Descenders Ride Report for Sunday, 22 April

Hi All,

I knew the group of riders able to commit to a morning ride today would be small.  The ride up Wohlford and Cole Grade on Saturday took its toll.  I drove over to meet Gustaf at his hotel.  The goal was to get in a ride before he and his wife had to drive to Palm Springs for the next phase of their CA journey.  It was again very foggy and wet, practically drizzling on my drive over to the hotel in RB.  I was going to retrieve back my bike that I let Gustaf ride after today’s ride so I had to have a way to get two bikes home.  We got organized and pedaled over to Pomerado and RB corner to meet Dave Sheehan.  We were fortunate enough to meet Garet Heintz and his co-worker, Nancy.  Garet recently moved to Poway from Chula Vista and he knows Matt Babb.  Nancy is an ex-road bike racer from Scripps Ranch and she knows Jeff Cresap; small world of roadies.

The group of five headed for HVR.  We hoped to climb up above the thick fog.  Sheehan was in HOGWASH mode all day.  He hammer along HVR until we got the climb.  We regrouped at Bandy and flew down Bandy Canyon.  I was on Sheehan’s wheel going much faster than I should have been.  Dave hammered again along 78 as we started up the Ramona Grade.  Garet and Nancy are very good riders.  They spanked us and got to the top first.  We rode up into bright sunshine in Ramona as the fog stayed thick in the valleys.  We again regrouped and headed through Ramona to Dye Road.  Sheehan organized a fast rotation on the second half of the Dye Road loop back to highway 67.

We took a good pace back along 67 towards Mt Woodson.  Garet and I hit the peak first and he had to head home to met a family deadline.  I took a few photos of the fog hitting the top of the mountain and got on the back wheel of Gustaf as he and Sheehan blew by me, with Nancy just behind.  We hammered to Poway Grade and almost caught Garet.  Nancy kept going to return down SPP.  Sheehan led the way down the Poway Grade and quickly closed the gap of Garet.  We went by him and all of us turned onto Espola.  We let Garet head for home while we regrouped with Gustaf.  The three of us cruised up Espola and then Sheehan again put the hammer down by Poway HS.  We hit almost 30 mph flying all the way back to Valley Verde.  Dave went home while Gustaf and I thankfully took it easy the last few miles back to his hotel.  We rode about 42 miles and climbed 2,800 feet.  Nice end to a good weekend of riding.

It was good to have our latest international guest join the Descenders for a few rides.  Gustaf will return soon and until then, he will follows us on Strava!

Have a great week all.

Ride on-

Descender Ride Report from Bologna Italy by Bob Proulx

2012-04-22_09

Descenders,

Thought I would send in my ride report as well.  A co-worker was able to borrow his nephew's bike for me and took me on a tour of the hills south of Bologna.  Unfortunately, he didn't have an allen wrench to adjust the seat height so I was riding a bike a bit too small – (Guido or Farkas would have been quite happy on the bike – see picture below). Nevertheless, the bike was comfortable and Nicolo was happy because it slowed me down (he has not been riding – you'll see from my Strava post the pace up the hills was not Descender-like as I was trying to be nice and wait for my host).   The roads were small and rural with very few cars but good road surfaces.  Strava shows the ride as having three cat 4 and one cat 3 climb.  Most were in the 6-8% grade with a few sections in the 11-15%.  You guys would have loved it! The weather was partly cloudy but temperature was perfect.  There were quite gusty winds up in the hills, especially once exposed on the south and east side, but that gave us some tailwind on the valleys coming back and we were able to achieve a reasonable pace for some stretches (Nicolo had a hard time holding above 40km/hr.)

All in all, we covered 36 miles and a little over 3,000 ft.  The whole time I kept thinking how much fun it would have been to have the Club together on this ride – it was a perfect Descenders route.  We saw quite a few other riders and from what I saw, the Descenders would have been top dogs.

Sorry you couldn't be with me, but I'd be happy to organize a Club excursion to Bologna in the future.  Nicolo tells me there is an annual event on May 1st covering 100 miles and the 10 hills around Bologna!

Descenders Ride Report for Saturday, 21 April and Ride for Sunday, 22 April

Hi All,

We had a great turnout for the ride today.  It started out fairly foggy in PQ and I was late getting to the meeting spot.  I saw Guido and Geoff just on the other side of the road as they had given up on me and were on their way to Spring Meadow.  We pedaled over and met Oleg and Rick.  The 5 of us headed for the group start.

We had 13 riders, including Gustaf and Manuel.  Manuel is a young buck friend of Matt.  We knew we were in trouble when Manuel said he was "about the same" rider as Matt!  Gustaf is our latest international visitor.  He is in the area for a few days and has been tracking our rides via the web page and our Strava entries.  Gustaf lives just south of Copenhagen, Denmark and is a fan of Arsenal.  Unfortunately Hodges was out of town so they did not get to discuss the beautiful game or Denmark.  Hodges is over galavanting around Barcelona from his Strava postings.

The group consisted of the above guys plus Dan S, Ernst (route planner), Eric, Farkas, Matt and Cresap.  The fog was thinning out a bit as we made our way over the Lake Hodges bridge.  We had a flat and mechanical delay along the bike path but eventually got our ride in gear heading up Mary Lane as the sun broke through.  We stayed as a group until the bottom of Lake Wohlford climb where Matt and Manuel took off, the pace quicken all along the pace line.  Ernst passed Geoff, Dan S and me about halfway up the climb and I hung on his wheel until we got near the top.  After a bathroom break, Farkas reversed course to head home and Dan S went with him.  The rest of us motored towards Valley View Casino.  We took the right and descended towards Rincon Harrah’s Casino.  The roads were bumpy and a bit tight in places, especially has we rode on highway 76 over to Cole Grade.

It was getting warmer now and the climb up Cole Grade was long and tough.  We regrouped at the store at the end of Cole Grade.  The heat took its toll on all of us, especially Gustaf.  There is still snow on the ground at his house.  He needed a coke and some rest.  We are refilled our water bottles.  The group decided to skip Woods Valley Road back towards Lake Wohlford and instead just descend back into Escondido.  I hung back with Gustaf as we lost the group after leaving the store.  We were on the descent when we saw Geoff fixing his flat, all alone on the side of the road.  The three of us picked up a 4th rider, a nice Italian guy who lives in RB.  We rode as a group along Citrus and Bear Valley, retracing our steps back over the Lake Hodges bridge.  Geoff, Gustaf and I went right and back towards the hotel where Gustaf is staying.  Geoff and I finished our ride along Carmel Valley Road on the backside of Black Mountain, legs feeling the pain of the ride.

I got home with about 72 miles of riding and over 5,000 feet of climbing.  Fun group ride.  Here are a few photos.

I am hosting a ride tomorrow if you want to get in an easy Sunday ride.  I will drive to Gustaf’s hotel near RB Road at 8 am.  We will pedal over to Pomerado and RB intersection to meet riders at 8:30.  We will decide a route based on who rides.  I am considering a climb up HVR and over to Poway Grade or heading over to Del Dios and going back through RSF.  If you want to ride–meet at 8:30 am.  E-mail or test me if you have questions.

See you in the am.

Descenders Ride Report for Sunday, 15 April

Hi All,

It was a cool morning but the sun was shining and the roads were dry; a much better environment than on Saturday.  I was late as usual and pedaled over to Spring Meadow to find Voris, Guido and Bob P ready to head to the start.  It was pretty cold in the valleys riding to Voris’ house but we all hoped for warmer weather as the ride unfolded.  I spun down to Hodges house to see his bike at the ready, but no Mike in sight.  Apparently he was at his computer watching a road race taking place in Europe.  We rode to the 7-11 with Hodges playing catch-up.  Rick was there to join us. A small but hardy group for a repeat of the previous day’s ride, Mussey Grade and Pamo Road.

We rode up SPP at a nice pace and around Mt Woodson.  The pace line down to Mussey was quick, as were the nice pulls to the end of the road.  We stopped and enjoyed the bright sunshine and starting to warm conditions.  It was very green from all the recent rain.  Mike noted that it was about 20 degrees warmer compared to his ride the previous day.  We all stayed together for the climb back up Mussey.  Bob P, our world traveler, had to bug out for home and work.  He headed back down highway 67 while the rest of us rode towards Dye Road.

It was deja vu all over again!  I looked around me and saw the original Descenders Team A from the 2008 Shadowtour Team Time Trail–Rick, Voris, Guido and Hodges.  I knew the rest of the ride was going to be painful for me.  We pulled hard along Dye Road and then through downtown Ramona and over to Pamo.  The views going north were brilliant.  We could see the snow on the mountains off in the distance and the lush, green valley ahead.  Voris stopped at the top of the descent to take a photo.  I took a photo of the wildlife down in the valley.  We all wished the road would continue on for miles instead of stopping and turning into a sand/dirt track.  Rick has taken his motorcycle all the way to the end.   No such luck on our road bikes.  We turned around and climbed back out of Pamo Valley reversing our course back to highway 67.

At the light, Voris, Guido and Rick headed home via the SPP descent.  They met up with Jeff Cresap on the way home.  Hodges and I went down HVR.  Mike was a stud, he pulled the entire length of HVR.  We passed a group of Swami riders just before the start of the descent.  Mike led out for the first part of the downhill portion.  I passed him above Bandy and was then passed by one of the Swami guys.  I held his wheel to the bottom of the descent.  There was now another rider behind me and then Mike.  It was a fast downhill for me, nothing like the speedster Sheehan.  At the bottom of HVR, I headed over the I-15 and through 4S Ranch while Mike went down Pomerado.  I finished with 77 miles and about 5,000 ft of climbing.  Great Sunday ride.

See a few photos below:

Also attached is the Alpine Challenge entry form.  Be sure to register this week for the early-bird and team discounts.

The ride this Sat is heading up to north county.  Ernst is tweaking the route so I will send out a message tomorrow.

Descenders Ride for Sunday, 15 April

Eileen and I joined Mike and Geoff for what turned out to be a 67 mile ride interspersed with downpours of rain, sun and wind.  Photo attached (as proof).  In the photo it looks like the sun was shining,  but just two minutes earlier it felt like we were being stabbed by icicles the rain was so hard and cold.  Good for the soul I am reliably informed . . .

Best Jeff.

Subject: Descenders Ride for Sunday, 15 April

Hi Riders,

I am not sure how many brave souls were out braving the elements this morning.  I see from Strava that Mike Hodges and Geoff Barrall went out to Mussey and Pamo.  I see Keith, Matt and others rode elsewhere or later.  I was up in Valley Center at the high school for a track meet early today.  I finally got on my bike about 10 am and rode on Cole Grade towards Lake Wohlford, then east on 78 as I had delusions that I would meet the guys near Pamo after climbing the Ramona Grade.  The wind and rain detoured me up Bandy and down HVR to Pomerado and back to PQ.  Only about 44 miles and no photos; not sure it really happened.

We will have a group ride tomorrow and hope for sunny skies with little wind.  Since most everyone missed the ride today, we will plan the same route.  Sorry Mike and Geoff.

I will ride over to Spring Meadow and be there about 7:30 am.  We start from Poway and Garden Roads intersection at 8 am.  We will head up SPP.

See you in the am-

Rob

Easter Egg Hunt for Old Julian via Ramona Grade

Descenders – We had a great ride up Old Julian today!
When I showed up at Spring Meadow, there was nobody there and I
thought I was going to ride alone to the meet point (would have been a
first), but then Hodges rolled up. Hodges rode part of the Ride Across
California with his kids yesterday, and accumulated more than 100
miles with a lot of climbing in Julian and Ramona just on Friday
alone. At Pomerado Rd. we ran into Jeff Cresap, and then met up with
Matt Babb, Bob Proulx, Rob, Sheehan, Klaus and Bob Raibert. Rob just
drove from Colorado through the night, arriving in San Diego at 4AM.
However, he was full of energy – he was first to the top of HVR,
showing some good form, possibly from elevation training. He seemed so
rested, I demand that he should drug-tested after the ride. We rotated
nicely after Bandy Canyon descent, and for the most part climbed
together as a group, into the headwind, up Ramona Grade. Klaus gets
the “Jens Voigt” award for setting the hard pace on the climb, and
keeping the pace up despite obviously suffering.
Things got a little animated towards the false-flat section of Ramona
Grade, with the three of us (myself, Matt and Bob) separating from the
group a bit, with Proulx and others chasing. Proulx has been traveling
a lot and has been running in UK, France, Italy, Germany and maybe
some other countries that I am forgetting right now, as well as recent
trips to Boston, San Francisco and other locations in US and abroad.
His cycling form was very impressive, given lack of cycling. When we
got to Ramona we broke up – Proulx turned back and descended Ramona
Grade, while Raibert and Sheehan went back through HVR – Bob helped to
pace Sheehan through some sections, with Sheehan setting a new KOM on
HVR descent, 21 seconds ahead of Logan who held KOM before, for an
average of 33.4mph, topping out at 54.5 mph!!! Don’t try this at home,
folks.
Four of us, Matt, Klaus, Hodge and myself, were lead by Jeff and Rob
on what could only be called “Easter Egg Hunt” for new roads leading
to Old Julian, through San Vicente and Vista Ramona Roads. The
“shortcut” wasn’t pre-authorized by the route committee, but being an
excellent salesman, Rob convinced us it will be worth it – fun roads
with fantastic views. There was a lot of “left turn-right turn-left
turn” and we only got semi-lost once (thanks to Jeff who steered us in
the right direction) – not bad for exploring new roads. Rob and Jeff
looped back home when we got to the Old Julian turn, leaving the four
of us to explore Old Julian – this was first time up Old Julian for
Matt and Klaus. We kept the pace steady into the wind, and then
enjoyed a super-fast, tailwind assisted descent down into Ramona. I
was surrounded by high-mileage folks – Hodges did 100+ miles just
yesterday, Klaus routinely does 150 miles of just commuting every
week, never mind weekend rides, and Matt has been averaging 270 miles
a week for the past few weeks – while I was averaging only about 50
per week. By this point it was also quite warm, 86F according to my
Garmin. We refilled our bottles and kept on going to Dye Rd. and HVR –
a lot of kids were out for Easter Egg Hunt, and overall it was a great
day to be out riding. We split up near the top of HVR, with Matt and I
hammering a bit and separating from Klaus and Mike, but we were almost
home. My Garmin battery died on return down Pomerado, but I ended up
with about 80 miles,4500 ft climbed.

Dudley’s Dream Ride Report

Descenders,

We had another epic ride today, as promised.

12 Riders (including two female riders – Denise and Amy) met at Santa Ysabel’s Julian Pie Bakery. On the drive over from Poway we were arguing if the thick fog was going to clear – our weatherman Voris made a bold prediction that it will clear as soon as we get to Santa Ysabel and it did just that!

We rode to Mesa Grande, enjoying the sunny skies and beautiful views. A thick layer of fog was hanging above Lake Henshaw. Rick continued down 76 to the Taco Shop to attempt a first ever sub-1 Hour South Grade Palomar Climb (Taco Shop-to Yield Sign segment) on Strava – more on that later. The rest of us turned right and went up East Grade to Palomar. Traffic was light, we saw a few hunters, but otherwise the road seemed almost abandoned. Ernst attacked to go on a solo breakaway and for a while disappeared from our sights, as the peloton tried to chase him down. Eventually, at a short downhill section, Matt went to the front and set a blistering pace, with the rest of us hanging in his draft, just barely – thanks to Matt’s efforts we rapidly bridged the gap to Ernst who seemed to have sat up, anticipating the catch. We kept climbing, with Keith hurting us by setting a fast pace for most of the East Grade. At the top of Palomar we enjoyed amazing views of low clouds and fog covering the valley as far as the eye could see. We rode all the way to Palomar Observatory (first time for at least three of us!), then turned around and headed to Mother’s Kitchen. When we got to Mother’s, we soon witnessed the arrival of Rick, who seemed a little tired (is Rick ever really tired?) – it turns out he did break 1-hour mark after all, climbing Palomar from Taco Shop to Yield sign in 59 minutes and 51 seconds!!!  (On behalf of all Descenders, I would like to think that we all share the credit for Rick’s amazing performance, as it was really a team effort, somehow – don’t ask me how!)

We headed down South Grade to the 76, along with Rick who didn’t mind climbing it for the second time. We climbed back up as a large group, except the final mile when Keith got a bit animated and blew the group apart – only Rick stayed with him. At the top of the South Grade it got very warm, almost hot. We got some food and went down East Grade, into a very thick and cold fog that moved in over the few hours! Visibility in thick fog was almost non-existent, down to only 30 feet or so up the road, making the descent very tricky and dangerous, at any speeds! Luckily there were no cars passing us. We went up Mesa Grande with unspoken gentlemanly agreement, keeping a nice, steady pace but no attacks.

The disorienting fog around us must have finally gotten to Mike Hodges who got border-line delirious, and for the final 20 miles just kept mumbling non-stop about foot massages (he kept offering money to me and Voris to give him foot massage on the spot, an offer that we both respectfully declined – no offense, Mike!) as well as poetic description of cycling Goddesses riding up and down Palomar. But as long as he kept pedaling, we rolled our eyes, politely nodded in agreement and focused on getting him back to the cars. Rick did some really strong pulls at the front as we finally got back to Santa Ysabel, riding through a bit of a drizzle and what at some point felt like light nanoscopic hail. At Santa Ysabel we got some pies and hot coffee (it was still quite cold outside!), and headed back to Poway, accompanied by continued colorful commentary by Mike Hodges on merits of foot massages, Goddesses on bikes, Etape and Tour of Flanders.

79 miles with 9200 ft climbed (and more than 10,000 ft for Rick!).

An epic ride in a rather strange weather conditions. Strange but very enjoyable and certainly memorable.

Descenders Ride Report for 25 March-Alpine Ride

Hi Guys,

A small group met for the planned ride to Alpine last Sunday.  I pedaled alone over to Voris’ house and found Guido waiting in his car.  We rode on Poway Road towards Garden Road and picked up Rick along the way.  Dave Ernst joined us at the 7-11 store.  I looked around and saw only those four guys and me.  Those of you with a short memory may not remember that these four guys were Team A of the 2009 Stagecoach 100 mile Team Time Trial!  As a perennial Team D member and honorary team captain of Team D, I could tell I was going to be in big trouble for this ride.

We took an easy pace up SPP and I stayed in the back while the old TTT team did a nice pace line down highway 67.  We rode over towards Lakeside and met up with Neal.  Great, another fast rider.  I held on but was hurting.  There was a potty break needed after we crossed under I-8.  I took the opportunity to head out and get a little lead on the boys.  They caught me well before the descent of Dehesa.  Guido was feeling the effects of the hard ride from Oceanside the day before so we decided to head towards Alpine and meet the guys as they climbed back up.  Guido cut through on a new route called East Grade Road.  It was a nice climb up and connected to Tavern Road off the climb.  We descended a bit and stopped for a photo before we saw Voris and Ernst coming up fast on the climb. Guido and I tried to stay ahead of them but they caught us quickly.  Rick and Neal came up fast too.  We all regrouped and headed back down East Grade.

The gang did a water stop at the 7-11 near Lake Jennings.  Guido and I head out early and hustled towards the 67 climb.  Rick caught us first, followed by Voris and Ernst; Neal went back another route.  Voris got a flat so we fixed his tire.  We met up with Cresap who spotted Rick gaining KOM points on the 67 climb.  Cresap rode down 67 to mete us and then climbed back up to the SPP light.  We all headed down SPP and then back to Voris house.  I had 63 miles and 5,500 feet of climbing.

Good day and fun weekend of riding.

Have a great time on Dudley’s Dream Ride.

Rob

Descenders Ride Report for 24 March and ride for 25 March

Hi All,

We had a small group today for the pedal fest up to Oceanside Harbor.  It looked pretty ominous right before the 8 am meet time.  It was super cloudy and spitting light rain.  We all hoped for improved weather during the ride.  The group include the man and wife duo of Keith and Joyce, Hodges, Guido, Bob P, Dan S, Matt and me.  Matt was feeling the effects of his 100 mile ride in the winds from yesterday.  Guido was back after two weeks off the bike.  Bob P was back from his European work adventures and no saddle time.  It was going to be a great ride!

We headed west on the bike path and saw many other large groups of riders as we made it to the coast.  Hodges and Matt pushed down the pedal as we rode along PCH.  We flew nicely through Solana Beach and up towards Neptune Road, just past Swami’s, before heading back to PCH.  Matt steeped on the gas again after Guido put pulled us towards the Carlsbad power plant.  The group hung together on Matt’s wheel.  As we made our way toward the Oceanside Harbor, I saw another opportunity to try to sneak away between some turning traffic.  I pushed hard trying to get to the turn around.  Lots of effort and no hardware as Matt and Hodges easily pulled me in about 100 yards from the end.

We took a short break at the restrooms and made our way back south.  In Carlsbad Village we hooked up with a fast rider on his time trail bike.  Most of the group sped along PCH flying at faster than my legs have been going pace until we hit La Costa.  Guido and Matt continue south with the time trial guy while Hodges, Dan and I waited for Bob, Keith and Joyce to join us.  Keith and Joyce headed south while the four of us headed along La Costa towards RSF.  bob was wiped from no riding and I was tired of chasing Hodges.  We stayed together until the climb up the Three Witches.  Mike pulled me up and then Bob and Dan came up a minute or so later.  Bob spun home while Mike, Dan and I headed for the bike path.

I got home with about 65 mile of riding and just under 3,000 feet of climbing.  A good fast ride for me.

I checked the weather for Lakeside on Sunday.  It will not rain until 1 pm so we have a window of partly cloudy and 55 degrees tomorrow am.  Alpine looking good as well until the afternoon.  I will ride over to Voris house and then head to the meeting spot for an 8 am start.  Hope to see you there.

What: Club Ride
Where: Alpine, CA
When: Mar 25, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Description:
Sunday, March 25: Meet at corner of Poway Rd. and Garden Rd. at 8AM. Alpine Loop, including a ride on El Monte Road to the reservoir and back.

Queen Stage of Tour of California Plans (May 19th, Mt. Baldy road trip)

ATOC Descender Event 5-19-12 Final.pdf
Download this file
Descenders,
First (quick) announcement – since the rain prevented us from doing Alpine ride this past Saturday, we have re-scheduled it for this coming Sunday (in *addition* to planned Saturday Oceanside Ride). The ride is now posted on the descenders.org website.

Main announcement:
On Saturday, May 19th we plan to continue the Descenders tradition of watching the Queen mountain stage of the Tour of California. (This will be 4th year in a row for me, and it's always a lot of fun!).

This year's stage 7 is very similar to last year's route, culminating in mountain-top finish at Mt. Baldy:

Dave Ernst and I planned a ride mapped out here:

http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/76051464

Also, please Read The (F) Brochure, attached as PDF.

We will plan to leave Saturday in the morning (meet at 7:00AM, on the road by 7:30AM), and start riding at 9:30AM. The proposed route is very similar to our last year's route, planned masterfully by David Voris, and it's impossible to get lost. At the top of the GMR climb (GMR and GRR intersection – the only intersection, really) we will have an optional out-and-back add-on, 4.5 miles descent down into Cattle Canyon (to East Fork road) and then back up to the top again. Just like last year. We will then proceed towards Mt. Baldy village where we will have lunch and watch the race go by, around 1PM. We will then climb to the top of Mt. Baldy (not everyone has to go all the way to the top), watch the finish and ride back to the cars. On the way back we will descend into Cattle Canyon and ride on East Fork and around San Gabriel Reservoir – this return part is new to us.

Actionable Item:
If you plan to participate in the May 19th ride please RSVP back to me, as soon as possible, indicating Yes/No/Maybe. Also indicate if you are willing to drive, and the capacity of your car (how many bikes & riders). Drivers will be reimbursed directly by the passengers at the going IRS rate of 55 cents a mile, which for 4-passenger car and 240 mile round trip works out to $33 per passenger (thanks to Guido for doing the math for me!).

You should come,
Oleg.

Descenders Ride Report-Lake Wohlford and Couser Canyon

So_grade_snow_3-10-12

Rob:

Nice report. So proud to hear all of the rallying around a fallen Descender after such an awful crash in a fairly remote area. Way to go all.

My ride was vastly different but to make it official photo attached. Ironically I Rick and I crossed paths near Lake Wolford (he was with 2 Ranchos) and I thought it was odd to see him sans any other Descenders and at that time of day (around 12:30). Now I know why. See you next week and have a good week to all.

Descenders Ride Report-Lake Wohlford and Couser Canyon

Hi Guys,

It was a perfect day to be riding; sunny and warming with low winds.  We had a large group of 15 riders in what should have been an epic ride.  It started well but on the descent of Couser things went awry; more on that later in the report.  We all met at the mall and headed for the Lake Wohlford climb.  Eric and Lisa were there; although Lisa made just a cameo appearance.  They are training for the Flying Pig marathon in Cincinnati so Lisa went off on her own for an easy ride since today was a hard run day.  Eric rode with us.  Jeff S brought along a new rider and friend of his from Pfizer.  Eileen is a super strong rider and we hope she can join us again soon.

The group was mostly together for the start of the Lake Wohlford climb and we regrouped at the lake.  The pace to Woods Valley was brisk and we again regrouped before the sprint.  Cresap, Sheehan, Guido and I took to the point early but then the real horses came through at 33 mph.  We were flying in a large group towards Valley Center, it was a sprint finish that either Keith, Matt or Bernie won; I was too far back to see for sure.  We started to lose our group at this point.  Farkas and Bob R headed left back towards Escondido while the rest of the group went towards Lilac.  We kept up a nice pace and at the West Lilac turn Eric and Sheehan bugged out while the majority of the group went towards Couser.

The climb up Couser Canyon is not long but it will burn the legs at bit, especially given the early 20+ miles of the ride.  Bernie flew by me early in the climb and hit the top first.  We regrouped and readied for the smooth and curvy descent of Couser.  Things started well and I was near the back watching the group snake along the curves.  As I cruised around a tight left turn, I spotted Bernie in the road picking up his bike.  The torn jersey and bibs caused me to hit the brakes hard to stop.  Guys were well down the hill stopping and turning back around.  I got to Bernie first as he mumbled about a flat tire and he started to take off his front wheel.  His left shoulder was a mess, as were his left elbow, fingers and left leg.  It brought back a flash of memories from my Banner Grade fall only he looked much worse.  I took the bike away from Bernie and more guys came to help.  There was lots of blood dropping off the bike and wheel, Bernie was in bad shape.  We were out in the middle of no where trying to quickly assess Bernie, his bike and our options.  Bernie was super strong and dealt with the obvious pain like a real trooper.  We lost Jeff C and Dan S as they were too far ahead on the descent to understand the extent of our problems.

The group moved down the road 30 yards, off the curve to a side road and started to fix the bike and Bernie.  Rick brought out a latex glove and provided a bit of needed levity by asking Bernie to bend over.  Bernie used a dollar bill from his pocket to stop the bleeding fingers and then pulled on the latex gloves for more protection.  We changed the tire while Bernie tried to call a cab.  Cell service was spotty and no cab service could find us.  Plan B was to try to fix the bike and Bernie enough to coast down to Highway 76.  We knew he busted up his shoulder and hoped he could ride down the hill safely.  My first tire fix failed so we had to stop to replace the tube again.  Jeff S and I rode ahead to call a cab, we had no luck either.  The group, with Bernie, finally made it down to the intersection of Couser and 76 with Bernie reaching his wife for a needed rescue ride to the emergency care facility.  Rick stayed with Bernie while the remaining riders headed west towards Old 395.

There were only 6 of us left–Guido, Matt, Keith, Jeff S, Eileen and me.  The terrible turn of events took away from the beauty of the ride but we had almost 25 miles in front of us to get back to the start.  The winds picked up a bit and the trudge up and down Old 395 is not our favorite route.  I am in search of return route alternatives to our Lake Wohlford, Couser, Rice Canyon future climbs.  The route committee is on point to find a more scenic route home.  We stopped at the camp ground for needed water and rode up towards Jesmond Dene Road.  This road is a nice shaded descent that we took fairly quickly.  Jeff S and Eileen were headed back to Stone Brewery so we all rode down Broadway into Escondido.  They turned off at Washington while the last 4 of us headed back to the mall.  Cresap and Dan S took a circuitous route back and we caught up with them at the cars.  We rode 54 miles with 4,000 feet of climbing.

It should have been an epic ride; it was definitely a memorable ride.  Bernie has communicated that the diagnosis is a “mid-shaft clavicle displaced fracture” with treatment of a sling and traction.  He did not mention his elbow, fingers or legs; all were severely injured.  We hope he heals quickly and is back on the bike soon.

Here are a few photos.

Ride safe-
Rob

Oleg’s Bay Area Ride Report: Mt. Tam and Other Greatest Hits of Marin County

Today I rode Mt. Tam (Tamalpais) from Mill Valley. First I got a bit lost in redwoods near Mill Valley trying to find Panoramic Highway, but instead discovered an awesome narrow, twisty-turny residential road surrounded with redwoods that was rolling up and down and eventually brought me back to Mill Valley. I eventually found the right path to Panoramic and was soon climbing into the fog and by the time I reached the summit of Mt. Tam I was completely surrounded by the fog – I could barely make out San Francisco and Golden Gate bridge in the distance. I descended all the way to Stinson beach and then followed Shoreline Highway to Muir Beach to Tamalpais Valley and Marin City. On Google Streets the Shoreline Highway looked like a busy road with no shoulder, but that road was totally amazing. I also really enjoyed the descent to the Stinson beach, fantastic road!
I rode to Golden Gate – the bike side of the bridge is still closed and it was a total zoo trying to dodge tourists. After a short loop around Presidio Park I crossed Golden Gate again and went up Headlands. At the top of the climb I realized I need to head back to Mill Valley. I stopped in Mill Valley to have a burger and a shake (at Super Duper Burger). It must have been 3,000 calories, at least! I then had a bit of a scare as I frantically ride around Mill Valley trying to figure out where I parked my car – everything looked very different during the day as opposed to early morning. I found it eventually but I will from now on make a habit of remembering where I start my ride from and how to get back. 67 miles with 6,700 ft climbed.
Photos below.

Oleg’s Berkeley, CA ride: Tunnel, Skyline, Pinehurst Loop, Grizzly Peak

I brought my Ritchey Breakaway travel bike on a trip to Berkeley, CA. (My savings in luggage airline fees alone over the past 6 months are now exceeding $1,000.)
I started the ride right after 6AM, just before the sunset with the larger than usual moon still out.
After a few miles of solo riding I hooked up with another rider, Joseph from Germany, a scientist working at Berkeley Lab. He took me up to Tunnel Rd. climb to Skyline and then on a wonderful loop, called “Pinehurst Loop”, through the winding roads deep in the redwoods forests and back to Grizzly Peak Road that circles the Berkeley lab at the top of the hill. Apparently this is a classic ride for Berkeley based riders, very popular on Strava. 13 strava riders rode Tunnel climb that morning alone, before 8AM!
Fantastic panoramic views of Bay Bridge and Golden Gate bridge, as well as San Francisco downtown. No fog. Highly recommended if you are visiting East Bay/Berkeley area.
Tomorrow I plan to ride Mt. Tam before flight back home.

Descenders Ride Report for Sat, Mar. 3-Mussey Grade and Pamo Road

Hi Guys,

We had a great group ride last Sat.  The large group of 15 riders met at the 7-11 store on Poway and Garden Roads.  We had some new faces and returning regulars.  We also had our international teammate, Bill Wood, who was back in country from Melbourne.  The day was warm and sunny, a great way to start a Descenders ride.  The group took a mellow pace up SPP and we stayed together along 67 to the top of Mt Woodson.  The pace quickened a bit as we pulled toward Mussey Grade.  The two Matt’s–Babb and Davis-kept up a brutal pull.  The large group dove into the curvy roads down Mussey Grade with most all the guys taking turns at the front.  We flew to the finish to enjoy the spectacular view overlooking the reservoir.  I turned around to start the ride back up while most of the guys took in the views.  I thought I would have a nice easy climb with the head start but within the first mile the “peleton” blew by me.  I grabbed the last wheel and hid in the back while the guys pedaled hard up the climb.

Folks had to split at the top of Mussey.  Bob R and Dan S went back down 67.  Sheehan, Bob P and I went down HVR.  The other 10 riders headed along Dye Road on their way to Pamo.  Keith James was out riding with his wife, Joyce, when the gang sped down Pamo.  I heard the bomb down was again exciting.  The Strava entries had all the guys over 60-65 miles for the day.  Sheehan was determined to take advantage of the slight Santa Ana wind and recapture the KOM on the HVR descent.  Bob and I took a more conservative descent and we regrouped down by Lake Hodges.  Sheehan just missed taking back the KOM crown; probably due to the big pulls down Mussey Grade earlier.  He headed for home while Bob P and I sent back through 4S Ranch.  I finished with 55 miles and 4,000 feet of climbing.  Here are a few photos.

On Sunday, Cresap and I explored San Diego Country Estates off of San Vincente Road.  We just took a right turn off of Dye Road and went back into the neighborhoods.  We found the route that connects you to Old Julian Hwy, some great climbing.  I will propose to the new route committee to go to Old Julian Road via this route soon.  We could venture to the end of Ramona Oaks Road to add more mileage before heading up toward Old Julian–lots of possibilities.  The winds were up a bit and Jeff did most of the pulling into the wind.  The route back down Poway Grade was pretty quick with the tailwind.  I got home with 59 miles and 4,400 feet of climbing–good weekend in the saddle!

I have not yet learned to blog like Oleg.  I will try to post this report to our team blog.

Ride on-

Rob

Oleg’s Boston Snow Ride Report

Boston Snow Ride

East coast had very mild winter this year – until now. December, January and February were more like March, with no snow and temperatures in upper 40ies.

The winter has finally arrived in Boston! – First few days of March have been more like December or January. There was no way to ride on the road today, since Boston area has had about 5 inches of snowfall yesterday (at least in Northwestern suburbs of Boston). So I decided to take my brother’s hardtail MTB for a 2-hour spin – including some bike paths and forest trails. With fresh snow, it was difficult to turn over pedals, going as slow as 7-8 mph on flat trails, at fairly hard effort, judging by my heart rate and heavy breathing!

Paved bike path was a lot faster (since there was a lot less snow there). I stopped for a coffee and pastries in Lexington Peet’s and headed back, with some trail exploration on the way. The front derailleur got frozen with packed snow that turned into ice and stopped working in the final 5 miles. Icicles formed on all exposed surfaces, including cables, brakes, bottom bracket area – the small ring was completely covered in packed snow/ice. It’s a wonder the drive train was still semi-functioning at all. After application of a few gallons of warm water and the bike is finally “defrosted”. Tomorrow will be warm (upper 40ies) so most of the snow is going to disappear by Sunday.

Oleg’s Ride Report from Boston: Revolutionary War Battlefields (before snowstorm)

A winter ride through NorthWest neighbourhoods of Boston – Billerica, Bedford, Burlington, Lexington, Arlington, Somerville, Cambridge and back. A lot of it on Minuteman bike path and Routes 4/2A/Mass Ave., through historical parts of revolutionary war.

The snow was forecasted at noon, and it started snowing pretty hard right as I was finishing my ride – most of the roads were still pretty dry for majority of the ride, though, so I timed it just right.
I am in town on business and I left my Ritchey Breakaway at home this time – instead I borrowed my brother’s old steel, (and rusty!) 7-speed Bianchi with ancient drivetrain and downtube shifters, deep handlebar drops – I felt super old-school, and a bit uncomfortable at times. A few hours later we have a few inches of snow on the ground, it looks like MTB ride time tomorrow.

2012 Monster Climb Trip, June 22-24 2012 – Kernville, CA

Monster Climb 6 – Kernville 2012.pdf
Download this file
Follow Descenders,

Dave Voris has put together another great route for this year’s Monster Climb trip.  Please see attached trip brochure.  The trip is scheduled for June 22-24 and will take us to new and exciting terrain, with rides planned in the San Gabriel Mountains and western side of the Eastern Sierras near Kernville.   Our base will be the quaint town of Kernville, where we will be staying at the charming Kernville Inn along the river.

The trip is planned for 16 riders at a cost of $330 per person.  Cost is slightly higher than previous trips due to a continental breakfast the Club will be providing on Saturday and Sunday mornings, since the Inn does not have a breakfast facility.

Trip cost includes transportation, hotel and a basic continental breakfast provided by the Club, dinner both Friday and Saturday nights, as well other supplies such as first aid, water, home brewed beer and ice for coolers.  If actual trip costs are different than the fee a small true‐up after the trip will be performed.

Active 2012 Club members can sign-up by replying directly to me.  Trip payments will be due by May 15th.  In the event of rider cancelation, all costs we can recover will be refunded.

Similar to previous trips, we will car pool in personal vehicles.  When reserving a spot, please advise if you are interested in volunteering to drive and how many riders/bikes your car can carry.  Each driver will be reimbursed based on the Gov’t mileage rate.

As we get closer to the trip a detailed trip itinerary will be provided.

Looking forward to another amazing trip!

Regards,

Dave G.

Descenders Ride on Sat, 25 Feb

Thanks Oleg for the good summary.

We actually had 14 riders.  Oleg is a physicist so 13 or 14..close enough.  I took a few photos at the start and in Santaluz but managed to drop the batteries from the busted up camera; it really is dead now.  I will start shopping for a new one.

The group split when we got to Stud Loop in RSF.  Bob R and Sheehan headed home with their short leashes in hand via Del Dios and around Lake Hodges.  They had family responsibilities.

Cresap and I got blown off the back on the climb towards San Elijo.  We regrouped with Bob P as the rest of you studs headed up to Double Peak.  The three of us did reverse Elfin Forest and down Del Dios Highway around Lake Hodges.  The views of the lake were spectacular.  We trudged up the three witches and Bob headed for home.  Cresap and I headed back on the bike path.  Only 54 miles for me with 4,000 of climbing.  Good to be out on the bike.

Here are the last of the photos from the busted camera.
