Pedal the Cause Ride Report-19 and 20 September 2015

Hi All,

The Descenders had a strong presence at the Pedal the Cause ride last month. We started on Saturday morning at UCSD with 7 Descenders riding for a great cause. We were riding for Tony O’Gorman, who has been a real trooper battling his prostate cancer and riding us into the ground through all his chemo treatments. Our group included: Dave Sheehan,Tony O’ Gorman, Bryan Jones, Eric Gruff, Peter Psahoulias, Jeff Langley and Rob Verfurth. We were joined by Steve Bosowski later in the ride. Team Descenders raised more than $15,000 towards cancer research in the San Diego area. The mass group start rolled from the campus parking lot in a "controlled" pace to Genesee Road, over I-5 and up the hill to Torrey Pines Road. Sheehan was already picking up the pace and most of our group was at or near the front of the riders. We hammered down Torrey Pines, by the water treatment plant and looped back around to get to El Camino Real. By the time we crossed Del Mar Heights, the Descenders lead group included Sheehan, Bryan, Tony, Jeff and me. Simon Planken was there, resplendent in his new UC Cyclery kit. He certainly has quickly figured out how to switch from MTB to road bikes and can ride super fast, all day long. Everyone pushed hard by the polo fields on San Dieguito Road to get us to Apajo.

I looked up from about 20 riders back to see Sheehan on point hammering on the Apajo Road curve. It was a beautiful sight to see with a handful of Descenders in the lead group and Sheehan out front. By the time we got to Del Dios things spread out a bit. Those who rode last year recognized a tall, lean young rider who was on point most of the ride last year too. He is a PhD named Ryon Graf who works at a local biotech, Epic Sciences. Such a same to have so little natural talents. Ryon smoked everyone again this year as he pedaled off into the distance by the time we hit Del Dios. We rode past Lake Hodges and through Escondido. The group seemed to stay about the same size with a couple of super fast guys going off the front. We all finally got the the Sag stop at the top of Jesmond Dene Road. The group stopped for drinks before riding up Old Highway 395, past the Lawrence Welk Resort. The ride continued north all the way to Temecula. Bryan Jones suggested we get off the straight road and loop around to Couser Canyon.

At Circle R, Tony, Sheehan, Bryan and Rob turned right and started to climb. We hit West Lilac and Lilac, past the Yellow Deli and turned up Couser Canyon. I hit the accelerator to get out front and decided to keep going. The descent was fluid with the curvy roads and no traffic. I looked behind every so often and did not see the other guys, so I kept riding. I came to Highway 76, turned left and then right onto Rice Canyon Road. It was getting hot and I expected to get caught as I slowly climbed up the road. It was a beautiful day and a great road to climb into Rainbow. I crested Rice Canyon and made it to the Sag stop at the elementary school. No sign of the guys. This was a great Sag with a portable pizza oven and lots of drinks. I went through a full pepperoni pizza and three cokes before the guys finally arrived. Tony had flatted. We all rested and regrouped for the last segment of the ride into Temecula.

After a nice descent down into Temecula we looped around through an area called Red Hawk. We connected back up with Peter and Steve. We had a nice group of Descenders cruising along the roads. The temperatures were getting warmer and we stopped in the shade to regroup and then hit our last Sag Stop with only about 8 miles still to go. Tony met his new girlfriend at this stop. He has made her an honorary Descender. The final miles were full of rollers out by the vineyards as we neared our destination at Tucalota Creek Ranch. The final hill really took it out of our tired legs but we all rolled into "Tent City". Those of us that took the Couser Canyon detour had ridden 80 miles and almost 7,000 feet of elevation gain, nice day on a bike.

We found our tent and luggage prepositioned for us. I made a bee-line for one of the portable showers to get cleaned and cool off. It was only about 1 pm so we had all afternoon to relax as the rest of the riders finished their ride. The lunch was on the far side of the site, decent eats, and some nice shade and a band playing. I sat in a relaxing Adirondack chair in the shade and read a book while the slight breezes kept me nice and cool. All the boys showed up eventually and the crowds grew. It was becoming a large happy hour. Simon P had some Pfizer friends from Boston that joined us for the ride. Tony and his wife were smart enough to bring a case of ice cold beer. There was a shortage of decent beer due to some snafu but we were saved by Tony from Boston. Sheehan and I put some of our Midwest roots on display with a fun Cornhole match. Despite back to back swishes by yours truly, Sheehan and his teammate beat us soundly. We all relaxed in the shade until it was time for dinner.

The whole group of riders, some 800 plus, along with all the organizers had a nice banquet dinner. There were many stories of cancer survivors and groups riding in the memory of others. The dinner nicely summarized why we were participating in the weekend event. After dinner it was off to bed for me. Tent city is never a great night’s sleep. It was a bit warm and the snoring thunderous. Everyone rose early to get some breakfast and prepare for the ride back to San Diego. Team Descenders lined up for the 7 am roll-out. Sheehan immediately hit the accelerator another Hogwash ride. Our group took off with the lead pack and we did our fair share of pulling as we made our way back through Temecula. Just before the climb up to Rainbow, Sheehan flatted. Tony stopped to help and the rest of us kept rolling along. Bryan and I got to the elementary school Sag stop with the leaders but we stopped to wait. We saw Simon roll by a few minute later. Sheehan and Tony arrived and we took off again. Jeff Langley was with us too. We flew to the Lilac Bridge and descended down West Lilac, heading west toward Oceanside. The route changed a bit from last year and we rode along Highway 76 for a bit to get to the Sag stop near the bike path on the San Luis River Trail. It was so early, the pizza truck was just getting set up; no pizza today.

We flew along the bike path, hit Oceanside just below the harbor and headed south. The pace was much faster than the climbing of Saturday. By the time we got to Solana Beach we were still averaging 20 mph. We made a brief Sag stop for drinks and had one final push through Del Mar and up Torrey Pines. We rolled into the UCSD parking lot by about 11 am, 75 miles and less than 3,000 feet of elevation. It was a breeze compared to the Saturday slog. We all changed and then had some good BBQ lunch provided before heading for home. It was a great two days of riding. The Descenders were strongly represented in riders and in donations for a great cause. Keep fighting Tony O. Look forward to seeing more riders next year. The link shows some of the photos from the weekend.

Ride Report Updates–Kitchen Creek and Del Mar Rides

Hi All,

Below are a couple of short ride reports for recent group rides. The photo links are below each ride report.

Labor Day Ride-Kitchen Creek-7 September 2015

Tony proposed we go ride Kitchen Creek for Labor Day. Seemed like a lot of work to me for a day off work, but I love that climb; I was in. We met at Casa Voris where Dave was out front hawking his undersized Rudy helmets. He opted not to join us for the ride. There were 8 riders so we piled into two cars and drove out to the store off Highway 79 to begin our ride. Waiting for us were Neil and Justin. That gave us a total of ten riders to start the ride: Len, Marci, Jeff L, Tony, Sheehan, Hodges, Richard and me, along with Neil & Justin. We headed to Guatay along Old Highway 80, descending into Pine Valley. As we neared the bottom, we saw a Descenders kit climbing up towards us. It was Chad Markham, who now lives in Pine Valley. Great to see Chad again. He was riding strong as usual. We climbed up toward S1 where Jeff L turned up. Jeff was riding to Julian to see his daughter play in a concert.

The rest of us went over I-8 and headed east on S1 toward Kitchen Creek. By this time I was already separated from the group. They sped off while I fell farther and farther behind. It was a beautiful morning so I enjoyed the views while my legs suffered. The group hit Kitchen Creek well in front of me. I climbed up slowly and saw a few bikes on the higher switchbacks as I made my way past the first gate. Tony sent out his ride from early this year to show our route. He was in the middle of his chemo and did the Kitchen Creek segment in about 1:30. I barely beat that time when I got the the top, hit S1 and rode toward the Mt Laguna store. Everyone was waiting for me.

I got some water, Chad headed back down S1 to home and we rolled out to go around Lake Cuyamaca. Sheehan and Marci pulled me along for many miles until Sheehan stopped for a restroom break at the first campsite as we headed back down Highway 79. I sped off, chasing the other guys well out in front. A fast descent provided a nice finish to a tough and fun loop–57 miles and over a mile of climbing. Great way to spend the day off work.

Recovery Ride-Del Mar, Solana Beach, RSF Loop-13 September 2015

The planned Sunday ride was hosted by Mike Hodges. At the start it was just me, Mike, Tony & Mike Farkas. He led us on his fun coastal cruise. We headed west on the 56 bike path and met up with Marci near Carmel Valley Road, on our way towards Del Mar. We climbed Portofino and Mango, looped our way back towards Del Mar Fairgrounds and then up Nardo in Solana Beach. We made quick stop at Java Depot before heading on Lomas Sante Fe to RSF. Mike Farkas led us on a few side roads back toward the center of town. On one steep descent we came to a left turn. I was in the very back and watched the action unfold. Brakes squealed, rear tires shifted and Tony hit some gravel with his front wheel. This caused him to go down on his left shoulder, elbow and side. He envoked Rule 5, got up and got back on his bike. We had to do some brake cover adjustments and water first-aid to remove some of the blood and gravel from his left elbow. His Descenders jersey was a bit of a mess, but he rode on.

We made it to Artesian and climbed up to CDS. Check out the photo of Tony on the climb, his jersey shows the damage from the fall. Tony and I went left at the end of Artesian Road since I planned to stop at my buddy’s house in Del Sur while Hodges, Farkas and Marci went south towards home. I waved good-bye to Tony, he was still riding well despite the fall. I swung through 4S on my way home. A nice 40 mile recovery ride with one bounce off the road. Tony will be ready for the Pedal the Cause event, rule #5.

Alpine Loop Ride Report

Hi Guys,

It was a group ride to Alpine today, but I did almost all of it solo. I was late to meet the guys so pedaled solo over to Casa Voris. We had a large group of riders there and more when we all convened at the 7-11 store. Lots of the usual suspects were there. We had one new rider, Deke, who joined us today, he was very strong throughout the ride. Oleg came back to ride with us for the first time in a number of weeks. 15 riders set out for Alpine, including Rick B on his EliptiGO. I was soon at the back of the group on the climb up SPP. I rode solo down 67 where we regrouped in Lakeside. Bob P turned around just past El Capitan HS. I managed to hang with the guys to Lake Jennings where we picked up Neil R and then changed our route before we got to Old Highway 80. Rick B suggested we loop around Quail Canyon. Todd C turned back at this point. Len TE had a tire problem so I decided to get ahead knowing the group would catch me soon.

Quail Canyon was a nice wide, smooth road that rose through great neighborhoods parallel to I-8, heading west. I finally descended down Hawley Road and went by Summers Past Farms, the start of the Alpine Ride we do each year. I kept looking back and saw none of the guys so I continued on solo to Harbison Canyon. I descended solo and started my climb back up Dehesa. I had just ridden past the Barona Casino entrance when a bunch of the guys blew by me–Neil, Larry, Rick W, Voris, Tony, Deke and Jim W. Jim was having shifter issues with has rear cassette so he was muscling it up the climb. I was again quickly alone and pedaled solo to the top. I stopped just before Tavern Road to stretch when Larry came back down the road. He and Rick W had waited for me at the top. I pedaled on but was again alone and rode solo to the CVS store where all the guys were getting drinks. Oleg & Len had ridden up South Grade, they were still trying to fix his tire. Geoff B, Guido and Rick B turned back after the descent on Hawley Road. We still had about 10 guys left. Len & Jim decided to pedal over to a bike shop to get some repair work done.

We all rolled out on the return leg back toward home. I was again alone by the time we went by the top of Harbison Canyon. I pedaled along Old Hwy 80 and came upon Deke who was fixing his tire. Larry, Voris and Tony were helping. I kept riding and passed Oleg & Neil who were waiting a bit farther up the road. I knew I would get passed soon so I kept up my solo adventure. All the guys came by me as we got to El Monte Road. We all rode together into Lakeside where Neil, Oleg & Larry headed for 52 west, while Voris, Tony, Deke and I rode to 67. I was quickly by myself again and started to look for the Astana Nibali car to help me get back up the the guys. Nothing came and my legs were toast. I pootled up 67, stopping twice to stretch my back and legs. At the second stop, Jim and Len came up the road and kept going. I was left to ride solo up to SPP and back to PQ. I made another stop for water at the Subway and did not get home until almost 2 pm. My Garmin captured the ride, but it did not upload into Strava. I did a manual entry of 77 miles and almost 6,000 of climbing. I am cooked and will rest tomorrow. Below is a link for a few photos from the Alpine Ride today.

https://plus.google.com/photos/117626389252909371681/albums/6191196235501164497

Bob P says he is riding Sunday so look for him at the start of the recovery ride. A number of folks want to do a Kitchen Creek ride on Monday. We will meet at Casa Voris at 7 am and plan to drive to the store just off Highway 79 north of I-8. I will give more ride details tomorrow.

Ride Report Round-Up

Hi Guys,

I was starting a ride report summary e-mail yesterday when I read an Instagram post from Eileen about the crash of Jeff. She sent out an email today to the group. Terrible news and hope he recovers quickly. Stay safe out there on the bikes. My ride reports seem totally out of place given the news of the crash. I had already posted my photos from the rides in the draft e-mail, so I will share them with you now anyway.

We have a planned group ride on Sat–Mussey & Pamo. I will write up a full report after safe completion of that ride.

Mussey & Pamo Ride Report and Descenders Sunday Recovery Ride

Hi All,

Mussey & Pamo dished out plenty of punishment today. We had 10 riders at the start, Jeff L, Richard, John M, Jim W, Tony O, Eric R, Rick B, Hermann, Todd and me; and quickly picked up Bernie, Larry and Steve K as we started our climb of SPP. We regrouped at 67 and sped towards Mussey. I was quickly dropped and swept my way past Mt Woodson. One of our new riders, Richard McKay, blew his tire and most of the guys stopped to help. I rolled past and picked up John & Hermann to go to Mussey. Jim W was there waiting as he had been out front when the flat hit.

We all rode to the bottom of Mussey and I tried to get them going before the train arrived, no luck. All the guys showed and we rode quickly back to the top. Jeff L and Hermann headed back toward home while the rest of us hit Dye Road toward downtown Ramona. Lisa Rehberg and riding pal had a flat on Dye so Eric R and some of the guys stopped to help. We regrouped at the gas station, got water, fixed more flats and finally rode to Pamo. I turned at the bridge, after running into the barb wire fence trying to take some photos, just a flesh wound. I returned to the top to take photos while everyone charged up from the valley floor.

I planned to descend Ramona Grade. Steve K joined me while the rest of the group went back into Ramona. Steve pulled the first mile or so before I finally felt guilty enough to take a turn. I pulled for a mile and then looked back…no Steve. I slow pedaled…no Steve. I was tired and out of water so I rolled into San Pasqual school to try to find some water. No water and no Steve. I was too tired to go find him so I pootled on up Bandy and down HVR, finally stopping at the RB Community park across the highway. I refilled with water and headed back out by the baseball fields to West Bernardo Drive. The riding Gods must have been mad at me for abandoning Steve K. I turned right from the last driveway but failed to notice all the soft gravel. My front wheel gave out and I fell on my right side, sliding on my right hip and both gloves. Not much damage really, just some to the riding shoes, pedal and right hip with a few more scratches on the right shin. My hip is swollen, scraped and a bit of a mess. I slowly made my way home and then did a fly-by to see that Steve K and everyone else made it home safely.

I was planning on starting my rest for Hood to Coast after the Sunday ride. Guess I will start it now. I know Tony & Sheehan are riding tomorrow. Any one else want to join? Ride info is below.

Ride Reports and musings from an erstwhile Roadbike Warrior

Hi Guys,

I have been a bit negligent in writing up a number of Descender group ride reports over the past month. I can use the excuse of my new job that requires me to actually work most every day as a good excuse. This is also the reason I have now settled into the lower echelon of the Descenders group riding pace. I can only get in a ride on the weekends and Skive rides are a fond memory. My excuses of missing local ride reports must pale in comparison to Mike Hodges. He has yet to write up anything from his adventures during the Tour of France. Yes, he has teased us a bit with some Instagram photos but no reports of all the riding in France. He has learned to forward a simple Skratch e-mail, maybe a ride report is coming. Bernie has at least written a nice summary of the Death Ride he and Rick accomplished, I am hoping Mike will step up as well. I will try to summarize a number of recent rides with an economy of verbiage and some photos to tell the rest of the story.

Crestwind, Questhaven & Via Ambiente Loop-12 July

https://plus.google.com/photos/117626389252909371681/albums/6178820765320233953

This was scheduled for a Sunday Recovery Ride after our Alpine Loop the previous day. Geoff Barrell was the only other rider to show at the Pomerado & RB Roads meeting location. I was still feeling the effects of Alpine but decided to give Geoff a tour of one of our Skive Ride routes. We rode the back roads to Harmony Grove and turned up towards Crestwind. Geoff climbed well ahead of me and waited for me at the top. We rode up even higher and descended down Questhaven, both the road and dirt sections to get back to Harmony Grove Road. We took the right turn onto Via Ambiente and climbed up into the El Cielo neighborhood. After a fast descent to Del Dios we finished the ride by climbing up Artesian and back to home. Geoff added some beach mileage while I limped home with 48 miles and 4,700 feet of climbing.

Five Faces of Soledad-25 July

https://plus.google.com/photos/117626389252909371681/albums/6178822364911067377

Oleg planned another leg beater for us as we motored over to climb Torrey Pines, descend and climb Blacks Beach and then ride over to start the various ascents up Mount Soledad. Pete Wood has been in country visiting for a few weeks. He joined us on a number of rides. We started with the usual Via Capri climb followed by Country Club and then Nautilus. We grouped and regrouped at the cross after most of the climbs. I was falling farther and farther behind the group and lost them on the third climb. I descended back to La Jolla Shores, climbed Mina de Oro and returned back down Torrey Pines to the bike path. I only got in 51 miles but it included 4,500 of Soledad climbing.

Carmel Country, Santaluz & 4S Loop-26 July

https://plus.google.com/photos/117626389252909371681/albums/6178823435324639681

This Sunday Recovery Ride was only attended by Todd and Bob P. Todd is on his REI sabbatical so he has time to ride some weekends. He and Bob rode strong and hard, while patiently waiting for me to regroup on a number of occasions. We took the bike path toward the coast and turned up Carmel Country, looping back to El Camino Real and then over to Carmel Valley Road to get Bob back to Santaluz. He had to get ready for another week of work in Albuquerque so we left him just after the south gate entrance. I took Todd on his first tour of Santaluz. He hit the hill hard up toward the top of Run of the Knolls. I told him there was a segment here. We used to ride into Santaluz on our Descender group rides last year but have not gone there of late. Todd now sits in the top 10 of the segment on Strava. We headed out the north gate towards Del Sur where I swung by my buddy, Witt’s, house. Todd took off to tackle Ralphs Ranch Road and the waterpower segment I told him about. Todd is a super strong climber. I looped home through 4S–36 miles and 2,400 feet of elevation.

Reverse Wohlford-1 August

https://plus.google.com/photos/117626389252909371681/albums/6178826012926246257

We had about 18 Descender riders out for a warm group ride up to Couser Canyon. Pete Wood was again able to join us on the ride. This was a reverse Lake Wohlford loop so we headed up Mary Lane, along Citrus and over to Jesmond Dene. Along Old 395 I got caught taking some photos and the group rolled away from me. I played chase to Camino Del Rey and could not close the gap. Garet had a flat as I took the turn but he said he was good, so I pressed on to try to get back to the group. At the turn to West Lilac I began the climb up solo. Larry had a flat a mile into the climb and was being aided by Oleg & Bernie. They asked me about Rick B and Ernst. I did not see them but later learned they looped back to Gopher Canyon, looking for a shorter route. Larry, Oleg and Bernie blew by me with about 2 miles to go in the climb. I hung onto their wheel for a few rotations before falling back. The group was waiting to me at the Lilac Bridge. We all descended toward Highway 76 and the Circle K store for some needed refreshments. We rolled out to climb Couser Canyon. I was quickly off the back and found the group waiting for me at the top. I descended first toward Lilac, was again the lantern rouge before passing Sheehan. We all rode up into Valley Center where I stopped for water at the gas station before the Woods Valley turn. Eric R had already made his decision to ride straight back to Escondido. Sheehan was going back the same way as Eric. He was at the gas station but the rest of the guys rolled to Woods Valley. I left late and made a vain attempt to close the gap. I soled past Lake Wohlford and back to Bear Valley Road toward the start of our ride at the mall. I saw Oleg, Larry and Len just getting their bikes onto the car. I saw John M getting into his car too. I waved and pootled my way toward the Lake Hodges bridge and the final 12 miles back home. My Garmin was acting up but my guess is I survived about 85 miles and 5,700 feet of climbing. Hot day of riding.

RB, Del Dios & Three Witches-2 August

https://plus.google.com/photos/117626389252909371681/albums/6178827263765794321

After the Wohlford ride, I was planning to rest or go for a run. Bob P talked me into riding over to the start. Geoff B had sent me an e-mail so I knew he was coming as well. It looked like just the three of us when both Steve Bokowski and Jeff Cresap arrived just after 8 am. The five of us rode over to Del Norte Parkway where we saw Jeff S and Eileen B coming the other direction, resplendent in their matching kits. I think they were riding with a few of the Wolfpack group and it looks like they rode up HVR and into Ramona. We continued on to Lake Drive and looped back out to Del Dios. There was some talk of riding to the coast but we all thought better if it and headed toward the Three Witches climb. Bob P dropped off after getting to Santaluz while the rest of us rode back toward PQ. Tired legs and another fun weekend of riding with 36 miles and 2,400 feet of climbing.

I am sure many of you noticed that Claus checked off Haleakala from his bucket list and joined the elite small club to Descenders who have ridden up this dormant volcano. Claus is on Maui for vacation. What’s a little 110 mile ride and more than 10,000 feet of climbing? Great stuff Claus, still on my bucket list. No time to ride bikes during the week. I hope to see you all for the Saturday group ride.

Death Ride Recap Report

Hi all, just a brief ride report re Death Ride in Markleeville last weekend.

Following an easy drive up with an overnight in Ridgecrest Rick and I pulled into Turtle Rock Park to check in. Some puddles, mud and cloudiness were worrisome but only a few sprinkles of rain were around. Big event, bib numbers went into the 3000’s, lots of people but well run, very efficient and friendly folks. After a little hanging out with some nice Elliptigo friends of Rick, got to hotel in South Tahoe to try and sleep before 3:30am wake time. Cool am, clear skies were welcome and at dawn we were off to Monitor Pass (8314 ft, 10 miles), with hundreds of others. Rick blew by me and most others, fun descent to Hwy 395 and back up and over Monitor. Lots of well run rest stops, Rick drew quite an audience to the Elliptigo and kindly answered questions. More perfect, newly blacktopped roads led to Ebbets Pass (8730 ft), another 10 mile climb, then 6 mile fast descent to turn around and climb the 6 miles back to Ebbets Pass. Long descent off Ebbets then a longish ride with rollers and slight climb, fortunately Dave Voris had warned us about this section, and able to hook on with different riders, Then came Carson Pass (8580 ft), no more fun, 15 miles up, 1 period of respite followed brutal finish on the only rough road, ready to have layer of asphalt applied. NO MORE FUN, looking at the switchbacks, hoping for the end of the climb, no more thanking the nice people cheering us on, where’s that final turn? please… please…ah finally, cars parked, turnaround, DONE. 15 mile descent, rough road at first, unable to stay in drops because neck has had it but descending. 5 miles left at bottom back to start, slow but DONE. Rick did amazing moving time of 9 hours 11 minutes, Me at 9 hours 27 min moving time. Two dinners, visit with Elliptigo friends, good nights sleep, long, easy drive back to San DIego on Sunday. As we all know Rick is an amazing rider and more importantly a really nice guy. Great opportunity, No thanks for next year unless it’s an official Descenders outing. You SHOULD have been there.

Alpine Loop Ride Report

Hi All,

We had a good turn-out of about a dozen riders meet at the start. The pace up SPP was pleasant and at the top we regrouped. Rick W and Larry were behind due to a mechanical so we descended Highway 67, knowing they would catch us soon. Gareth made his cameo and had to return back down SPP.

After a nice descent we turned onto the segment Moreno Southbound and the group hammered. Claus thought it was a neutral section and tried foul. Boyle pulled me back to the group before Larry and Rick W flew by as everyone flew to the stop sign. Larry is the new KOM and there were many PR’s set with a pace approaching 23 mph for the 2.4 mile segment–flying.

The pace did not slow as we rode toward Lakeside, picking up Neil R along the way. It hammered again along Old Highway 80 and we regrouped before heading toward Harbison Canyon. Sheehan and Boyle returned from there while the rest of us floored it down Harbison.

At the turn onto the Dehesa climb, I told Guido to not wait for me. I pooled up the road while the group rolled farther away. I could see them on the turns approaching Tavern but I was pooped when I got to the top. I decided to descend South Grade Road and skip the stop in Alpine.

I rode back toward the 7-11 store at the corner of El Monte. I saw from the fly-by that at least Voris and Larry headed out while other guys went up towards Highway 67. I was in the store enjoying my free slurpie from 7-11, special for the day.

The climb up 67 was painful as usual. Some guys were in front of me and the others trailed behind, never fully closing the gap. I headed down SPP and back home via Black Mountain Road. I got in 73 miles and over 5,900 feet of climbing. Fun ride, tired legs.

Below is the link for a few photos. See you tomorrow for the recovery ride.

Ride Report–HVR & Old Julian

Hi Guys,
Great start to a long weekend. We had more than 20 riders join us on the group ride. I was very late so missed Bob P, Guido, Bryan and Paul at BMR to ride over via 4S to the start. I hustled over and still arrived right at 8 am. Photos are in the link below.

https://plus.google.com/photos/117626389252909371681/albums/6167458136067693281

The first group shot shows about 20 riders. We also had Cresap and Garet who missed the photo as well as a racing buddy of Rick B that met us at the top of HVR. We cruised to the climb and ascended up HVR, regrouping just past the school. Ernst was not feeling well so he left us at the top. Hodges was testing out his Ritchey for his Tour de France rides in a few weeks so he was back behind still coming up HVR when we rolled away. As was Scott Coiner, the recent Poway HS grad who is a strong young rider.

We rode fast to Hwy 67 where Bob P, Garet, Bryan and Paul went right to loop back towards home. The rest of us hit Dye Road to San Vicente and then made our way up Old Julian Hwy. The pace out front with Rick B, Larry, Matt B, Voris and others left me in the dust. We spread out on the climb. Hodges and Scott passed me just short of the top. I turned around right at the top when guys were already coming back down. We rode fast back to Ramona for a break at the gas station.

Guido and I left early for some reason and rode back to 67 alone. We tried to get to the Poway sign at the start of the descent before getting caught. The lead guys got us just as we were coming out of the Mt Woodson Road. I hung onto a few wheels and we cruised to Poway Grade where guy split off. The remaining guys rode to SPP and headed back west. Frankie and Cresap caught up with us along SPP. Guys split again at Pomerado and only Geoff, me and Jim (a new, fast rider) continued onto the climb up Black Mountain Road towards home. 69 miles and over 4,00 feet of climbing, great fun.

Some guys are riding the Scripps Old Pro ride tomorrow. I plan to run Lake Miramar. There is still the group ride set for Sunday. See you out there somewhere. Happy 4th!

Recovery Ride and Ride Report for RSF, Del Dios & HVR Loop

Hi Guys,

Posted below are the few photos I took from the ride today. We had a small group that got smaller as the ride progressed. We started with 8 riders–Ernst, Voris, Larry, Tony, Cresap, John M, Rick W and Rob. We picked up Eric on Camino del Sur as we headed toward RSF.

We flew down Three Witches and cruised along Stud Loop before speeding down Del Dios. We regrouped before the ride to the gas station by I-15 for our water break. Everyone was itching to get going so I bug out towards HVR. I knew my escape was fruitless but it was a fun game while it lasted.

The temps at 10 am were not bad but getting warmer. Larry, Eric, Voris and Rick W went by me about a half mile past the Bandy Canyon turn. Ernst skipped HVR for a family ride later in the day. Cresap and Tony went by me a half mile from the top. I was slowly making my way to the regroup spot near the school.

Just as I was approaching the entrance gate to Eagles Crest, I lost concentration and went just left of the white line and down off the edge of the road, sort of falling into the wall of dirt that lines the road. This is the same wall of dirt I hit coming down HVR with my blown rear wheel last fall. No damage, no foul. I was on the curve of the road and pushed off the wall, turning my handlebars to the left. Unfortunately with no speed and some unknown reason I swung left and then fell on my right side, hitting my hip and elbow. I got up to get out of the road and limped up to where the road widened a bit; blood dripping from my elbow.

My Garmin stopped and then went blank. I wiped off the blood and then pedaled on, even more slowly, to meet the rest of the guys. Eric R was just rolling away on Archie Moore. The rest of us rolled to 67. John M was still climbing up HVR, I think. We separated and I followed Tony to the light where he planned to get water from the fire station and then head back down HVR. I turned onto 67 and chased Cresap up ahead. He kept getting farther and farther away. Larry, Voris and Rick W were long gone. I decided to stop at Mt Woodson Golf Course to get some water. I met Rhonda, a friend of Jeff & Eileen, who was about to climb up the Woodson road. She had ridden from Point Loma, good rider. I limped from my water break, went down Poway Grade and made it along Poway Road, all the way back to my neighborhood.

I have no data from my ride, Garmin is a bust. My right hip and elbow are a bit of a mess. It was a fun ride, about 55 miles or so I would guess.

Below is the information about the Recovery Ride scheduled for tomorrow. It is Father’s Day and my body hurts. I might make it if I get motivated.

Happy Father’s Day to all that fit that moniker.

descenders Descenders Alpine Ride Report

While everyone else was away enjoying the tropical weather on Mt Baldy, a couple of us got together for an Alpine Ride on Saturday. Paul and I met up at Casa Voris where we learned that Dave’s poison oak rash was going to keep him out for another day in the saddle. Get better soon, Dave. And please do not share any pictures of the rash….

We soft-pedaled to the 7-11 on Garden and waited until the appointed departure time of 8am to find that we were the only takers for the local alternative to the Mt Baldy event. So, we rode. Nothing of note until Paul got a flat on 67. Who hasn’t? I have had at least 3. Road debris is Hwy 67’s real charm. We headed into Lakeside where the locals took umbrage to our presence and gave us a few honks and a close pass or two. All in a days ride through the hinterlands of SD county.

The ride down Harbison and up Dehesa was quite pleasant with cool temperatures and relatively pleasant drivers. We stopped at the top of Tavern, refueled and hit the descent. By this time it seemed to have become much cooler – almost to the point of being cold. For me, much preferable to May of last year. We jumped behind a group of cyclists as we passed El Monte and drafted up to Moreno where we proceeded again as a team of two. The locals were much better behaved this time.

Climbing 67 was actually not bad, unlike pretty much every other time I have ascended the grade. Cool weather. A bit of a tailwind. Lots of debris, but a tailwind makes up for a lot. We both hit the green light at the top and descended into a pretty stiff headwind on SP Pwy. No PRs on the descent to be had. After a somewhat spirited pace along SP Pwy, we dropped down to Black Mountain Road and made our way home. A great day on the bike.

You should have come! I really mean it this time.

Tour of California Mount Baldy Ride Report

Hi All,

We had about 17 guys riding the mountains north of Glendora for the 10th annual ToC event, including Bill Wood and three of his Aussie buddies, Frankie Rivas joined us as well as a super strong new rider, Nathan Simpson. Jeff Southerton was also out early and met up with some of us on the mountain.

The weather was a bit iffy but we hoped it would clear up as the ride progressed–it did not. We rode up Glendora Mountain Road and then up Glendora Ridge Road to Baldy Village. Our new plan was to ride straight to the top and then descend back to the village. It was cold and fog rolled over the mountain ridges as we climbed. After the village, it got colder with more fog and then snow on the sides of the hill as we hit the final 3 miles of switchbacks to the top. At the top I put on more clothes before descending back to the village. I had already seen Jeff S, Larry, Nathan, Bob P, Guido and Oleg heading down as I was riding to the top. It was super foggy on the descent and very cold.

The gang regrouped at the corner of Mt Baldy Road and GRR to decide where we should ride next. Oleg seemed to be missing so we all waited for him and tried to guess where he would have gone since he was a bit under the weather. It was still cold and standing around made it even colder. We finally abandoned plans to ride back via GRR and down toward the reservoirs or GMR, everyone just wanted to head down to warmer weather. The descent down Mt Baldy Road was a bit tough due to lots of traffic and the cold temperatures. It finally warmed as we hit Upland, regrouped and rode along the bike path.

The ride back to the start was uneventful. We covered just about 50 miles and almost 7,000 feet of climbing. Oleg was up on GRR with Jeff S, Matt Baab and others so he watched the racers climb back up and then descended down to the start. Hope to go back again soon with the sun shining. Another great Descenders adventure. Here are a few photos.

Skive Ride Report–Walking Wounded

Hi Guys,

We planned a Skive Ride for Tuesday, first one in a month or so for me. I rode over to the start at HVR since I knew the planned riders were recovering from various ailments. Len showed up first, just back riding after surgery on his left hand a few weeks ago. Tony rolled up next, working his way through the ravages of his chemo treatments. Sheehan broke his ribs on the recent bike fall so he was just getting back on the bike. He arrived grimacing as he tried to grip the handlebars with his left hand. All the bumps could be felt in each of his 6 broken ribs. I was the "healthiest" of the lot as my broken wrist (left) and hand (right) from last year are now back in pre-fall condition.

We decided on an easier classic Skive Ride route without Jesmond Dene Road. We rode up HVR, down Bandy, across 78 and hit Milky Way. We rode up Summit and down toward Citrus with a loop back into Escondido to our planned destination: A Delight of France. The guys all rode strong, especially given the injuries and other body damage. Tony pulled more than I expected; he is strong despite a lower hematocrit and increased white cell count. Tony is almost done with his chemo regimen-congrats to him.

There were plenty of almond croissants ready for us to devour. We drank coffee (or tea), ate our delicious snack and chatted. Sheehan was disappointed that I went back over to the dark side of full employment. My easy, carefree days of part-time and consulting roles are over for now. I start at Applied Proteomics next week, moving from my consulting role to a full-time position. This will limit my Skive Rides but I promise to get back out every once in awhile.

After a relaxing break, we looped back home down Bear Valley, past the mall and over the Lake Hodges pedestrian bridge. I headed back to PQ while the other guys turned left along Pomerado. I got in 50 miles and look forward to getting to a future Skive Ride soon. A few photos of the ride are below.

Mussey, Pamo & Old Julian Ride Report

Hi Guys,

Great group route planned by Voris. He recommended we add Old Julian Road after coming back into Ramona from Pamo, nice training for both Mt Baldy next week and preparation for the MC trip in less than a month.

There was already a small group at the Black Mountain meeting spot and we swept up more at Spring Meadow. The final count at the start was 19 riders, including a number of guests–Simon Planken, Keith Sherwood, Phillip and Ran. We headed up SPP and started to spread out a bit, splitting as we rode north on 67. Voris had acquired canine poison ivy that was bothering him, so we abandoned as soon as we started along Hwy 67. A large group hammered down Mussey and then back up before more guys split off the route; Todd C and Jeff L headed down HVR while most of the group rolled to Dye Road. The Warnock sprint got really interesting when the rear wheel of Eric R same loose and we almost had a massive group crash. Fortunately Eric regained control and the moment passed. He had to return to home.

We went straight to Pamo and after climbing back up, we stopped for water at the Chevron. Ernst ditched down 78 and we lost Phillip somewhere along the way too. Tony O & Eric G were heading out to Pamo when we were heading to our water break. I thought with Voris out, the OLH addition would not happen. Geoff and Cresap headed back home while Larry, Simon, Bernie, Hodges, Ran, Keith, John M and I went to Old Julian. I was fading fast and rode up to the top alone. At the last turn, Larry, Bernie & Simon were flying back down. Ran had already turned back to get home and John M was back down behind as well. Hodges and Keith went to the end while I tried to get back to the lead group–no chance. We regrouped at the corner and rolled back toward San Vicente Road.

We rolled along Dye to Hwy 67 where Keith and I headed straight to HVR while the rest of the guys turned left. Keith pulled me to the start of the descent when a young rider flew by us. I hit his wheel and he pulled me all the way to the flats. Love those descents. Keith caught me along West Bernardo Road as we headed to 4S. We climbed Carmel Valley Road and turned at Black Mountain Road. Bernie was coming east along Carmel Valley and saw us as we headed south. Keith finished his final prep for the Durango race next weekend with more than 94 miles. Bernie, Larry and Simon each topped the Century mark. It was a fun ride. I have linked below the photo album.

https://plus.google.com/photos/117626389252909371681/albums/6147356639238082369

This morning I went to Peet’s to get Serena coffee–Mother’s Day. Bernie was there, mid-way through his Sunday ride. He is my hero, I am still trying to recover from the beat down I received yesterday. See you all at Mt Baldy.

Mt. Baldy (ToC Stage 7) Trip, May 16.

Descenders,
Tour of California starts this Sunday. The sprinters will likely dominate
the first 5 stages, but the GC battle will start emerging on ITT Stage 6
(Big Bear) and final GC will be decided next Saturday, May 16, during the
Queen stage 7, up Mount Baldy. This is where Horner won in 2011 (helped by
teammate Leipheimer, they finished 1-2), and where Gesink won in 2012.
Now the race is back 3 years later.

Descenders have ridden up GMR and Mt. Baldy and watched the race back in
2011 and in 2012, riding virtually identical routes. I suggest we stick to
the traditional route up GMR to Baldy, starting from Glendora, with an
optional longer return via Cattle Canyon, East Fork and San Gabriel Canyon
(Rt. 39 – which we did when we climbed to Crystal Lake) – OR you opt for
standard return the way we come (out and back), via GMR. Your choice.

The proposed (longer) route is here: (77.8mi, 10K+ feet).
https://www.strava.com/routes/2301307

I am also attaching a brochure with detailed description (heavily recycled
from 2013, for environmental friendly reasons).

We will meet at Spring Meadow at 7AM and leave at 7:30AM so we can start
riding (from George Manooshian Park) by 9:30AM at the latest. You may also
opt to go directly to Manooshian Park, still let me know so we look for you.

In order to organize carpool, let me know if you plan on coming, if you can
drive and how many (riders+bikes) you car can take.

You should come!

Kitchen Creek, Julian (Wynola) & Engineers Road Loop

Hi All,

We had a great turnout for the group ride last Sat. Voris created an awesome route and we were given perfect weather. There were 19 riders at the start. Some headed down S2 after climbing Kitchen Creek. Some rode to Hwy 79 and then headed back to Descanco. Some rode to Julian, stopped for pie, and then rode back via Engineers Road to Hwy 79. The three "A" Team riders–Voris, Geoff and Larry–added the Wynola 10 mile loop before riding over to Engineers. It was one of the best group rides in quite some time. Thanks for Voris for creating the route and thanks to all the riders who made it epic! I have attached the photos I took.

https://plus.google.com/photos/117626389252909371681/albums/6144834953628943121

Enjoy them and we will put out more info on the group ride for this Sat tomorrow.

descenders Monterey ride report

Hi all,

A week or so ago, Eileen and I took our bikes up to Monterey. Attached is a ride report from the four days riding that we were able to do. Apologies for the size of the document, but I figured a few pictures might be useful since most of us don’t get to ride in that area.

A few weeks before that we spent a long weekend in Agoura Hills riding the canyon roads that criss-cross from Malibu in the Mulholland Drive area. That was another great trip with excellent climbing. I don’t have time to write a report for that now, but if anyone fancies it I’d be happy to share our routes. We stayed at the Agoura Hills Sheraton – nice hotel, not too expensive and with a microbrewery opposite . . . .

Best regards, Jeff

BWR Ride Update

Hi Guys,

While descenderdavid is sharing various Instagram photos during the ride, I thought I would provide a quick update from my perspective. I headed out from my house just after 9 am thinking I might see the BWR riders near Santaluz. I rode to the top of Black Mountain Road and saw a huge group of racers flying along Carmel Valley Road, heading east toward 4S. I hit the corner and latched onto the group.

We passed a large number of women riders as we descended to Dove Canyon Road. I guess a wave of women riders left the start early. I found out the group of guys I was riding with started at 8:20 am. I did not see any Descenders but thought I wold tag along with this group for a bit and then circle back. The pace seemed pretty quick to me as we made our way up through 4S Ranch and then by Rancho Bernardo Community Park. We went over I-15 and turned left onto HVR. I stayed fairly close to the front as we sped toward the climb. I hit the accelerator a bit and found myself near the front as the group spread out along the climb to Bandy Canyon.

We safely descended and flew along Bandy. Off to our left we could see some of the early riders heading back along the dirt single track trail. I think I saw Larry Tanzo leading a large group just before the turn at Ysabel Creek. Our group was now about 20 riders with a few off the front. Somehow I got to the front and pushed the pace to catch the two guys out in front of us just as we got the the turn around.

We took a sharp left hand turn to hit the dirt single track. One of the front guys missed the turn so I found myself in second spot with about 20 riders hammering behind me. Fortunately I did not fall on the packed dirt trail. The rains made the trail nice a firm. The group hauled it back toward Ysabel Creek where I stopped to take photos of the Descenders who I could see were now on Bandy Canyon.

I was able to take a photo of Oleg, Larry, Nate, Ernst, Claus and Mike Hodges. Rick B and Bryan Taylor must have been way out front so I never did see them. The guys looked strong as the made the turn 46 miles into the ride at Ysabel Creek. Just after taking a short video of Hodges as he was asking how far ahead was Clause, I decided it was time to keep riding. I had hung for about 20 miles with the group so decided to head back up Bandy.

I saw Jeff Cresap coming back along Bandy as well. He had climbed to the top of HVR and then back down to Bandy already. We rode up Bandy, down the last mile of HVR and along Pomerado to Poway Road. I headed west for home. I got in 40 miles in very nice weather, perfect BWR riding conditions. The guys are still out there, descenderdavid might be a 5 by now. Here are a few photos.

Alpine Challenge Ride Report

Hi All,

It was not a great day in Japatul! The group riding had high expectations. The weather reports showed the rain gone by Saturday morning. It was going to be a good day in Japatul. Alas, it was not meant to be.

We met over at Spring Meadow and only Guido, Paul P, Voris and me were there for our 6 am rendezvous. It was raining when I left PQ and was raining harder by the time I got to Spring Meadow. I went to Hodges house to give him one last opportunity to pull a double header–ride Alpine today and BWR on Sunday. He was staying deep under his covers!

We drove two cars out to Alpine. The weather started to clear and our optimism climbed a bit. We met Bernie at the start, finished our registration details and five riders rolled by about 7:15 am, all planning on doing the 100 mile loop.

The first 6 miles are a loop down Old Hwy 80 and back around past the start before we rode over to Harbison Canyon. The clouds were thickening and rain started to fall as we descended. Near the bottom Voris had a mechanical issue with his real derailleur. He was done for the day. Fortunately the maintenance van drove up right at this time and took Dave back to the start. Guido climbed back up Harbison and they both called it a day. Bernie, Paul and I ventured forth.

The climb up Dehesa was well paced with the rains falling more. Bernie and Paul stopped at the SAG at the corner of Tavern and I kept rolling along to get some distance ahead. Bernie blew by me about mile 23 and I never saw him again. Paul caught me and we basically rode together up Japatul toward the freeway underpass.

It got colder, wetter and the fog dropped lower. Paul talked about how cold it was at the top of Mt Laguna last year and how the effects of that ride negatively impacted his Achilles heal for many months. He suggested we turn at the SAG before the drop into Pine Valley and loop back. Fortunately for Paul, I am very weak of mind and was easily influenced into the shorter route. It was getting colder and wetter. We stopped long enough to grab some snacks and then hit the loop.

The winds were howling, the rains blustery and we were definitely cold. We made it back to the summit underpass and headed back down Japatul. Paul finally pulled away from me just past the Lyons Road turn and we both rode ever slowing paces back to the start. We only got in 57 miles and just over 4,500 feet of climbing. It was a bit warmer at the finish and we got to chow down a semi-warm pasta lunch with a cold beer. It was still a fun adventure. Look forward to a group ride out to Kitchen Creek soon.

Warrior Award for the day goes to Bernie. He has not posted his ride to Strava so I can only assume he rode to the top of Mt Laguna. It was in the 30’s from reports at the finish line. There was no one that had completed the 100 mile ride by the time we left. Bernie looked super strong as usual so I am sure he rode the full ride. Congrats to Bernie—Warrior for the Day! Below is a link to a few photos.

Good luck to the Descenders crew riding BWR tomorrow. Think I might head out to see if I can spot you out there!
