santaluz and head down San Dieguito Road.  We spotted Eileen, Jeff and Barb on El Apajo as we rolled towards RSF.  The pace quickened up the hill to Stud Loop.

In an act of self preservation, I suggested I take the "slower" portion of the group towards Lago Lindo while the rest of the fast group tackle Stud Loop.  Left alone at the corner with everyone going on Stud Loop, I was forced to push my heart rate to try to keep up.  We regrouped along Lago Lindo and then accelerated again down Camino Del Notre.  At the back of the peloton, Ernst and Eileen were avoiding the dog that run just in front of their bike.  At the 30 plus mph we were going it would have been an ugly collision.  No damage done and we all pedaled towards La Costa where the group rode fast in another acceleration towards PCH.

We lost a few of the gang along the way due to other time commitments.  Jeff Southern was running the La Jolla Half on Sunday so he was just warming up his legs.  Oleg had to head south for home and Matt Davis split off for home.  We still had over a dozen riders but the pace along PCH blew up the group.  Matt, Guido, Chad, Voris, Ernst, Bob R, Geoff, Barb and a few others hammered north.  I desperately tried to hang onto the back wheel of someone, anyone..trying to make it to Oceanside.  We flew through Carlsbad Village and kept a good group up to the harbor.  I was searching out for my opportunity to again breakaway for the harbor finish.  I spotted some pedestrians and planned to go behind them as they crossed the path.  Unfortunately, the mother hit the panic button and back up to the curb.  I was committed and rolled forward.  The head winds kept me from getting any gap.  Chad closed quickly followed by Matt B.  Matt pulled a few guys towards the end with Voris doing the best job of drafting and then exploding towards the front.  He could not catch Matt in the end as he hit the top speed to the turn around, followed closely by Voris.

We regrouped at the bathroom and I noted a need to get home–LAX game and track meet on my family schedule.  The grouped rolled through Oceanside and I found myself on the back wheel of two tri-bike guys.  We kept up a good pace through Carlsbad and I was alone when they turned inland.  I knew the big group was behind me somewhere but I just kept turning over while enjoying the beautiful ocean to my left.  We saw tons of riders and runners out all day, busy day on the coast.  Just south of Leucadia, a fast moving group blew by me.  Fortunately they slowed riding into Encinitas with its festival day.  We rode around downtown and past Swami’s.  I looked to the rider on my left and thought  it was Matt B in a different jersey, he even had the mirror on his glasses.  It turned out to be Matt’s twin brother, Chris, who picked up the group on the ride south from Oceanside.  We rode as a group south on PCH.  The kook surfer statue was dressed again.  The pace into Solana Beach did not slow and the group was going left on Loma Santa Fe.  I knew I had a tight schedule back and should have just gone straight to the 56 bike path, but I decided to go with the guys.  I blew up on the second rise of Loma Santa Fe and watched the remaining group of guys pedal away from me.  I tried in vain to close the gap into RSF with no success.  I thought the group would have dropped down the hill on Calzada Del Bosque back towards El Apajo and the three witches climb.  As I neared the light and saw no one on the long straight road ahead, I realized they must have gone all the way into RSF.

I was tired and out of water so I pedaled to the store at Fairbanks Ranch on the corner of San Dieguito Road.  While getting some much needed water I saw Ernst pedal by the store and turn up Three Witches.  I then attempted to get on my bike to catch him and never got close enough to have him hear me yelling from behind.  He turned north on Camino Del Sur and I went south for the final leg of my ride.  I met my goal and got to my house at 11:55 am, in time to change and get to the LAX game.  I did see John Moran riding west on the 56 bike path about 12:20 as I drove to see my daughter’s LAX game.  John rode with Geoff and had a beer at his house before going back down Black Mountain.  I finished with about 66 miles and 3,200 feet of climbing, fast day on the bike and loads of fun.

Attached are a few photos from the ride.

I recovered well enough to do a run around Lake Miramar with Bob Proulx on Sunday am.  We also got out for a short 25 mile ride in the afternoon.  I stumbled upon Mike Hodges and Geoff B, out riding in their Descenders kits with their families.  They had seen Jeff Cresap on PCH so it looks like lots of guys are getting in the miles.

Descenders Ride for Saturday, 4/28

We had more than a dozen descenders and a few new friends of the club
joining us for a coastal ride this morning. The pace was steady fast
from the start, with a few sharp attacks here and there. Since I rode
from home to the start and needed to get back before 10:30, I had to
turn back towards home once we hit the coast, so I missed the
Oceanside part.
Photos are attached.
You should have come.
